I was worried about staying at this hotel because it was very cheap compared to others in the same area. We didn't organise to be picked up from the port so when we arrived we payed 20euros for a company to take us to the hotel. The golden star owner heard two of his guests had paid for a transfer and came and got us and made the company give us back our money. The hotel although not modern was really nice and very clean. You just can't fault it for the price! The pool was huge and location is spot on.

Room Tip: Third floor pool view

My family and I spent 5 nights at this hotel and were totally satisfied. It is a five minute walk to Fira's center and crater views. The hotel has a very large pool. It is family run and very clean. Katherina and her mother were very polite and accommodating with us. The father picked us up from the port and also dropped us off when we left. Most rooms have a view of the water. In the morning the donkeys that are used on the steps going up to Fira walk past this hotel on their way to the steps.

Me and a friend stayed here in June 2014. This was the last island on our 4 island trip and paid similar prices for every other hotel we stayed in.

We booked a triple room thinking it would be bigger. It wasnt. They just crammed a 3rd bed into the room. There was no spaces between the bed. And hardly any space in the walkways.

Our room was next to the pool. Our door would hardly shut. Was a mission to get it open and to close it. I asked if we could swap rooms and was told we couldnt. The floor always felt dirty. The shower was small.

Pool area was decent.

Guests would sit in the outside area late at night and the talking would wake us. Other weird noises in the hotel kept us awake as well. Sounded like machinery going. We were on the ground floor. Might be better on other floors.

You have to pay for breakfast (we didnt anywhere else) but they were nice and said we could have free tea/coffee in the morning).

Location was pretty good.

Room Tip: Not ground floor.

On arrival at Santorini airport we were met by a member of hotel staff that was waiting to transfer us to the hotel for free. This had not been discussed with us and was a brilliant surprise. Within a very short space of time we were in our room (14). Katerina showed us there and on entering the room i was happy to see that we had air con, a TV (not that we used it) and a fridge.

The room it's self was nicely decorated but basic, but we weren't planning on spending much time in the room and it was perfect for the money that we spent. Further to that the shower was powerful. All the staff members that I met (and there were several) were friendly, polite and would drop everything to assist us. The corridors were clean and tidy and the maids clearly work very hard and do an amazing job.

Katerina worked reception, gave out tourist info and worked the bar. On several occasions we bought drinks from the bar and i found they were priced very reasonably.

As other people have previously mentioned, the pool area is great. Once more it is clean and tidy, spacious and has plenty of sunbeds surrounding it. You will need to take your own towels, but i imagine anybody visiting Santorini will be taking these any how.

The hotel it's self is situated literally 4-5 minutes from the picturesque, bustling streets of Thira and so it is perfectly situated so that you are close enough to the action, but far enough away to get a good nights sleep without being disturbed. Of course there is the intermittent whiz of quads and scooters going past, but that's Greece in general and is no fault of the hotel staff.

I did not opt to get breakfast in the hotel as the town is so close that i decided to eat there every day, from what i saw it was basic. But on several mornings the staff provided me with free coffee, so no complaints there.

All in all The Hotel Golden Star is a gem that is well worth the money. I recommend anybody visiting Thira to stay there.

Firstly, I want to say that I understand that this place is not expensive, so I don't think my expectations were too high. However after being promised a pick up from the port, nobody arrived until we contacted them and about an hour and a half after our boat arrived we were picked up, with no apology. Overall the staff were not friendly. When we checked in they had no record of our booking, luckily we had a copy of our booking so they accepted that (after showing us lots of other people's bookings complete with personal info etc!) The room was very small with far too much unnecessary furniture. Breakfast was 7e each and consisted of tinned fruit, stale cereal and bad coffee with no fresh milk. Go elsewhere (lots of lovely places nearby like Pelican for breakfast). On the plus side, the location is great (very close to the old town), and there is a pool to enjoy.

There was a group of around 8 of us that occupied several rooms at the Golden star for a week this month (for a Wedding) and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. We notified the hotel 3 days before our arrival to double check if it was possible to get the free transfer from the airport, which we did! Katherine greeted us and we were shown to our rooms. Our group of 3 had a ground floor family room which didn't have a balcony but we didn't mind as it meant we could go to and from the room easily.
There is a large pool which includes a jacuzzi area(same temperature as the pool). There were always sun-beds available even at around 11 a.m everyday. You will need to bring your own beach towels, I am unsure if you may use the bath towels provided for the pool? The breakfast is mediocre but depending on how much you eat and what you like there are plenty of places to eat up the road. There is a hill to get up to the main square however this is the same all over Santorini, it only took 4 minutes to walk from Golden Star to the main square, there are a couple of newsagent shops along the way.

The rooms were clean and spacious. There is a hair dryer and fridge in each room with plenty of sockets. There is a safe n each room with a key lock. Unfortunately the outdoor pool bar wasn't open when we were there but Golden Star didn't seem to mind if we brought in food/drink from elsewhere, we always cleared up!

Other friends in our party stayed all over Fira/Firostefani, Golden Star definitely had the best atmosphere and outdoor pool area. After researching A LOT over the island and seeing where we could have stayed,we can say that we had a great stay at Golden Star for the money we paid.

Age range- 26-54
Bars: Franco's, Tangoe (next door to Franco's) does incredible cocktails.
Bar/Clubs: Murphy's, Koo Club (doesn't get busy till around 00:30)
Girls: Don't bring any heels/wedges.

We booked for a 2-night stay 2 months in advance. However, when we arrived at the hotel via the free ferry transfer we were unpleasantly surprised to be hustled off to Hotel Solaris down the street without any explanation from Katherine except that "you will stay at Golden Star tomorrow night". It turns out that Golden Star was fully occupied and instead of the room we paid for, we were forced to stay at an inferior alternative with only basic furnishing and nowhere near the quality of the original room. When asked for an explanation for why our reservation was not honoured without any prior notice, we only received bare apologies and we were even suggested to find another place to stay (which was clearly not possible since our advance booking had been fully paid for). Only after extensive disagreement were we offered complimentary breakfast for the next day. Even that turned out to be a disappointment-I would definitely not pay the regular price of 7 euro for only toast, cereal, meagre slices of cheese and ham.

The next morning, we moved into our originally booked room with a pool view, which, to be fair, was pleasant and exactly as depicted in the photos. The double bed turned out to be two twin beds pushed together with a gap in the middle but otherwise everything else was fine. It was a pity that the dishonest/irresponsible management practices of the hotel greatly detracted from our hotel experience.
