“One of Upstate NY's oldest Public Structures”
Reviewed 2 August 2013

The Charlotte lighthouse is located on a promontory above the Genesee River, about one third of a mile south of Lake Ontario. When built in 1822, land closer to the lake was marsh and could not support the weight of a 40 foot stone structure. It has been lovingly restored by a non-profit civic group of volunteers, and its adjacent 1863 lightkeeper's house is filled with local navigation memorabilia, and anecdotal information of the visit to the shores by British warships during the War of 1812.

“Charming Stop”
Reviewed 30 July 2013

This is a charming little stop on the road to elsewhere! It seemed odd to me that a lighthouse would be so far away from the water, however, the explanation comes with the tour.

The grounds & gardens surrounding the lighthouse are well tended (immaculate, actually), the lighthouse itself is quite small & the museum attached is quaint, however, the 3 volunteers that were in attendance were just so enthusiastic that they made this a worthwhile stop on our road trip.

Price of admission included a "guided tour" of the museum, which didn't take long as it's quite small, however, Frank was very knowledgeable and encouraged questions. Our trip up the spiral staircase was short (not a very big lighthouse), however, we were not rushed when we got to the top & the view of the river and marina where lovely.

I wouldn't go out of my way to visit the lighthouse, however, if you're in the neighbourhood, it's worth a stop. The climb to the top was easy (40-45 steps up a spiral metal staircase), however, the last portion (perhaps 5-8 steps) were up a ladder. It was not strenuous or frightening, however, it could be an issue for younger children or those with more limited or unsteady mobility.

“History on the river bank”
Reviewed 11 July 2013

The light house itself is charming and the the museum at the lighthouse is quaint and informative. The grounds around the lightouse are immaculate and the view of the river is very nice. It is odd to find a lightouse so far from the shore line of the lake and mouth of the river though.
