Finger Lakes Wine Country
Reviewed 28 May 2014

The Finger lakes Region of New York State is one of tyne most beautiful regions in the country. There are 11 different lakes that run roughly north-south centered between Buffalo and Syracuse. Some are close to 40 miles long, and all are surrounded by beautiful hills. Seven of these lakes produce local wines. There are over 100 wineries in the area and many arrange tours with sampling at the end. Although New York wines are arguably not super competitive with California wines, some are quite good.

The New York Wine and Culinary Center sits at the top of Canandaigua Lake and offers dinner classes and other events. It's restaurant has great food and many of the better Finger Lake wines.

Drive around the lakes in early fall to see grapes being harvested, beautiful fall foliage, quaint towns and numerous other attractions. One is the Constellation Brands Marvin Sands Performing Arts Center. The Sands family started a high volume lower quality wine company in the '40s that was transformed by the current family to be the world's #1 premium wine producer.

We've been to most areas of the world to taste wines. The only one that might be close as far as scenery, would be the high country of Mendoza, Argentina. The reds of California, France and Italy are better. Alsace whites are close. But that said, the overall experience of the Finger Lakes area is truly second to none. Add in world class lodging and dining and you have to best! Go late fall or early spring to stay out of the crowds. Don't forget to try the distilleries too!

If you love rolling hills and wine country, this area is for you! There are so many activities to choose from, like visiting wineries, visiting majestic falls, shopping at unique places like the Windmill or Oakhill bulk foods. You can even catch a race at Watkins Glen International! There is something for everyone!

We try to do this at least once a year! There are wineries and distilleries ! If you prefer beer, there are a few breweries to be found along the wine trails, too ! Have a designated driver to have a safe ride !

The Seneca lake wine trail is varied in both, wine variety and venues. Starts and ends in Geneva NY. The other lakes trails are also a great trip, plan an overnight or 2 at one of the many nice ( in some cases world class, 5 star ) inns and B&Bs. Have a great time.
