“Majestic views”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 April 2013

We stayed at the Scirocco for 3 nights during our visit to Santorini. Upon our arrival at the airport, Anja the owner picked us up in her minivan and dropped us off as close as she could get to the apartments. One of the Scirocco workers was on hand to greet us and he carried our 2 large suitcases and showed us to the apartment (about a 10 minute walk from where we were dropped off).

We had booked the studio room which had a balcony with views of the caldera. The room itself was comfortable enough with all the standard amenities that you would need. The room wasn't very spacious but it was sufficient for the two of us. The WiFi signal wasn't particularly stable in the room but it worked perfectly fine out on the balcony.

The staff were all very helpful and attentive and they even provided us a map of the Fira and recommended a couple of local restaurants (Nikolas Taverna which is near the main square is a must try!) On the day of our departure Anja's daughter picked us up from the previous drop of spot and took us to the airport for our flight out.

All in all we had a very pleasant and comfortable stay and with a view like that you can't go wrong! :)

Definately recommend this place if Santorini is one of your places to visit. Anja, the owner is very friendly. She picked us up from the airport and gave us a little tour on the way to Fira. The rooms are very clean and nice. I enjoyed sitting at the balcony in the evenings watching the sunset. Remember to travel light if you are visiting Santorini as climbing the steps can be a killer :)

The rooms came with breakfast and although it was simple, just dining on the balcony with the amazing view just completed the whole thing. Will definitely stay here again if i visit Santorini.

Our stay at Scirocco was wonderful! The rates are reasonable (100 Euros a night when we were there) and the rooms pretty big. We had our own patio where we watched the sunset. The only ting a little odd is that it was right next to another room, so if they are out at the same time, not much privacy, but the neighbor was friendly at least. They have beatiful views of the caldera and the white buildlings along the mountainside. There is a pool as well. No meals were included, but it did include an airport transfer, which was perfect. Staff was friendly to provide us with little things like when we forgot a bottle opener. So easy to walk to other restaurants, shops and the main part of the town. (maybe like a 5-10 minute walk)

We decided to spend 8 nights in Fira mid Oct.2012 to experience the charm of Santorini and the Caldera view and we were not disappointed. We chose this location on the recommendation of a friend who previously stayed here. We booked our room directly dealing with Anja(owner) via e-mail. Her description of the room and location was accurate and helpful. We stayed in unit 9 a studio apartment. The room is layed out in a traditional Greek style. We found it clean and comfortable. The only part of the room I would not consider traditional was a bar fridge but was greatly appreciated. We chose this location for the Caldera view and considered it a great value. Upon our arrival Anja,s daughter picked us up at the airport. She was prompt and pleasant. Upon arriving at the rim of the volcano and parking we were met by Edie who carried our luggage and escorted us to the Scirocco. Be prepared for 10 min, walk through numerous walkways a series of steps to reception. We stayed in unit 9 another 86 steep steps from reception to the unit. I would not consider this a negative but you should be prepared for the physical part of the adventure and it is not for everybody. We dealt mainly with Alma and Arthur. They were most helpful and very friendly. We left with the feeling they both went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable. Breakfast was included with our room. We found it excellent. Be prepared it is a European style breakfast. Choice of coffee or tea, orange juice, yogurt, a delicious home made fig preserve, boiled egg, cream cheese, bread, jam and honey. Having this breakfast served on an open balcony was part of the experience with a beautiful Caldera View always there. We never met Anja until the last day because she was out of country. She picked us up and took us to the airport. A very pleasant person and we enjoyed her company. Many thanks to everyone at the Scirocco for making our holiday special.

We booked this hotel on the recommendation of friends who had used it previously. We were picked up at the airport by the owner. After trecking down some narrow streets wondering what was in store we were confronted with a view that travel magazines crave. Then the hotel matched the setting. We had use of the Cave room which was decorated in local style and had an ambience that invited one to stay forever. Santorini lived up to its reputation and we enjoyed only 4 nights... Too short a time! Great hotel!

Stayed in this hotel early October 2012. The whole 2 night stay is okay until we checked out. We will be having a day trip to the volcano in the morning until the afternoon and watch the sunset in Fira before retiring the day. We checked out early and asked the counter if it's okay to leave our baggages. They said it's okay and did let us know to take it at 7pm. There was also an option for us to leave our bags in the tour agency's office but we decided it's safer in the hotel.

