Description: The Tap & Mallet is owned by Joe McBane and Casey Walpert. Joe is from England, and has lived in the United States since 2000. He managed The Old Toad for the first 7 years he was in the country. Casey opened The Bug Jar on Monroe Avenue and currently owns Mex on Alexander Street. We aim to be the best destination in Rochester for beer and pub food. We believe that having the best beer requires a balance between freshness and selection. We chose to limit our draft lines to 30 with the addition of 1 cask ale so that a fresh glass of beer can be guaranteed every time. The majority of our lines rotate so that there is always something new to try. Our inspiration for the menu comes from a love for food prepared from top quality fresh ingredients. Whether our guest wants dinner or just a snack they should always expect a range of flavors from around the world at an affordable price. The atmosphere is that of a contemporary pub. It is comfortable and welcoming to all. There is soft lighting and music that doesn't overwhelm. We want people to feel relaxed and at home. While we specialize in fine beers we understand that drinking beer is a truly enjoyable social past time. No one should ever feel bad about their choice of drink due to an elitist attitude. Many of our guests are interested in exploring new flavors and we are there to help and encourage them with their selections.

If you find that you have a spare couple of hours wandering around Rochester then the Tap & Mallet is a good place to go to brush up on you knowledge of beers and brewing. The wide range of beers on tap and bottled means Tap & Mallet can stake its’ claim as one of the better bars I have been to. Allow a good hour to read all the available beers on their drinks menu, it is a good read in itself. The bartender was quite knowledgeable on the various beers though there were a few on the list that he struggled with. Mind you that is not surprising considering the range of beers available. They have a couple of Belgian beers that I hadn’t heard off, and if alcohol content is what you’re looking for, then there are a couple of heavy hitters that will slow you down pretty quickly. Take a taxi when come here, or arrange for a good friend to drive you home.

Been going for years. Always a great beer selection, but that's no enough to make up for the overpriced, mediocre food, and incredibly poor service today. Gourmet grilled cheese sounded good, but it was more like toast. I swear there was no more than 2oz of shredded cheese on the bread. The soup was barley warm. The worst, however, was the service. Didn't even have a chance to complain about the food. The waiter delivered our order, and never stopped again. No "how is it so far," "would you like another beer." Nothing. Another employee dropped our check, and did not communicate. Orig. waiter brought our check back, dropped it, and didn't say a word. Too many good choices in Rochester to put up with this kind of experience. Won't be back.

One side has a large bar area with tables, a wall separates this side from the dining area with more tables and high back booths which are great for privacy.
Our server Max was very friendly and attentive. He was also knowledgeable about the food and the craft beers.(there is a 5 page list of available beers!)
The food menu itself contains tapas, salads, pub fare and full dinners.
Some of the dishes are eclectic and worth a try.
Although I mentioned the large beer list they have a full line of regular and adult beverages.
T&M also has some tables out front and a deck at the back of the building.
The 4 in our group had a great time. This was our first visit but it will not be our last.

Friends and I gather here every month, six weeks or so. Great beer selection with hundreds in the bottles & dozens on tap. The grazing food is great... three meals now and I've enjoyed them all. Nice bar with good food, great beer. You'll enjoy the cool atmosphere.

There are so many good things to say about Tap and Mallet. It's probably best to start at the top and give homage to the owner. Joe McBane has such an awesome rags to riches sort of story, although the rags part may not quit hit the mark. He's just an incredibly hard working, nice guy who knows so much about beer. His right-hand man, Chris is another factor in the success equation at T&M. The are both walking beer encyclopedias, and nice people to boot. If you are into craft beer, you MUST try this place out.

Tap and Mallet is also a community minded establishment. From the artwork to the involvement in different community activities, it is clearly integrated. Don't count on catching up on the current scores of your favorite team sports on TV, but rather DO count on a fun environment to catch up with friends over a good beer.

Okay, so the food. I will be honest, when I first visited T&M a few years ago, the food was, in my opinion, not consistently good. It seemed to depend on the day you visited, or perhaps who was in the kitchen. Not sure. But that was then. I would say over the last year or so, there has been a noticeable improvement, evidenced by the perpetually packed dining area rather than just the bar. Believe it or not, my very favorite item on the menu is their BL&T. They also have amazing English chips (French fries).

Give this place a try!
