“Good hotel for short stays, not for a week or more.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 October 2011

The hotel looks good, is very clean, and the staff pleasant, but it is geared up for conferences, and 2 to 3 nights stays. There was an international medical conference while we were there and the delegates dominated by shear numbers. The restaurant was closed to everyone else one evening for them. We ate at the restaurant once and it was fine. Fira town is within easy walking distance, and the views over the volcano impressive.
We took a taxi from the hotel to Old Fira which worked out cheaper than taking the locaL bus and then the shuttle from Kamari. Old Fira is amazing we spent over 3 hours there, truely not to be missed. the Museum in Fira is well worth a visit, well set out and objects, clearly labelled. We took a boat over to the volcano, our guide was Maggie a jolly Belgian lady who is very well informed and made the trip worthwhile. We took the local bus to Oia and enjoyed the views, if you want a drink/meal there if you go out of the centre a short way you can still get the views but its much cheaper. In Fira we ate at Nikolas's a few times, you might have to wait a little but its excellent, don't miss the lemon pie! We also ate at Camille, also very good. For a snack you really can't beat the local 'Giros'.
Would we go back to the Hotel and the island? probably not you can see everything in a week, and the Hotel was good but impersonal.

Room Tip: Some are near the road which can be quite busy, also, you don't want one near the restaurant.

Location - 10 minutes level walk to Fira town (WOW). Across road from caldera vistas.
Property set out so that each room is quite private with own little 'patio', and the pools are fantastic, and the bar service was from a young lady who deserves "employee of the vacation", always with a smile & asking about our day. The room was tired and in need of a revamp (especially the bathroom). No welcome at check in (it all seemed such a painful process for those working at reception). Internet not always reliable, and reception didn't really care. Breakfast was ordinary. Information was sparse and usually delivered with a grunt. Insufficient number of sun beds/loungers around the pool areas.
Ate out in town all nights.Explored Oia (bus 1.60euro each way) for a day. Fabulous & unforgettable Sunset Caldera Dinner Cruise on the "Aphroditi" for 55 euro p.p. (booked through local Tempo representative...takes in caldera, hot springs swim, climb volcano, view sunset). FIRA Shopping (fabulous artisans, great well-priced shopping). FIRA cafes, bars & restaurants. Franco's Bar (for the sunset experience with Maria Callas), Tabasco (for best Gyros in town) and a host of others.
Hotel best for location, refreshing pools and sleeping after wearing yourself out during the day discovering all the beautiful and wonderful things Santorini has to offer.

El Greco was the perfect hotel for us for our three nights in Santorini. My husband and I fell in love with it the minute we arrived. With its white buildings, cool blue pools and beautiful flowers, it "felt" like Greece to me! The lobby area was charming and staff were friendly and helpful, and our room (#204) was large, clean and comfortable and the the bathroom included toiletries. The hotel complex is well laid out in three separate areas, each with its own pool so it never felt loud or crowded. In the middle section (the largest) there is a pool bar area where you can order lunch, and also a buffet breakfast from 8:00-10:00 a.m. that was included in our Transat Holidays package.

The hotel is very conveniently located just a short walk to a grocery store (TIP: buy a 6-pack of water for only 1.35 euros to keep in your room fridge as the tap water is not recommended for drinking) and Fira, which is filled with all kinds of restaurants and shops. There are so many good restaurants close by so on our first night we walked five minutes down the road to "Mama's House" for dinner, which I'd highly recommend for good, reasonably priced food. We even met Mama and she was a hoot! As well, our Transat rep recommended the "Argo" restaurant for a breathtaking sunset view and made a reservation for us and it did not disappoint! (Re: dining in Greece, bread is not provided free of charge. They will automatically bring it to you, sometimes with olives, but you'll notice that you pay a euro or so per person for "bread/table service".)

A very short distance further is the bus depot so you can easily walk from El Greco to catch a bus to Oia (1.60 euros each way) - and you MUST go to Oia to see the famous white buildings with the blue domes that we all envision when we think of Greece. I was just sorry that I didn't have any doggie biscuits packed in my purse because there were several friendly strays in Oia that followed us around! (TIP: get up early and walk in the dark from the hotel to the bus depot to catch the first bus to Oia at 6:45 a.m. You'll enjoy seeing the sunrise on your drive and experience Oia without any crowds. Very serene and peaceful and you will be able to take amazing postcard-like photos without tourists in your shots, and then have breakfast on a patio and take in the spectacular view.)

Although we spent most of our time out and about exploring Santorini, it was always nice to return to this lovely hotel. I would certainly recommend El Greco and would stay there again if I ever go back to Santorini.

