We were really looking forward to a special weekend in America's oldest inn but left bitterly disappointed by the lack of warmth or gratitude for our business. Moreover our room in the Gables building was pokey to say the least and the mattress made for a most uncomfortable night's sleep. The complimentary breakfast was nothing special and the WiFi was so slow we gave up. Would we go back? Highly unlikely. I think the fact that we were not asked about our stay at check out speaks volumes - the Beekman is not in the business of hospitality, it's in the business of making money.

The Beekman Arms is right on 9 and the road coming from Rhinecliff NY. Rhinebeck is a swanky little town with prices to match about 2 1/2 hrs. north of New York, an easy Amtrak ride. I stayed on a weeknight, so no 2 night stay required. The Beekman Arms dates back to a 1766 inn. The entry of the hotel, its reading room and the bar are as old as anything I've seen, though they must have been periodically redone. Low beams, very dark and atmospheric bar, and a nice glassed-in patio where continental breakfast is served. I asked for their least expensive room ($45 cheaper than most B & Bs in the area) - got one in their back cottage which is ground level. Was bright red with two huge poster beds, nice and warm. Decor is dated, but I like that. Lovely garden with winter ornamental cabbages, chrysanthemums and 2 busloads of children who had carved pumpkins to display for Halloween. Walk right down the street for dinner or a movie (indy movie theater). To those who complain it's "old" - other local B & Bs are very pricey, and in older homes - that's the charm of this area. Plan your trip to hear some excellent music at Bard College, or during the summer music festival.

Stayed at The Beekman Arms for two nights. As we approached the property my heart sank. It certainly looked "old". Car parking is at the back of the property with no side access, so getting suitcases in is a chore. Thank goodness for a staff member who helped us with that and took them upstairs to our room. But we had to ask for that at the reception desk, where we were otherwise greeted with indifference. Now for the room. Certainly overpriced for sure. Two beds so high we had to climb in and so narrow I was scared I would fall out! Creaky floor, dirty carpet, tv in a cupboard that we had to prop one door open. Bathroom the smallest ever! Two radiators blasted out heat to sauna conditions, windows would not stay open to ventilate room. Mind you, a godsend probably, the main road thundering traffic non stop till the early hours. This place certainly needs bringing into the 21st century. Trading on the name " Oldest ? Inn, just isn't enough. Stay there if like the property you're old and creaky.

Stayed in a large, ground floor room in the original Delamater House. We were on a long weekend with friends who also stayed at the property. Lots of dining choices with. Walking distance in the town of Rhineback. This is a historic inn so it (happily) lacks customary amenities. The TVs for example looked ancient, but not an issue with so many local attractions. However, wi-fi is free. Continental breakfast at the conference center was basic. Lots of public sitting and conversation areas at the main Inn building and at Delamater. A good base for exploring the Hudson Valley.

Room Tip: Select Room 52 in original Delamater House for space, privacy and access to a great adjacent sitting...

There was no much room at the Beekman Arms inn and not much of a welcome either. With the notable exception of the restaurant staff, who were friendly and efficient, service was perfunctory, impersonal and cold. No words of welcome when we arrived, no offer of help with bags and on checking out, no enquiry about the quality of our stay. With staff too preoccupied with their private conversations or on-line to make eye-contact, the overall impression was that our money was welcome but us - not so much. I had telephoned to ask for a nice room, but ours had just enough space for a queen bed so high I struggled to get on/in it. Only room for one bedside table, one reading lamp so one of us had to go without. The rug prevented the door from opening fully. It all looked tired, cramped and dingy. Old -world charm? Old, certainly. But somehow, the charm got lost along the way. Pity.

My husband and I have been visiting the Beekman Arms every fall for the past 6 or 7 years. What's not to love,,,old world charm you can no longer find, phenomenal food (trust me here, get the chicken pot pie), and a bartender that not only makes fabulous drinks but also makes everyone feel at home (thanks Tracy).

We had such a good time (again), that we booked a weekend in February for our anniversary.

Took a trip through the Hudson River Valley and stayed at the Beekman Arms. It is the oldest, continuously running Inn in America and is a little piece of history (George Washington slept here and Alexander Hamilton's famous duel occurred here) as well as a lovely place to stay. Rooms are generous and well-appointed, baths are small but well-outfitted and the staff is lovely. Based on my experience with all surrounding towns (Redhook, Germantown, etc), Rhinebeck is the only place to stay - period! PS, the dinner and drinks were great too (bartender rocks). Enjoy!
