“Spectacular views warrant the three stars”
Reviewed 29 July 2013

Pros: The view is AMAZING and the pool area is very nice. We also greatly enjoyed the breakfast, which the staff will gladly deliver to your room so you can eat on the patio.

Cons: The staff can be a bit rude at times, especially the young boy at the front desk who works during the day. Also, there are so many stairs so this place would not be friendly for those who are not completely physically capable of climbing a lot of steep and uneven stairs. Our room was small, the bathroom door didn't shut and the lock was broken on the front door so anyone could access our room. Finally, there was no internet in the rooms and was only available in front of the lobby.

This place is nice enough for the view and pool, but for the price we paid (about $350 per night in high season), the amenities were severely lacking.

After booking many months ahead and having our booking reconfirmed by the hotel a few weeks before our arrival date we were very disappointed that the night before our arrival the manager emailed us to say the hotel had been overbooked!

Lena proposed that we move to another hotel on the more remote side of the island for two days and be transferred to Thira for the last two days of our stay. Fortunately the Notos Therme and Spa turned out to be lovely however its location was very remote and as we did not have a car and had not budgeted to hire one, we were a long way from the action.

On the day we were to transfer to Athina we were told they would send a car whenever we were ready however having wanted to leave after breakfast, we were then told the transfer would only be available at 11.45am and after waiting till 11.30 we were then told it would only be available at 12.30! At this point we said we would like a car immediately. Twenty minutes later a young girl in a Seat hatch back arrived to transport three adults, three large suitcases and three backpacks! Something had clearly been lost in translation and we had a very squashed and dangerous drive up the hill with our driver hardly able to see out of either the back or passenger windows.

Roland cheerfully helped us with our bags on arrival in Thira and Lena showed us to room 1. The room was small and a bit tired looking but the location and views made up for that. The terrace breakfast was very pleasant although I'd agree with other reviewers that the Internet access was sub-standard. We requested towels for the pool and they took quite a while to arrive meaning three of us shared a towel for a couple of hours.

After this experience and what others have said about the regular overbooking, we would have to seriously reconsider whether or not to book Athina Suites again. There are lots of other great properties on Santorini - check reviews before booking!

I booked this hotel through expedia and following confirmation I contacted the hotel direct to re-confirm. I have to say right from the beginning, the manageress Lena was exceptional. She dealt with all questions quickly and patiently.

We had planned this holiday for last year as an add on to our honeymoon, however we had to cancel our plans. I arranged a surprise for my wife and let Lena know and she took care of everything.

A couple of days before we traveled, Lena contacted me and advised that our first night was over booked (This is Santorini...it happens a lot). She was very apologetic and organised a one night stay at the Petit Palace before arranging to upgrade us to a suite on our arrival. Although inconvenient, it was not the end of the world, and as I say, Lena took good care of everything.

Following our transfer to Athina, Roland (built like an OX) carried our bags the distance to the hotel and down the numerous steps. Roland was fantastic throughout our stay as were the cleaners.

When we arrived at the Athina, our first impression was WOW. The view is just immense. Check in was easy and Lena should us to room 5. It was lovely and big with a separate bedroom and bathroom and sitting area. The had a large balcony with furniture which allowed us to take in that fantastic view.

The hotel pictures don't lie. It is that good. The pool area is roomy, however a word of warning one end of the pool is especially deep.

Santorini is wonderful. The views of the Caldera from the hotel were some of the best I have ever seen.Watching the large cruise ships come in daily and dock just below was a real treat. And the sunsets you will never forget.

In short, we loved our stay and we will definitely return in the future.

If you are thinking about going, just go!! You won't regret it.

Room Tip: Contact direct. Suites have more private balconies

This was a unique quite and true experience of Santorini. Staff were excellent, rooms clean and typical of Santorini. Location was fantastic with spectacular views over the caldera and you are in Fira after climbing the steps. Be prepared for lots of steps ( this is part of Santorini)

Room Tip: Be prepared for steps, view worthwhile.

As all the reviews say here it definitely has a great view and pool. Probably the best in Fira. Steps are part and parcel of Santorini and we were ok with them as we needed at least some exercise during our stay.

Room cleanliness when we arrived was not spectacular.

We also had an instance where we were told the day before our arrival that they were overbooked and we would have to be moved. Not happy. But then on wotif and their own website our room was still being offered at double the price we paid. When this was pointed out the over booking went resolved itself. Read into that what you will.

Staff very helpful.

Strange that you have to almost be sitting on the receptionists lap to get a wifi signal. 2 of 4 devices we had couldn't connect anyway. This should be extended to pool and rooms and it isn't difficult.

We had a 5 day stay at Athina Suites (room 4). The hotel is almost hanging from the cliff at the caldera, about 60 steps down from the orthodox cathedral. The location is very central in the busy town of Fira, where many daily visitors from the cruise ships are coming in. The fact that the hotel is located down the stairs gives the advantage of being more quiet than other hotels in Fira (with night life going on...), but the disadvantage of climbing the 60 steps each time you leave the hotel. On the other hand: climbing steps is connected with Santorini like lava is connected to a volcano.

Rooms are somewhat basic in furniture, with very small bathrooms, but eevrything you need is there, rooms are clean and the view is breathtaking. What sets this hotel apart, is the fantastic service. Manager Helena is doing everything possible (and even impossible) to make your stay at Santorini a memorable one. After picking up our rental car at the airport in Santorini, we were lost in the town of Fira. One phonecall to the hotel was enough. Renato, one of the staff members, was there after five minutes and drove us through the small streets as near as possible, helped us find a parking place and carried all our luggage down the stairs. And that was just the beginning.... Roland will be happy to serve you breakfast on your own private terrace at any time you like, and make your stay at the pool as pleasant as possible.

So, if you are looking for a good hotel on a central but quiet location in the town of Fira, Athina Suites will offer you the best possible value for money. Yes, rooms might be a bit basic and the TV is small with only 5 channels, but who wants to spend time in his room to watch TV on an island like this?!?

Go for Santorini, go for Athina Suites, and let Helena do her excellent job for you!

Room Tip: Room 4 was very quiet, private and spacious!

I visited Fira and stayed with my mother for 5 nights in May.

Pros:
Amazing View
Each room has its own little balcony
Breakfast (greek yogurt, fruit, tea/coffee, juice, breads and pastries, meat and cheese)
Nice pool
Lena the manager is very helpful and friendly with booking tours, checking in for flights, arranging transportation
The staff carries all bags up and down the stairs for arrival and departure
Arrival glass of vin santo, bottle of wine and fruit
Great Rate - got a 50% discount for early booking

Cons:
Rooms are a little on the small side - to be expected
Some maintainence needed to be conducted in the bathroom
Beware - there LOTS of steps - again to be expected. I counted 83 from the hotel entrance to town.
Bed was not very comfortable
Wifi only available in the lobby

Overall we really enjoyed our stay at Athina Suites and I would recommend it.