We stayed in four hotels in the Cycladies in the course of an island hopping holiday and would rate this hotel as the least appealing of all. The ground floor room was dinghy and tired. The walk into Thira was along a busy road and, as there had been heavy rain, a large puddle had formed on the road in front of the hotel, requiring us to time our arrival to avoid getting soaked by passing cars. The view of the volcano over the defunct opencast pumice mine was anything but memorable.

When we arrived in Thira, we found difficulty in locating the hotel, because it is outside the town. We rang the hotel for help and waited for half an hour before a hotel bus came to collect us and drive the remaining 200 metres.

Breakfast was not unlike a busy supermarket cafe and the quality of what was served was poor. We were put off the muesli by a dead fly in a portion that we had taken. The greek yoghurt, so much a feature of breakfast in other hotels, was barely recognisable. There was also no supervision of the buffet table and as a result much of the food was handled and either taken or tossed back, despite the availability of tongs.

This review may be out of keeping with others of this hotel but we visited much better hotels, which were marginally cheaper but enormously better as Greek Island experiences.

We arrived at the El Greco Resort in Fira and were impressed with ease of check-in. Room was very nice, the bathtub had an "improvised" shower in the middle of the narrow part of the tub, making it almost impossible to shower comfortably. The bathroom was dated, but clean. The rest of the room was nice and housekeeping was excellent. The grounds were stunning, pools crystal clear, the buidlings sparking white and landscaping was beautiful. There was a problem with the free WiFi in the lobby and they kept trying to sell us internet cards in lieu of the "free" WiFi! Finally they got it fixed after two days. The breakfast buffet was excellent, the selection of food was bountiful. The thing that was most irksome was the unfriendliness of the eastern European staff. They never smiled or interacted with guests, if they did, it was minimal. They seemed more intent on speaking their own language and interacting with each other. This left us completely cold. The Resort is located on the main road to Fira, so those rooms near the front of the property likely had a lot of road noise. Across the street was a wonderful view of the caldera. We would definitely stay here again, but just not expect any warmth from the staff.

Room Tip: Make sure your room is in the rear of the property AWAY from the main road. Make sure your bshower h...

M new husband and I made this our honeymoon hotel as we were married in Fira on 9th September 2011. We went for the half-board option and were pleasantly surprised by the choices on offer (having read a few half-hearted reviews before we went?) The hotel itself is very spacious, airy and the reception staff very friendly. Our room was opposite the poolbar and although the music played until midnight, it did not bother us in the slightest. The room was fantastic - kingsize bed, very comfy mattress, air conditioning and lovely bath/shower room. The dressing table/mirror came in very handy when my makeup/hair lady came to get me ready for the wedding! Breakfasts were vast , evening meals were plentiful and very varied (despite this being rated by others as boring????) Being a buffet arrangement, I had hoped to sample various smaller portions to taste all the delights but, alas, we did not manage to go for "seconds" due to being very satisfied with what we had!! We didn't use the pools but they looked very inviting and were cleaned (and even painted) regularly. They were never crowded although all the beds around them were either being used or "kept" with towels on!! We were out most of the day, every day, with a walk into Fira only 10 mins. Fira itself is a bustling town with many pretty features but you just have to take a bus out to Oia - to me this really is the most picturesque village of all the greek islands we have been to.... sheer bliss! We took about 200 pictures here alone! We ate every night but one at El Greco's restaurant. After we were married we went back to our room to change and went into Fira to "Mamma's House" as we had read reviews on it before we left home. What a welcome! Mamma even gave us a complimentary bottle of wine and raised a glass to us, the newlyweds! The food was delicious, but if I am honest, it wasn't any better than back at the hotel. The cleaners are worth their weight in gold. Every day they are in emptying bins, making/changing the bed, cleaning the floors etc We were so impressed by our cleaner, although she did not speak english, that we gave her our table flower arrangement from our wedding. We tried to explain that it was to thank her and she was so delighted, she cried! I would definately go back to El Greco, maybe for an anniversary... It was expensive compared to other hotels we have stayed in but for our purpose this time (honeymoon) it was money well spent and we got what we paid for!

Room Tip: Rooms by the poolbar are good if you like to people watch. If you like peace and quite to read etc t...

We have just returned from a week at the el greco.

The hotel is lovely with bright open spaces all over, lovely pool areas and our room was great.
the hotel was exceptionally clean at all times.

Breakfast and food in general was Ok, considering how much the hotel cost it should have been better in quality, presentation and display.

The pool bar was nice and the staff very attentive (particularly Nadia)
