“On Time and Convenient”

We frequently travel from the Boston area to central Long Island. By taking the Bridgeport Ferry we save the tense drive through the outskirts of New York City. Departure times are every hour during busy times and by making reservations ahead of time, entry is convenient and secure. The trip is relatively expensive compared to the gas saved, but the convenience and diversion is worth the money. It still amazes us to see such a large, hulky vessel make its way to the dock, disgorge large numbers of vehicles, and pack more in than one would think possible. A lounge area is generally large enough to handle the passengers, but the nice seats do fill quickly. The trip is one hour and the ferry has always been on schedule. If we arrive an hour earlier than our scheduled boat, we have always been able to take the earlier ferry as a standby. The trip is a lot more fun than dodging New York City drivers. The boats do have an alcohol lounge at the bow with a great view looking forward. A small snack bar, although overpriced, does offer a variety of foods and snacks that can be enjoyed during the trip. Some tables in the lounge have an entertainment center on which you can purchase game plays.

If you want to avoid the city traffic - this is definitely the way to go! Easy to get to - just follow the signs through Bridgeport. It is best to make a reservation during peak times, otherwise you may not get on. Relaxing trip across the Long Island sound takes just an hour and 15 minutes.

Have taken the ferry boat to Long Island many times over the years for business and pleasure, most recently a couple weeks ago. Parking in Bridgeport is very easy (and free) at Harbor Yard, you can take the shuttle which runs continuously, or make the 10 minute walk which is safe, even at night. The was a police presence which made you feel good. These ferries runs on a structured schedule and are never late. The crossing takes 1 hour and 15 minutes, and is a pleasure. If the weather is good, you can sit on top and catch the scenery and breeze. Buy your round trip tickets on board before disembarking. CC's accepted. Employees are courteous, quick and easy on and off the ferry. Highly recommended.

Last week I took the ferry for the 2nd time this year and in my life. The 1st trip was in Feb on our trip to the Olympics in Sochi (so didn't go out on the deck, burrrr). This most recent trip was for a party in Quogue LI. Sit in traffic or sit on the deck of a boat...hummm, easy choice! The staff on the ship and on the docks were professional and very service oriented and efficient. When you consider the cost of gas, tolls and time this is an absolute bargain!! Highly recommend it.

This is a convenient way to get from downtown Bridgeport, CT, to Port Jefferson on north-central Long Island, without the drive around New York City. However, the price is high and the boat seems rather old, worn and industrial, as if, like Bridgeport, it has seen better days. You're advised to use the rest-rooms at the dock, rather than the (dirty) ones on the boat. The ferry was quiet on a cold late-May morning, but probably is very busy in the summer, so follow the guidelines on the web about arriving early at the dock. Tickets for the car and driver can be bought on-line ahead of time, but once on board you still must take your receipt to the purser's office on the boat to get an exit pass and to pay for any passengers in the car (extra price). There is food for sale at the dock in Bridgeport and on the boat, but the choices are limited- probably best to eat at a restaurant in Port Jefferson, which seemed to be a cute but very busy town. The information desk at the Bridgeport dock stocks helpful maps of Long Island and brochures about area attractions. Overall, we preferred the ferry between New London, CT, and Orient Point, NY.
