This is really two reviews in one. Back in March I stayed at Lapland with a friend of mine for an extended weekend of cross-country skiing. It was our first time at Lapland Lake in winter and we were not disappointed. In fact, we felt like we had landed on a maple syrup bottle. As we’d ski by the little tupa village, and see the smoke floating out of the chimneys - not to mention smell the wood burning stoves – gliding by mountains of snow, we were both in heaven. It is a memory I doubt either of us will ever forget.
The trails themselves were excellently groomed, with enough variation to keep things interesting. And, the tupas (cabins) were clean, comfortable, and reasonably priced. Not to mention, they came equipped with everything we needed for the weekend: pots, pans, linens, even wood and kindling. The wood burning stove really made staying in a cabin in winter that much more unique and cozy. And the staff was super-friendly, going above and beyond to make our visit extra-special. This visit was just as great as the first time I went to Lapland last fall, no sophomore slump what-so-ever. What really struck me though, was just how much the folks at Lapland live for winter. They’re great in every season, but they really, really, really love winter.
Last weekend, my guy and I went back to Lapland for another get-away. Again, heaven. We were able to rent our favorite tupa (Poro), and we basically had the entire resort to ourselves for a few days. Even with no one else around the staff fired up the sauna for me every day without any complaints. Rather, they did so gladly. And having an Adirondack mountain lake all to yourself (with the exception of a loon or two) to kayak on is something pretty special, as well. The weather was excellent; it’s true, the tupas are cooler in the summer – no air conditioning needed.
Our camp fire was put to good use each night, as was our grill. Both had been kept in good condition and helped to make our stay in the woods that much more satisfying. Mike and Pat were especially helpful when we needed anything and went out of their way on more than one occasion. We can’t wait to go back, and we can’t imagine a world with Lapland Lake for city-weary souls like us to escape to when we need to get back in touch with ourselves. We’re grateful that Ann and Olavi share their piece of heaven with the rest of us.
