“Great Stay in Peral River”
Reviewed 26 July 2014

Not many know that there is a great full service hotel in the little town of Pearl River. Excellent staff and great location. These guys get it right. The hotel looks like a castle in the woods and behind it is a great golf course. The do a nice breakfast and the staff just helps out with what ever you need.

We had a last minute group of 12 rooms needed and was created with respect and helpfulness that I have never seen before. The hotel was able to accommodate us at a reasonable room rate and get our group on the same floor. There were several weddings going on at the hotel, but at no time did we feel that they were first or that we were in the way. In fact it was nice to see what a great job they were doing with the wedding parties. The restaurant was also great when we arrived with 20 - 30 people at once. All around this was a great experience and we had a great time in a very elegant and clean hotel.

Room was nice and large, and there was plentiful free parking! Would definitely stay here again. Although I didn't get a chance to try the restaurant, the menu looked good and was very reasonably priced.

Business traveler here. Pros: comfortable bed. Cons: so many small shabby problems - TV in room did not work, door handle to bathroom came off in my hand, air conditioning in room very very loud, on and off all night in a wake-you-up kind of way, elastic rubber bands from someone else's braces littering the floor, windows that fog up so you can't see outside, a distinct lack of recent vacuuming in the hallway and elevator. And as others have mentioned, the packs of shrieking party guests thronging the lobby and the elevator. Not so great when you're tired and all you want is a quick dinner. Also, the front desk staff honestly seem like they hate you. Just a vibe, but who needs it?

Hilton Pearl River is clearly designed to be a stage set for weddings, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, and the like, and I would imagine it does a decent job of hosting such events. But if you're not there for a special event, the place is pretty ordinary, and at times you may well feel like a second-class guest.

The hotel is impressive from the outside, and really does look like an inflato version of a Loire chateau (though I'll bet Hilton has architects who can make that same basic structure look like a Spanish hacienda or an English manor house...). There's a fountain out front, and a spacious lawn behind; interiors are unremarkable but clean.

We had two stays,on either end of an international trip; the first was a weeknight, and the second stay was for two weekend nights. Nothing wrong, particularly, with the first stay -- just an ordinary Hilton. But on the weekends, the whole hotel seemed to be given over to various wedding parties (aided, it must be said, by the expectation many people seem to have nowadays that if they're in a wedding party, nobody else exists anywhere on earth). Whoever made up our room had done a slap-dash job, leaving one of the beds thrown together rather than re-made in an orderly fashion. When we asked about that situation the next morning we were told the management would speak to the housekeepers, but that none of them had arrived yet. That was remarkable, since one of them had been in our hallway with her carts for quite a while, mostly talking on her cell phone. Maybe her shift had not yet begun -- and I hardly begrudge her a phone call or two -- but the front desk people didn't know what was going on in their own hotel.

Later that afternoon we returned to find that one of the wedding parties was conducting part of their ceremony right in and around the main entrance, with probably a hundred people and a horse (yes...) blocking access. A staffer was out front directing us to park well away from the happy multitude (fair enough); when we asked her if there were another entrance, she wouldn't say. Eventually we got escorted into the hotel through the fringes of the wedding crowd, which was awkward for us and the participants too. Happy weddings are a fine thing, but there was plenty of space behind the building where the gathering would have been at least equally at home and far less disruptive.

We were staying there to rest up a bit after a long-haul flight and a strenuous trip, so we didn't really appreciate what happened later on: at 2:30 AM a group of several dozen wedding guests went running, shouting, and in some cases screaming down our hallway for several minutes. A request that they quiet down produced only uncomprehending stares and glares. We called the front desk, and were told that a security person would be sent up; I suppose that must have been done, for after several more minutes the hell-raising subsided. But it took us a long time to get back to sleep, and it was a needless interruption of our, and others', rest. (WHAT IS IT, anyway, with the way some people feel entitled to misbehave at and after weddings...?).

The next morning we were presented with four very nice chocolate strawberries as a good-will gesture; the thought was sincerely appreciated on our end. Still, the hotel doesn't seem to be a great place to rest; the room-service dinner we had was, well, edible for the most part; some aspects of the service were careless, as noted; and in all it's not a place we plan to visit again.

Room Tip: Don't go on weekends or, if you must, do ask to be placed well away from wedding groups etc...

We just made our daughter's wedding at the Pearl River Hilton, and it was wonderful. The events and catering staff are meticulous about details and a joy to work with. We had about 60 guests staying over. The rooms were very comfortable with great bedding, Check-in was seamless and the gym and pool are an added bonus. Gerry Burns coordinated the entire event and made sure that the caterer, the florist and the band had everything they needed to do their jobs. My husband and I were able to enjoy the event without having to worry about any of the details. Our in-laws made brunch for guests staying over. It was held in a beautiful room overlooking the gardens. The hotel is a perfect venue for weddings with lots of out of town guests who want to be near enough to Manhattan to enjoy the theater or cultural events.

This is a great hotel for weddings and this was no exception. The staff is great and the hotel is clean, but it is showing its age. The decor is a little dated and just a little tired, though it is obvious they work to keep it looking good. The beds are super comfortable and the black-out drapes really do the job!
