The Terrapin Restaurant in Rhinebeck is somewhat expensive (a Caesar Salad, for example, will run you $11.00) but worth the price for the quality of what you are served and the excellent service and atmosphere. Terrapin is located in a de-sanctified church and the interior of the building is quite impressive. We ate in the dining room (there are other options for seating and outdoor seating on the sidewalk in season) which was the old church sanctuary and really lovely. The wait staff is friendly and professional and incredibly efficient. The food is so good you will remember the meal long afterwards. I have often heard people complain that the vegetarian menu is lacking but I believe this depends on what one is looking for in a `vegetarian menu'. The restaurant does not cater exclusively to vegetarians and so, like any other restaurant, they have more meat dishes than strictly vegetarian ones. My daughter is a vegetarian and so is my wife and they both had excellent appetizers, salads, and entrees all of which were meat-free (example: Caesar Salad, Spring Vegetable Empanadas, Artichoke and Ricotta Ravioli). Again, it was not cheap (that one meal was $45.00 not including drinks) but it was very good. I highly recommend the Hangar Steak with mashed potatoes which has got to be one of the best things I have ever tasted in my life. They use only local ingredients and everything tastes incredibly fresh. Their beer selection is excellent and the Stella Artois on tap is magnificent. For those who like a mixed drink, I highly recommend the Manhattan shaken on the rocks. Credit Cards accepted and handicapped accessible. Reservations accepted and recommended. Terrapin gives you a complete dining experience and is definitely worth the price of the meal.

A group of 7 friends, we went there for a late lunch on a beautiful Saturday in late May. Despite the number of empty tables, it took them 15 minutes to seat us. Then, after we ordered various items, it took them about 20 minutes to start bringing our food.

One would think after such a long wait, they would at least deliver the orders for the entire table at the same time. Apparently, that was too much to expect! They slowly brought each order separately and delivered every meal to the wrong person at the table. To make things worse, everything had turned cold to tepid, including the French fries. This is supposed to be an "American bistro;" what is more un-American than cold, soggy French fries?!

We felt sorry for the wait staff. They too seemed to be the victims of extremely poor management at the restaurant. I asked to replace my cold fries. The waiter brought three orders of fries at no charge. But the damage had been done. What a shame that a well-situated restaurant in a quaint converted church, located ideally in the center of this attractive town, would have such a horrible service!

To the owner of Terrapin Restaurant: Please, either find a good manager or get out this business!

Having heard good things about Terrapin, we were looking forward to our meal, but we found it lacking in every regard. To start with the menu was rather limited for vegetarians, so having ordered what we could, we found that the portions were ridiculously small for the price, & somewhat bland. We left hungry, broke and disillusioned.

My friend and I recently went to a conference at the Omega Institute and went off site to Rhinebeck where we had dinner at Terrapin. It was wonderful. The restaurant has a main dining room in a church sanctuary-sized room, out-door seating and a Bistro with more casual fare. We ate in the main dining room. We shared a Caesar Salad, followed with my friend having the Hanger Steak special and I chose the Horseradish-Crusted Sushi-Grade Ahi Tuna with Miso Aioli. The Caesar Salad came split from the kitchen. It had very fresh baby romaine lettuce with a perfect amount of light dressing. I like the anchovies and they offered to bring some on the side. Nice touch. The Hanger Steak was served with Mashed Potatoes and Sauteed Kale. Everything was perfect and the meat was in relatively small pieces, perfectly cooked and tender as could be. The real masterpiece was Tuna. It was truly sushi grade, as advertised. So very melt in your mouth tender. OMG. Both the Horseradish crusting and the Miso Aioli were superb. It was served with Sauteed flavored oyster mushrooms and bok choy, both of which were perfect. Service was casual and helpful. No dessert. A wonderful meal.

Ok, went after daughter graduated from Marist college. Price fix was perfect. Had at table for 11 we were running late and guess what no attitude, it was all good. Laid back attitude everyone working there had a smile and great attitude. Needed a great relaxing meal after busy day. Waiter Patrick was great had a great wine suggestions and knew the food and made each meal sound special. Left with full happy bellies. Get the Soul Food dish won't be disappointed. Worth the trip.
