Mendon Ponds Park has incredibly interesting topography, much of which was created by glaciers in the last ice age. A day hike will take you back to high school earth science as you traverse drumlins and kames and walk by kettle lakes. Hikes can include bogs, deciduous and coniferous forests, open meadows, streams, ponds and lakes. Great bird watching in all seasons including bluebirds in the summer and friendly chickadees and titmice who will feed from your hands in the winter.

If you're an equestrian, bring your horse for some great trail riding. Nordic skiers enjoy the trails in the winter.

There are open and enclosed pavilions and lodges for rent that make great party or picnic venues. One in particular is a 19th century cobblestone house with a lovely fireplace and outdoor patio.

Mendon Ponds Park is for most of the Rochester Region within a 25 minute drive. It is full of hiking trails and fair sized ponds to amble about and around, as well off trail points. If the weather has been fairly wet you want to avoid the lower grounds. If you are an avid hiker you should have sensible hiking boots for inclines and marshy areas.

There is a nature trail with a boardwalk through an open swamp area. Pets are not allowed there, but are permitted on leash in the other trail routes. Horseback riding trails are shared with the walking areas. Sledding and cross country skiing are allowed in the winter months with snow. It is also a good bicycle destination with places to rest before heading back to your original departure.

Mendon Ponds is perfect for ANY type of visit: picnic and walk with the kids? Check! Hiking, kayaking or fishing? Of course! I've been visiting for years and I can't say there's ever a time of year, or place in the park that isn't perfect to visit.

My husband and I came here on a visit to Canandaigua. I am originally from Rochester and left that area as a child, so I was interested to see this park again where we spent many a weekend so many years later. I was happy to see the park is still frequented by many people and schools for cross country events, etc. The beach area is now closed, but it felt great to sit there all the same. The birds are fun to watch, and there were deer. This is a great family place for picnics and hiking, and would be great for cross country skiing in Winter too! A very peaceful place in nature...glad it is still here for people to enjoy so many years!!
