Aethrio is a nice hotel located in Oia, Santorini. The hotel location is fantastic, right in the middle of the village. From an overall perspective I liked the hotel, specially the swimming pool that is sunny and an excelent opportunity to freshen up when Santorini starts burning in the afternoon.

The room was large and simple. I would classify it as good, but given the price I believe there is space for improvement (particularly, the bathroom facilities). One detail that was a bit disappointing was the almost inexistant wireless network - none in the room and weak in the reception.

The breakfast was very good and the staff very friendly and heplful.

Great location right in the middle of town but you would never know that as it is so quiet, we had a superior room with 2 balconies overlooking the pool and the ocean, well furnished and spotlessly clean - as good as many a 4 star hotel that we have stayed in for a fraction of the price. Breakfast which is included in the price was adequate, staff were friendly and polite and ready to help if any was required, we will be back.

Room Tip: Room 12, 2 balconies with views, 2 rooms have views of the caldera but not sure of numbers

Would come again and recommend it to anyone. Perfect Location, watch the sunset and the caldera from your own terrace or sunroof. No long stairways, two steps away from main road. Spacious rooms. Beautiful Hotel, Friendly Staff. Breakfast could be better, shower could be larger.

Room Tip: We asked for a room with caldera views. got one next to the church. Amazing! worth the little extra...

We spent 4 nights at Aethrio on the fringe of the high season for Oia. The location is undeniably one of the best on the island, right in the centre of Oia providing easy access to the famous sunsets by foot within 5-10 minutes and countless restaurants, shops and supermarkets . We really enjoyed the location and the look of Aethrio but would fear coming in the high season.

We were disappointed when we arrived at the port and we were expecting a transfer to the hotel as per the email chain in the prior days. In the end we used a taxi and negotiated 25 Euros to the hotel. While checking in the Aethrio staff member advised us they didn’t book the transfer company as it was an election in Greece the day prior to our arrival, therefore they didn’t work in the afternoon (not really a good enough attitude to customer service from my perspective, but what can you do). It was quite a disappointing start to an otherwise enjoyable stay in Santorini. This is why we have rated this hotel average.

(+) Positives
+ Location in the heart of Oia, our favourite village of Santorini
+ The hotel is very picturesque and has a courtyard in the centre with a pool as the feature
+ The room was generous in size and good value booked on hotels.com
+ Breakfast provided enough variety to start the day
+ Room had a mini-fridge, air conditioner and supplies in the bathroom including soaps, shampoo and bath gels
+ As the hotel does not have roads around it, there is no noise from the countless quads, scooters, motorbikes, cars, buses, etc that would effect other hotels that are not as protected as Oia hotels

(-) Negatives
- The whole transfer experience upon arrival to Santorini. For two or more people I would recommend using a taxi as it is the same price and much more efficient and comfortable. If you want to do a transfer contact Pagonis Travel direct to ensure you have a booking.
- The internet is only available in the reception area and is quite slow. Every night there were guests outside the reception (tables & chairs are there) using this service
- The TV was only small and had only 8 channels. BBC (the only English channel) was intermittent and unavailable for extended periods.

Overall we had an enjoyable stay at the Aethrio and we will return in the future when visiting Santorini. If you are luxury or exceptional views or service, you will need to spend more money and chose another hotel.

STAFF:
-- Very knowledgeable & patient, don't add surcharge to tours, have good recommendations.
-- Like other Greek service providers we met, they were initially gruff & taciturn but warmed up over time & were all smiles and friendliness by end of stay.
-- They have many guidebooks available for perusal at reception.
-- Available only from 830am to 830pm. They have an emergency number, but would have been nice to have someone available at least by phone for at least a few hours longer.

LOCATION:
-- Ideal: in the prettiest town on the island, and yet a bit removed from the most hectic parts of Oia. Very quiet.
-- Don't miss the terrific ouzaria "Roka" a few steps away. You'll be told reservations aren't necessary, but don't take the chance. We saw them turn people away.

BREAKFAST:
-- Included in price of stay. Not gourmet, but decent array (eggs, breads, nutella, jams, melon, tomato, "cold cuts", cereal, coffee, good juice...), and plentiful/constantly attended to. The yogurt is of course a standout.

FACILITIES:
-- EXTERIOR charming and attractive; cobbled and whitewashed, fitting right in with Oia's general aesthetic.
-- Simple but adequate furniture.
Room exactly as described, other than being much larger than expected.
-- Kept CLEAN; daily maid service while we had breakfast.
-- WIFI in reception room only. Would be great if they expanded to the guest rooms (or even to the patio or breakfast room adjoining reception), but that may be technically difficult or impossible; even the most basic types of cell signals were faint to nonexistent in the room.
-- BATHROOM: pretty, with high-end fixtures. In nice shape other than shower curtain which was getting a little grotty at the bottom. Nice shampoo/conditioner and shower gel.
-- TOWELS: per our experience elsewhere in Greece, stingy: few, and not replaced during the stay. Fine with me for eco/enviro purposes, but FYI.
-- POOL: beautiful, kept impeccable.
-- OTHER:
-- the exterior LIGHT bulb over our door was out, but replaced partway through our stay without our asking.
-- Like our experience at other Greek hotels, the in-house PHONE didn't work.
-- Sunset terrace was handy. Do note that there are buildings that would likely interfere with the view in (I'm guessing) July/August.

GETTING AROUND: not strictly about the hotel, but to share a tip: you absolutely don't need to rent a car, atv, etc. (Certainly true at this location, a 2 minute walk to the Oia bus terminal.) We found the bus system punctual (contrary to reputation), frequent, cheap, fast, & easy to use. They'll change up to a €20 bill without complaint, which was atypical of our Greek experience.

MOSQUITOES: my research, & staff, said no mosquitoes in October. Not true. Bring or buy protection. Hotel will provide free plug-in repellents upon request, which appeared to work.

Room Tip: Some rooms require additional stairs.

Great hotel set in the back streets away form the maddening crowds of Oia. Has its own sunset terrace and a great chilled out vibe. Rooms are large and simple (don't expect anything too fancy). Staff were helpful and the whole vibe around the pool and breakfast area is lovely.

Loved it...will go back!
