Owner description: Overlooking the Hudson River in Poughkeepsie New York, the 200-acre Locust Grove Estate is a museum and nature preserve centered on a 45-room Italianate villa built in 1851. Begining in 1895 new owners William and Martha Young redecorated the mansion with their vast collection of art and antiques, and added new gardens. Mr. and Mrs. Young's daughter, Annette, lived at Locust Grove until 1975, preserving the estate essentially as her parents had used it. Inside the historic mansion, step back in time to the early years of the 20th century; the Young family's collection of Hudson River School paintings, early 19th-century American furniture, and personal possessions are still in place after more than a century.

“Extremely Interesting - A Must See!”
Reviewed 5 June 2014

This is the Samuel F.B. Morse Historical Site. Everyone knows that he invented the telegraph and the Morse Code . . . . I did . . . . . but I have no idea that he was an artist and an art professor at NYU. The exhibits are great. . . . interesting and educational. The tour of the home is well worth the time. The grounds are nice too and a great place to take a long walk and get a great view of the Hudson River from the cliff.

Check www.lgny.org for more information, hours, etc.

Plenty of FREE parking. Helpful staff. Don't miss it!

The very large peony collection at Locust Grove is at peak this week. Wow, was it beautiful! A very beautiful, large garden, very nice grounds and good trails, plus a very interesting house tour with a very knowledgeable guide. And a great gift shop, especially for hats and purses!

“Learn so much more!”
Reviewed 29 May 2014

Samuel F B Morse was an artist of great talent as well as an inventor. This site not only is about him, but about preserving a beautiful home and its grounds. Really enjoyed the time. Excellent guides.
