This art gallery/ museum is such a delightful find in this quasi industrial city. there are new exhibits all the time, as well as childrens' workshops and special events, but the one we viewed a few months ago, "art at the core" ( still running until July 24) , is i think. not to be missed. paintings, sculpture, a soaring lovely space. peekskill is so easy to get to by car if you don't mind winding roads. for us jersey folk the winding road was not a lot of fun, but there is a train that goes there from nyc.

HVCCA has a great space with TONS of potential ---not to mention it's in a city with lots of artistic potential, too. I really like this young place and look forward to seeing them grow...

Step inside to see a NYC quality art museum. Very nice. They also have some interactive art events for kids and are open to groups from Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts etc.

If you can't get into NYC to see some good contemporary art, this place will give you enough to sate that urge. It's a personal collection turned into a museum so you are seeing the owners taste, but that's not such a bad thing. It can be very good. But still try to make it into the city to sate that other parts of your sole. And if you need some beverages or your car washed, you've got those businesses in the ams neighborhood.

Many folks take the train up from NYC to visit Dia Beacon in Beacon, NY. However, there is better art even closer in Peekskill, NY. Yes, Peekskill. Only an hour on the Hudson Line train from Grand Central.
Get in a taxi at the station and make sure you have the address, 1701 Main Street because in all likelihood the taxi driver will not have heard of it. Its a large warehouse building with plenty of safe parking in an area full of beer distributors and fence installers. Its not a pleasant walk from the station but do-able if needed.
Inside is a large two level space that hosts internationally known contemporary artists. We stopped in to see the Peekskill Project, a show about the Hudson Valley with paintings and sculpture in the main building, as well as a series of other sculptures found on lower Main and Water street.
The space allows for big work, but they have a series of movable walls, so are able to create intimate spaces. There is also a balcony gallery for smaller work.
The current show is terrific. We enjoy Storm King and Dia Beacon (less so) but here you will find new work, from artists working on the cutting edge. The work down on Main and Water is only open limited hours and is not heated so dress appropriately. Apparently some of it got damaged during the hurricane, but we enjoyed what we saw.
As for the rest of Peekskill, you will find some good food at Susans, or Zeffs, or get back on the train and go north to Cold Spring.
