“Liked the Scirocco”
Reviewed 23 October 2008

We just got back from two weeks in Greece and Turkey . We stayed 3 nights at the Scirocco and we enjoyed our experience.

The owner was very nice and picked us up and dropped us off at the airport for no extra charge. The location is perfect - right on the cliff side overlooking the caldera. The room was in a typical cyclades style - not fancy but quite charming. The balcony was great, and what a view!

If you're tall you won't like the beds too much, since it had a wooden frame with posts at each end. I'm 6'2'' and don't like my feet hitting anything so we ended up sleeping across the 2 twin beds. Unorthodox but it worked!

The breakfast were pretty weak. Coffee, juice, bread, a bit of plain yoghurt, a bit of cheese spread, jam and honey. Not worth the 5 extra euros each. After one time, we just went to the grocery store and bought some cold cuts, sliced cheese, a loaf of bread, orange juice, and instant coffee which we enjoyed a lot more. Luckily the room had a fridge and hot plate with some pots, plates and utensils.

Despite the above I still give it 4 stars as it was a good value for about $120 Canadian a night. The location can't be beat in Fira.

If you want a nice place without luxury or pampering this is a great place to stay - although next time I would stay in Oia instead of Fira since its so beautiful.

The hotel is easy to find because of the good instructions they give on their website and the numerous sites. There are indeed many steps so do pack lightly!

The owner and family all are very friendly. The room has a caldera view but the balcony, while not shared, is outside the room for about half of the rooms with private balcony. The bathroom (with a sink) and the shower are at opposite ends of the room so it was a little strange but otherwise the room is clean and reasonably nice. The bed is on the hard side.

The breakfasts (separate charge) are only adequate, especially compared with others we had in Greece (either outside the hotels or included in the room rates). They use tap water for tea. While I am aware that the tap water is safe to drink, the rick minerals make the tea salty. However, it was very very nice to have the view at the same time we take in our breakfasts.

The pool is small but again, when you consider the backdrop--the Mediterranean--it felt good. All in all, it is great to be part of the scenery--staying in the white walled houses along the cliff.

Right in the centre of Thira above where all the boats come in. A fantastic view and room 8 is directly above their swimming pool.
It is run by an incedibly nice German lady called Anja. The room was large with it's own terrace and private balcony overlooking the Caldera. There's a few steps to climb, but thats Thira! Anja gives great advice on where best to eat to avoid (strangely) the tourists.

Stayed in August -high season -with family ranging from 12 year old to 84 year old, everyone loved this hotel. The views are incredible, and our cave room was huge and clean. Large private balcony overlooking the caldera with table, chairs and sun lounges. Everything in Santorini is expensive, as was the hotel, but worth every euro. The owner even drove us to the airport at 5am for our 6:30 am flight. It is a steep walk to the hotel, but there is a less steep, less direct path that takes a few minutes longer that was fine for our 84 year old traveller. Keep in mind that Santorini is not a place for anyone having difficulty walking up and down stairs. Located close to the archaeological museum and bus station.

Stayed at Scirocco apartments for 3 nights. We had 3 rooms between our party all on the same level so we had a big communal balcony to share between us with stunning views. The rooms were also fantastic, all quite large and the bathrooms were nice and clean and functional. We also had cooking facilities which was very handy. The hotel is in a fantastic spot, not far to walk to the town where theres heaps of shops and a supermarket. The pool was great too, never packed and the views were just stunning. The staff were always very helpful and very friendly. Would highly recommend!

We (a group of 4) stayed here the last week of May 2008, which was a nice time to go because it wasn't too hot yet and not too many people. We stayed in a smaller room that had a double bed and our own cozy, private balcony. The other couple stayed in one of those "cave" rooms, which could have easily fit 6 people, but did not have their private balcony. Instead, it was right outside our door. These are like mini apartments with a small kitchenette that had very basic items like fridge, stove, some pots, dishes, and utensils. No microwave though. You might have to buy a sponge and detergent if the previous tenants didn't leave any behind.

The owner of the hotel was very responsive via email. We were even able to arrange for her to come pick us up from the airport! As she drove us back to the hotel, she gave us a little tour of the area, pointing out banks, stores, etc. We were immediately impressed with the personal service. Once we got there, Arturo helped us carry our luggage. Keep in mind that there are tons of steps in Santorini, so pack light if you can. The other thing to note is that the Scirocco doesn't accept credit cards. However, with the numerous ATMs, paying in cash wasn't a problem.

The closet space was very small. Bring your own shampoo - only soap is provided. The room was an okay size, but because we had that extra area leading out to our balcony, it wasn't too bad and we were able to store our suitcases there. It was sufficient for us. Our friends who had the cave room had a LOT of room and we ended up hanging out in their room.

Although people say Oia is nicer and more romantic, we actually prefer Fira/Thira. It's very quiet during the day time (especially around the siestas). Occasionally, the nights would be a bit loud, but who'd want to go to bed at such a beautiful place?

Scirocco was in a great location! We enjoyed our daily sunset views from our balcony. The supermarket and town center were a short walk away, as well as many restaurants and stores. We would definitely stay here again and highly recommend it to everyone!

We absolutely loved the Scirocco and would recommend it to anyone that can handle steps. If you can't handle steps, you probably don't want to be in Santorini at all. Anja picked us up at the airport and gave us a small driving tour of the area and town. She dropped us off and we were met by Arturo. He graciously offered to carry my luggage and I didn't understand the extend of his offer until we reached the Scirocco. This area of Fira is not accessible by car so you have to walk. Walking includes cobble stone streets and many steps. Arturo, you are my hero!
The hotel has beautiful views of the caldera that you can enjoy on generously sized balconies. Our room had a small kichenette which was also nice for keeping a few groceries on hand. The location is below the center of town so it's close to everything but still quiet. Everything was clean and very pleasant. Thank Anja and Arturo for your hospitality.

  • Liked — We loved relaxing on the balcony with our freshly bought desserts and spectacular view of the caldera.
  • Disliked — The steps were exhausting after a long day but that's every where in Santorini.
