Most hotels don't look like the pictures; this one does. The El Greco is lovely and in an ideal place for exploring Fira and Santorini. The rooms are clean, airy, spacious and well maintained by the cleaners. The pool areas are nice and relaxed (though some guests leave their towels on the sun loungers all day despite not being anywhere to be seen for hours at a time- my advice, if they've been gone a while just move them and take the lounger for yourself) and the pool bar is the place to go for ice cold beers and magnificent cocktails from Pedros, Barman of Champions. This man, single-handedly, is reason enough to visit the El Greco.

The walk into Fira takes about 5 minutes (crossing the road in front of the hotel can be a bit hairy with the quad bikes tearing past!) and the first thing you hit is the Carrefour supermarket which is a good place to stock up your fridge. Beyond that lies central Fira and the Caldera which, quite simply, is spectacular and should be on everyone's list- though it's worth saving up before you get there.

The rest of the island offers more laidback options at the beach resorts of Perissa and Kamari which can be reached by bus for a couple of Euros. Further north, Oia is Fira but quieter and offers an arguably even more spectacular sunset, before giving you time to head back to the El Greco and round off the night with another of Pedros' beautiful cocktails.

We arrived at this hotel full of excitement as the lobby and pool areas (4 of them) looked sensational as we walked in with many rooms overlooking them. Unfortunately our's was not one of them being situated at the furthest point away from the pools. Whilst this was disappointing it was just one of those things. We then went down to a buffet dinner which quite frankly was the worst meal we have had in 6 weeks of travelling in Europe. It was luke warm, insipid and totally unappetising - a couple of other guests who were on a tour with us described it as "slop" which was about right. We tried the free wifi which is advertised as being available in all rooms only to find that there was no signal whatsoever in our room (it was too far away). We therefore sat by the pool at 10pm where we could get a signal (though it repeatedly dropped out - more on that later) and were flabbergasted to witness guests coming out of their rooms and reserving the sun beds and umbrellas for the next morning - something I have never witnessed before in 40 years of traveling. I awoke early,6am, and went to the pool to check emails and there was not a single bed available. I mentioned this to the tour rep who spoke to management who's response was for us to take them off!!!! An abdication of responsibility if ever I heard one.

Breakfast was extensive with a continental or cooked breakfast however the latter was often cold even at 8 am when the restaurant opened. Whilst there was a fridge in our room, no tea/coffee facilities were available which made it difficult when breakfast was not served until 8am.

On the positive side, the location is excellent being 10 mins walk from the attractions of Fira; the rooms were a good size (although the absence of a towel rail was just silly). The staff were very friendly and the pool area wonderful and relaxing (if you could get a bed). Additionally the free wifi was a real benefit but there were really only 2 places on the large complex that had a good consistent signal - the lobby and a small lounge area overlooking one of the pools - otherwise there was either no signal or a very weak and unstable one which frequently dropped out.

Unfortunately what initially appeared to be a wonderful 4 star hotel turned out to be something significantly inferior.

We stayed at the El Greco hotel on the 26th June 2012 for 1 week and what a superb stay it was.
We booked through Thomas Cook and the moment we arrived we just fell in love with the place.
The hotel has a sort of resort feel to it as it is spread over 3 levels and is kept immaculate.
We stayed in room 516 and what a beautiful large room it was, lovely comfy bed, good air con, nice size bathroom, plenty of storage space, large full length mirror, it was just perfect! Breakfast is served from 8am – 10am with a large variety to choose from, plus the coffee was really nice too, we had lunch twice at the hotel and found the food reasonably priced with a nice selection.
The hotel is perfectly located with fabulous views from across the road and the walk up to the town is only about 10 minutes away where you will find the most amazing shops, restaurants and bars. We got married while we were in Santorini and when we came back to our room the hotel staff had left us a fruit basket and a bottle of wine which we thought was very kind of them.
The little touches at this hotel made our stay just simply amazing, from the members of staff that carried our luggage to our room, friendly bar staff, helpful reception staff making dinner reservations for us and booking taxis for us. (Please note only 39 taxis on the island).
I did hours and hours of research when choosing which hotel to book and I believe that the El Greco ticks all the boxes for a fabulous stay at Santorini.
We fell in love with Santorini and we won’t hesitate in booking the El Greco for our return trip!
Book it, you will not be disappointed!

My family and several others stayed at the hotel for two weeks whilst we held our wedding on the Island. The staff were excellent, the drinks and food service was brilliant and on our wedding day when a car did not show the staff came to the rescue and conveyed our guests to the venue.

We had an amazing stay at El Greco and would recomend this hotel to anyone visiting Santorini!

My wife and I stayed here for 3 nights and thoroughly enjoyed it. The service was great, the breakfast filling and the scenery just beautiful. When we arrived at 2:30am the lit pools looked like beautiful moonlit lagoons. Nice and quiet and just a 5 minute walk from Fira. Would definitely stay here again!

This is a very good and comfortable hotel, worthy of a 4 star rating. The staff are very nice and always ready to help. The rooms are really spacious and spread out in several villas throughout the hotel, with several pools to choose from, a nice view and a very good poolside bar. Our room was somewhat far from the reception (which was nice because it was very quiet), but some of the other rooms look like they might be noisy at times.

Breakfast is ok, but could be better. Not a lot to choose from, but what they do serve is good enough. The reduced serving time (8-10am, rather than the usual 7-10:30) means it's a bit crowded.

It's located just outside of Fira town (literally a 5 minute walk), which is good because there's no way it could be this spacious and quiet inside Fira town.

Room Tip: Avoid the ones too close to the main swimming pools, where people tend to get a bit noisy (pool hour...

We booked this with Thompson and had an amazing time. We booked for B&B only so can't comment on the evening meals but breakfast was plentiful. Breakfast is served until 10am but it does get rather busy from about 9am - it's a little bit chaotic!! Nothing to worry about though. The hotel is quite large and is classed as a "resort" but it doesn't feel large by any means. It is built over three levels and each "level" has it's own pool so feels smaller than it is. There is a bar by one of the pools which serves great food until 5pm. You must try the cocktails!! The service throughout the hotel is friendly and professional. The hotel is about 10 minutes stroll into Fira which we quite liked - away from the hustle and busy but near enough to walk into daily/nightly. It is also about 5 mins from the supermarket and the bus/taxi stations. It's a great base from which to explore Fira and the island. It's about a 25 min bus ride to Oia. We did the Simply Santorini excursion with Thompson because we wanted to visit Oia. I would really recommend that you just get the local bus for 1.60 euros. It was so easy - clean, new buses with ac - which run every 20 mins or so. I wish we'd stayed for longer and I would have been hopping on the buses all the time to visit other parts of the island. All in all, I would definitely recommend the hotel - great for lazy days around the pool and easy to walk into Fira for the many shops, restaurants and of course the sunset views! I will definitely be going back!
