“Stunning Views, Great Location, 2 Minutes from the Sunset Spot”
Reviewed 13 September 2013

We stumbled upon Old Oia houses while we were trying to find a good location in Oia, And everything about it was perfect, the location, the price the location. Old Oia houses are actually individual houses complete with a Kitchen and very well furnished, you have your own armchairs, your own Umbrella in your porch and the view is simply breathtaking, trying to find the Blue dome churches ? there is one right next to it. The Castle of Oia from where perfect Sunset of Oia is seen. There are all the good restaurants near walking distance.
The help and service given by Jill, vasili and Anna was great. The bread they give in morning is really fresh and good, Oia has a totally different feel during early hours in morning and after sunset when it becomes much more quieter and thence its a different feeling to wander through the streets and enjoy the scenery and the buildings, the Ammoudi bay steps are also nearby which makes the location perfect

My wife and I have stayed here 3 times. We have done so because the view is fantastic and the price is super reasonable. If you want a luxury hotel with great service, don't stay here. Be prepared to fend for yourself but again, for the view and price, in my opinion it cannot be beat.

Room Tip: All the rooms face the Caldera and have fantastic views. The more you pay, the bigger the room and...

Okay bits:
The location was good. It's right on the cliff side with Caldera View, with a small balcony. It's located at the bottom of the main street. It's 3 minutes walk to the bus station to Fira and 5 minutes walk to the famous hill to watch sunset. The studio room we stayed in also comes with a small kitchen, so we could cook breakfast ourselves.

The price was okay, considering how expensive most hotels are in August. We paid 105 euros per night for a studio including breakfast. However, the breakfast is very basic, actually the worst breakfast we have ever had in Europe. A loaf of bread was left outside your room each morning, and sometimes a carton of juice (yes we didn't get juice everyday, although it's said on their web site fresh juice every day). The room set up was very basic though. There is no toiletries in the bathroom (even a bathing soap/ gel). Also the lady cleaned the room every other day, not every day.

Disappointing bits:
There is no interaction with the B&B owner as to advise of what to do etc. As for us, stayed in a B&B means get some local advise and some interaction with the local people, so we were quite disappointed with that. The owner also runs a restaurant called Lotza (at the bottom of the main street), which they spend all their time in. On arrival, we went to the restaurant to find the owner and we were given a key to the room and that is it. No welcome, advise about what to do or where to go, or any personal touch. We asked for a map and they haven't got any. And every time you need something, you need to go to their restaurant to find them.

Also we ate at the owner's restaurant on the first night when we arrived. From Day 2, we managed to find quite a few great restaurant in Oia with similar price, but with much better food and cosy atmosphere, especially Restaurant Roka in a back lane behind the main street, and Restaurant Floga, with more decent food but slightly more expensive.

During the week we were on the island, there was a power and water cut-off, due to an accident with the main generator. So there was no water or electricity for 2 days and then on and off for another 2 days, which was really troublesome to stay on the island in August. The owner haven't checked with us even once on how we were getting on or whether they could help in a way to help with our stay. The room was completely dark in the night and we had to go to the owner's restaurant to ask for candles. They spent all their time trying to make their restaurant running with no power, and completely didn't care about their guests having problem in the B&B. All we were given was to pay 30 euro less in the end.

So if you are coming to Oia hoping to stay somewhere with a personal touch, this would not be the place. There was absolutely no service or any warm feeling here.

Offering stunning views as well as a nice traditional setting with an amazing balcony overlooking the caldera, where you could stay forever.. At the same time the price was affordable for its position. Prices can get very crazy in Oia in peak season and its hard to find anything reasonable.

Stayed in House 1, which was just perfect for my fiancee and I. The balcony view of the caldera is unrivaled with any lodging I've ever used, and there's also a rooftop terrace which, at least in August, had the sunset view. It's a place that is pretty much self-catered. One tip: if you're coming from the airport, definitely use the transfer service they offer, and confirm that the room will be ready by the time you arrive. Drawbacks are an inconsistent wifi signal that's only accessible in the front of the house and a TV that wasn't working at that point, but I argue you don't go to Santorini to use any of that. You go there for the views, and the ones at Old Oia Houses are ones that will make all your friends green with envy.

Wow! Stunning, uninterrupted view of the caldera. The envy of every tourist who walked by looking for that "perfect picture". ( This on occasion meant us having to remind cheeky, enthusiastic photographers that the balcony was private....but a strategically placed plant pot in front of the gate was usually enough to deter) A screen is provided to provide privacy from the narrow cobbled street - which gets very busy around sunset with the thousands of tourists who visit Oia for this amazing sight.
First thing and at the end of the evening - it is fun to sit and watch the donkeys pass by, with their tinkling bells and their owner calling out "sorry, taxi, sorry lady taxi"to warn people using the path to move out of their way!!!!
The room was perfect for our needs. Small, but well equipped, clean and daily serviced by the lovely Anna who also brought us fresh bread every morning...delicious!
We stayed in Oia for ten days, so hired a car to explore Santorini,s villages and beaches....would recommend doing this. As most of the beaches are stoney, would recommend buying some swim shoes to make entering the sea a little easier! Most beaches have great tavernas and hire sunbeds and umbrellas.
Also hired a boat for the day which was great fun. Enabled us to visit the volcano and other islands under our own steam.
We felt we were in the heart of Oia and experienced a truly magnificent holiday!

A dream holiday that didn't come cheap, even though we booked through EasyJet rather than booking direct as we usually do.
We booked our holiday based on the photos supplied on Easyjets website; a beautiful white hotel
overlooking the caldera view. We knew Oia was expensive & accepted that for 2000 pounds for 6 nights we would have to go without a pool, something we checked with EasyJet as the photo had shown a pool but the description hadn't included.
Our transfer rep didn't have the hotels telephone number & the driver didn't know the hotel & we were subsequently dropped off at the tourist information office, where unfortunately they didn't even know where Oia Houses were. Thanks to a description by a previous review on trip advisor we were able to find the hotel after 3 hours. There was no sign for the hotel.
It turns out all the photos were of the Carnaves Oia Hotel. Oias Houses was on the other side of the road at the back of Carnaves Oias Hotels car park. Not only was it not the caldera view but it was a quick knock up, unfinished hotel that was nothing like the photos!
The Carnaves Oias Hotel had the key for our hotel, carried our bags to our hotel & calling direct from our phone went direct to the Carnaves Oias Hotel reception. When we asked to pay for an upgrade we we informed that Oias Houses was another business & to pay 400 euros a night or go elsewhere.
We went elsewhere from the 2nd night onwards, which meant we effectively paid for 2 hotels for a weeks holiday.
This was a dream holiday, & whilst we appreciated we were not paying top rates, we certainly expected more than being in the back of another hotels car park & looking in the opposite direction to the view the photos show, photos of which were used to sell this sub standard accommodation. If you pay budget, you expect budget but we hadn't, we had paid medium price & more expensive than the fabulous hotel we found across the road the next day that delivered what we were expecting.
Don't book the Oia Houses hotel, if you do then be prepared to be disappointed, talk about over promise & under deliver!
