Take the kids or out of town friends. 30 minutes hike to tower and then the climb. Reward is the view. Advise not to go in windy or rainy day.

We used an old version of "50 Hikes in the Hudson Valley" to find this place. The book didn't do a great job with directions, not the park's fault. However, once we got to the loop to the fire tower, the trail blazes were missing and / or colors reused to mark different trails. We took the left fork (white blaze) up and yellow blaze down, but there were a bunch of yellow blaze trails. Fortunately, the "main trail" is pretty obvious.

Fire tower view is great. Not a long hike, but steep and tiring.

We also walked around the lake. Most of the lake trail is well maintained, but the last part is very overgrown and has poison ivy.

Getting to the Fire Tower is a feat on it's own. Depending on which trail you take, the climb can be very steep with challenging footing. It's beautiful once you get up there. You can see for forever!

It is a bit of a hike up to the tower but, once you get there, the view is easily worth it. Make sure you bring your camer and a pair of binoculars. The best time to go up is in the fall when you can really appreciate the colors of the Hudson Valley.

If you have 90 minutes or so to spare and are in shape for a short, strenuous hike, I would recommend Stissing Mountain, just outside of Pine Plains, NY. The fire tower is quite tall, so it may not be for everyone, and there might be wind at the top, but the views of the Catskills to the Taconic's and all the land between is spectacular. The 900 foot or so elevation change in less than a mile isn't the easiest, but can be done by just about anyone with the proper time for rest / catching breath. Remember to wear boots as it is quite rocky, and wear bug / tick repellant.

This fire observation tower on top of Stissing Mountain was constructed in the 1930s. It has been transferred from the State to a local not for profit Friends of Stissing Landmarks (FOSL) who maintain it for public use. Stissing Mt rises 1000' above the surrounding valley and the 90ft observation Tower provides a spectacular view of nearby lakes and 5 states (PA, NY, Conn, MA and VT). The hike up takes 45 - 60 mins along an unimproved trail. Park at the FOSL parking area along the edge of Lake Road. You can also access the tower from the NYS Stissing Mt multiple use area off Hicks Hill Road which is approximately a 3 hour hike.