After watching the sunset, my wife and I went back to the hotel, checking the time 15minutes before 7pm (we are on time) and along the way discussing how great the island is when suddenly we heard a shout - "HEY FASTER! I WANT TO GO HOME!!!". It was a guy (not the lady we talked to in the morning) that also manned the reception. We were stunned on this kind of attitude, really put our vacation on a bad mood. We were 50meters away from the reception (guess how loud his voice) and hurriedly took our bags. This guy followed us behind with the intention of making us leave the reception immediately. So we went out of the gate and found a bench near the church and arranged and repacked our bags. I feel really humiliated especially some guests from other hotels looking at us, on the pathway, arranging our things.

This hotel just cared on their guests, until you checked out. Stay away from them, there are loads of other good hotels nearby.

My expectations were high for Scirocco since my review actually begins with my initial emailing back and forth with Anja (the wife/owner) before making my reservation. Her email responses were timely and thorough, which if you’ve done your own lodging research, you know is a rarity. She sent me the details of the room she had available for us (Room #8, with a balcony and a terrace, a small refrigerator, an electric tea kettle but no stove, tv, or microwave), photos of the room and the view from the room, and she warned me about all the stairs. What I found when arriving was a 100% accurate description!! It was such a relief to know that the photos that she sent us of our room looked exactly like what we found when we arrived. An added bonus, there was a European outlet converter in the room for us to use as well!

My mom and I spent 5 days/nights at Scirocco and absolutely loved it! The cleanliness, attentiveness and response time was a top priority for the employees and owners of the apartments. Anja and Lefteris (the husband/owner) were extremely friendly and their staff were always prepared with answers to questions, suggestions for restaurants, car rental assistance, found out what movie was showing at the open air theater, if the tour to the volcano was worth it or not, etc.

Now about the room and the stay:
Room #8 is the one with the stone terrace, directly above the pool. The positive thing is that you have a quick 10 steps down to get into the pool. The bad news is that you have 87 stairs JUST to reach the reception at the top of the hotel/stairs. There are another 85 or so steps to reach the main shopping strip and the main walking area in Fira. You must consider your physical ability when staying at Scirocco, or anywhere on the cliff with a caldera view in Fira because of the stairs and heat in the summer. It is certainly is a painful haul when you’re lugging bottled water to your room, and your loaded beach bag with food, water and reading material for the day. For those considering where to say on the island, if stairs are a problem, stay in Oia, or somewhere else with few to no stairs.

Back to the room: #8 is a large studio which means there’s two twin beds pushed together that sleeps two people, and there was a couch that is easily another twin bed to sleep a third person. The room had a terrace, which while private in the sense that we didn’t share it with another room, it is the last room before the pool, so as people were walking down to the pool, they passed your terrace along the way, which they can clearly look into. Same goes for when we walked up the stairs each day – those with terraces along the stairs were visible to those making the climb. In addition to the terrace though, we had a private balcony, so we sat out there more often than the terrace. Either way though, you can still see people all around you, even onto other hotel balconies because of the position of the balconies all along the caldera.

In the room, we had plenty of walking about space, a small vanity/kitchen counter and a kitchen table with 3 chairs. There were also two large bowls/plates, utensils, glasses and mugs for us to use, which were replaced every day. There was a large built-in cabinet/closet to hang items, and plenty of hangers as well as extra blankets and a variety of reading materials in English and German. The bathroom was small but not tiny, and it had a window that was not see-through glass (some of the rooms’ bathroom windows abut the stairs as your walking down to the pool, and people can EASILY see into a few of them; that is not the case with room #8.)

Scirocco offers a free ride (from Anja or Lefteris) to and from the airport (which we gratefully accepted upon departure); however, they do not offer this service from the port. We arrived via ferry, and Anja was quite kind to arrange a private pick up service for us, and the gentleman was waiting at the port with my name on a board as we got in at 1:30AM from another island. The only hiccup there was that Anja had quoted me one price via email weeks prior to my trip, and this gentleman asked me for another amount. I told him that wasn’t the price Anja had quoted me, and he said that I could straighten it out with Anja and not worry about paying him, which is what I did. It was a simple mix-up, but luckily I was not left on the hook for it as Anja took care of it and I paid my quoted price to Anja upon departure from the hotel. Speaking of paying upon departure, as other reviewers have noted, this is a cash only hotel.

We did not have breakfast at the hotel because it was not included in the price of the room (as others have said it was included in theirs) and that was fine by us. We would just pick up some food for the morning the evening before from the local bakery, and we were fine.

All in all, a really lovely experience with great, friendly service. I would definitely stay there again, just likely request a room nearer to reception at the top of Scirocco next time!

Room Tip: Some rooms share terraces/balconies, make sure to ask if you want as much privacy as possible. Also...
