Seems to be promoted as the jewel in Rochester's crown. Frankly is it boring and no scenic at all. It might have historic significance but ..... yawn

Been coming to Rochester for many years but never took the time to explore the downtown. A recent article in the Toronto Star mentioned the High Falls. So after a visit to the Rochester Market (great), we tried our GPS but for some unknown reason it failed to locate it, then we just followed the Genesee River in the downtown and there it was. It was a beautiful spring day and there was lots of water and we strolled across the pedestrian bridge which gave a great view. It was also nice that at the other side was another watering hole the Genesee Brewery. A great stop for lunch and thirst quenching!

The view from the pedestrian bridge overlooking High Falls in downtown Rochester, NY is nothing less than spectacular. In addition to the 80 foot High Falls that spills out of downtown Rochester, there is the great view of the city skyline, and directly below, both the rapidly flowing Genesee River and an interesting isolated island. You may feel like a spy in a 40's movie rendez-vousing along the bridge. At the eastern end of the bridge is a brewery with a visitor's center, if you have the time. An interesting fact about High Falls: It used to be 16 feet higher. It was cut down from its original 96 foot plummet to only 80 feet when they realligned the Genesee River which had been flooding the downtown about a hundred years ago. Another interesting fact: About 175 years ago or so, a daredevil jumped over the Niagara Falls in a barrel and survived the plunge, and then came over to Rochester to do the same thing at High Falls, which is only half the height of the Niagara Falls, but this time died.

Part of the walkway over the river is plowed so you can walk across and get great views and pictures of the falls even in winter. The Genesee Brewery is a great place to stop for a tour, tasting, shopping, exhibits, and lunch or dinner.

It is amazing how you can find a beautiful waterfall in the middle of Rochester NY. Went to the visitor's center. Met by a very friendly knowledgeable young man who was very eager to answer our every question. When in Rochester this is a can't miss. Agree the surrounding area could use some sprucing up - garbage picked up, weeds pulled, etc.
