“Great in Any Season”
Reviewed 14 June 2014

This is really two reviews in one. Back in March I stayed at Lapland with a friend of mine for an extended weekend of cross-country skiing. It was our first time at Lapland Lake in winter and we were not disappointed. In fact, we felt like we had landed on a maple syrup bottle. As we’d ski by the little tupa village, and see the smoke floating out of the chimneys - not to mention smell the wood burning stoves – gliding by mountains of snow, we were both in heaven. It is a memory I doubt either of us will ever forget.

The trails themselves were excellently groomed, with enough variation to keep things interesting. And, the tupas (cabins) were clean, comfortable, and reasonably priced. Not to mention, they came equipped with everything we needed for the weekend: pots, pans, linens, even wood and kindling. The wood burning stove really made staying in a cabin in winter that much more unique and cozy. And the staff was super-friendly, going above and beyond to make our visit extra-special. This visit was just as great as the first time I went to Lapland last fall, no sophomore slump what-so-ever. What really struck me though, was just how much the folks at Lapland live for winter. They’re great in every season, but they really, really, really love winter.

Last weekend, my guy and I went back to Lapland for another get-away. Again, heaven. We were able to rent our favorite tupa (Poro), and we basically had the entire resort to ourselves for a few days. Even with no one else around the staff fired up the sauna for me every day without any complaints. Rather, they did so gladly. And having an Adirondack mountain lake all to yourself (with the exception of a loon or two) to kayak on is something pretty special, as well. The weather was excellent; it’s true, the tupas are cooler in the summer – no air conditioning needed.

Our camp fire was put to good use each night, as was our grill. Both had been kept in good condition and helped to make our stay in the woods that much more satisfying. Mike and Pat were especially helpful when we needed anything and went out of their way on more than one occasion. We can’t wait to go back, and we can’t imagine a world with Lapland Lake for city-weary souls like us to escape to when we need to get back in touch with ourselves. We’re grateful that Ann and Olavi share their piece of heaven with the rest of us.

Room Tip: Poro is great for couples - more than enough room with two bedrooms, two living areas, a kitchen, ba...

The beautiful trails at Lapland are always perfectly groomed and the snow reports are accurate and honest. Accommodations are basic yet comfortable and immaculate and kitchens are fully equipped. The wood stoves provide a nice touch and wood is delivered to your tupa. The staff at Lapland is always top notch and everyone is friendly and helpful. The sauna, which is for overnight guests only, is spectacular. I have been visiting Lapland Lake for almost 20 years in both the summer and winter seasons and have never been disappointed.

I have skied at Lapland Lake previously and know that the trail grooming is top notch and that it is located in a wonderful snow pocket. This winter, a friend and I decided to stay a couple of nights in one of the tupas. That was a good decision! The tupa was clean and fully equipped. All of them have electric baseboard heat, but our wood stove kept the place toasty even when the outside temperature dropped below zero F. The living room was bright and very comfortable. There were two bedrooms, one with a double and the other with two singles. Firewood was delivered each day. We brought our own food, but did have lunch at the grill and found it to be good. Everyone there was friendly. And, as before, the skiing was outstanding. There are nice touches like "hanging benches" to rest on in a couple of places and a lighted trail for night skiing. And the woods are gorgeous!

Room Tip: If there are just 2 or 3 of you, I recommend Pohjan Tupa. It is small so easily heated and very cozy...

We stayed at the lodge at the Lapland Lake. Lodge is basic, but comfortable, and definitely with a Finnish character.

Food at the Grille is very average. Finnish plate was not what I expected and soup was heavy.
They have sauna on premises, very small, with very weird hours of operation. They are open when people want to ski - during the day, and closed when people want to relax, and go there - at night.
I think the reason for this is because they do not have people working at night. Lodge closes at 5.30PM, and there is nothing over there after 5.30PM during the week. This was disappointing.
It maybe different at the weekend, though.

It would be nice to have sauna, and a nice place to eat - otherwise, this is very good place to visit for people who like cross country skiing

Spent a very pleasant Sunday in the sun. Excellent track setting and fairly good signage. Nice meal at the yellow restaurant.

Well worth the drive. Should have gone years ago. Did not check prices at ski shop.

Good snow shoe trail along the lake.

A friend and I had not been to Lapland Lake for 2 years, but immediately felt at home when we arrived. Our tupa was very comfortable and the ski and snowshoe trails were well groomed. It is amazing how peaceful and tranquil it is in the woods. There is a Finnish sauna that is wonderful. We had lunch in the restaurant and the food was very good. Kiitos to Ann and Olavi for making Lapland Lake such a wonderful place to vacation.

Why follow the heard to lake George? At Lapland you get peace and quiet, kayaks, mountain bikes, canoes, amazing clean little tupa/house, fire pit, perfectly toasted smores, best stars I have ever seen, fishing, hiking, swimming, hanging in a hammock and did I mention peace and quiet?

Thanks to the staff and ownership at Lapland for creating such a great place!
