Archontiko Apartments (AA) comprises only 3 apartments on the cliff rim just outside the main tourist area of Santorini. The location is great not only because it provides a wonderful view but it is also quiet. Yet it is only 10 minutes walk to all the activity.
Finding AA is no easy task. The company’s website simply says ‘Fira’, which is not very helpful. The streets/pathways do not have name signs (or very few) or numbers so even a street address is not much assistance. Google ‘maps’ provides some guidance. I emailed AA’s website for directions but received no reply, which was disappointing. Finally, after arriving at the bus station and then roaming Fira’s streets for some time (having left my wife and bags at the bus station) and asking a number of shopkeepers, I eventually found it. To perhaps assist others, the easiest way to locate it is to find your way to the front of the Catholic Cathedral –it’s a landmark so anyone can show you the way. In front of the Cathedral (i.e. looking out over the caldera) are stairs leading down the cliff face. Keep going until you reach the bottom of the stairs then turn right. There, about 5 metres along on your right hand side, is the entrance to AA (opposite Hotel Keti). To find the Cathedral from the bus station walk straight up the hill outside the bus station entrance and keep going. Easy!
The apartment my wife and I stayed in for 3 nights was very clean, modern, and nicely decorated. It was split level, with the bedroom upstairs in a small semi-circular room with an air conditioner. The stairs leading up to the bedroom were quite steep and narrow and thus the accommodation may not be suitable for some people, especially as the toilet is downstairs. Also downstairs was the living area which included air conditioning, a couch, a large square-shaped coffee table, two wooden chairs, an electric jug and a small refrigerator. Adjacent to the living area was a clean, modern, good sized bathroom with basic toiletries supplied.
The apartment also came with a safe and complimentary wifi.
A simple but adequate breakfast was available for a modest cost of 5 euros per person – boiled egg, toast, slices of ham with processed cheddar cheese slices (yuk!), croissant with chocolate sauce, piece of plain cake, jam, tea or coffee. Unfortunately it was the same each day and a bit of variety would have been welcomed (such as a greek salad one day instead of the croissant, cake and the 'plastic' cheese).
But overall we were very happy with our stay. I thought the accommodation was fairly priced given its features and therefore very worthy of a rating of 5. I strongly recommend you consider AA.
