“Delightful Small Plates”
Reviewed 31 May 2014

We hadn't been to Tapas 177 for a few years and were lured back Thursday night by our WXXI MemberCard which was about to run out for the year. Overall we really enjoyed our experience. The basement dining room has that shabby-chic vibe going with some nice music playing. On a warmer evening the courtyard would have been a perfect spot to sit. We really enjoyed the calamari salad and lamb chops, but the crab cakes were much more "cake" than "crab". All of the flavors were fresh and vibrant, and I had some delightful wine. Service was prompt and professional - an unordered drink made it onto our bill but was removed graciously when I asked about it. We found the food quite "worldly" rather than the Spanish influence that you might expect at a "tapas" place - it is more "international small plates" in concept. Also prices are higher than you would traditionally expect for true "tapas", but if you think of them as "sharable small plates" there is value and quality here.

“Great tapas no matter where you eat it”
Reviewed 11 May 2014

This is going to be a "food-only" review, because I visited their exhibit at the Rochester Lilac Festival instead of getting my food inside their restaurant. Still, this place has a great reputation, and I could understand while. Their food is OUTSTANDING!

Today, I sampled their crab cakes, as well as their fried spring rolls. The spring rolls were served with a very excellent sweet and sour sauce, which complimented the savory flavor from the crispy rolls. The crab cakes were served with a duo of sauces; one a flavorful avocado sauce that was reminiscent of guacamole, while the other was a very spicy remoulade that put a bit of sweat on my brow. It was VERY good.

The server at this booth was super friendly, and she prepared the second dish to my request; a half portion for half price, (hey...it was only lunch!). This was a great meal by a great restaurant.

“Outstanding. A real surprise.”
Reviewed 1 May 2014

We didn't know quite what to expect of this place but decided to try it because it sounded different and interesting. There were five of us in our group (all friends attending a club meeting). We went without reservations hoping to be able to get a table. Fortunately we were early enough that tables were available. Upon entering Tapas 177 you come into a large room with a bar and no tables. Quite a few people were at the bar and so the room was busy but not overcrowded. After a few minutes were were led downstairs to the basement which turned out to be a most pleasant and well decorated dining room. The menu offers a large choice of Tapas plates many of which sounded from their description to be quite appetizing. But we weren't sure how big the portions would be and so 4 of us opted to choose from the more limited selection of entree dishes. The fifth person had a salad and a tapas plate. All of the food was outstanding. We had absolutely no complaints. Also, menu, whether tapas or entrees was quite creative and offered a number of very different an unusual taste combinations. This is definitely the place to go in Rochester. Not cheap by any means, but certainly good value. We'd go back again without hesitation.

“Just amazing food”
Reviewed 3 April 2014

Visited Tapas on a Saturday night with a friend. The menu features several small plates for a table to split. Although it was a busy Saturday night the downstairs dining area was not loud. We shared the rack of lamb and I tried the Quail and baked cheese salad. Both dishes were simply amazing. The service was fantastic and our waiter was friendly. The bar area can be on the louder side when it is busy because it is on the smaller size.
