The Finger lakes Region of New York State is one of tyne most beautiful regions in the country. There are 11 different lakes that run roughly north-south centered between Buffalo and Syracuse. Some are close to 40 miles long, and all are surrounded by beautiful hills. Seven of these lakes produce local wines. There are over 100 wineries in the area and many arrange tours with sampling at the end. Although New York wines are arguably not super competitive with California wines, some are quite good.
The New York Wine and Culinary Center sits at the top of Canandaigua Lake and offers dinner classes and other events. It's restaurant has great food and many of the better Finger Lake wines.
Drive around the lakes in early fall to see grapes being harvested, beautiful fall foliage, quaint towns and numerous other attractions. One is the Constellation Brands Marvin Sands Performing Arts Center. The Sands family started a high volume lower quality wine company in the '40s that was transformed by the current family to be the world's #1 premium wine producer.
