“Pretty Average Science Museum”
Reviewed 21 June 2012

The Science Center was updated about a decade ago and seemed pretty modern at the time, with modern interactive exhibits. Today it's started to feel a little weathered and dated again. The traveling exhibits are excellent, but this is nothing special for an out-of-towner. It's a nice museum for a city Rochester's size, but can't compare with big city science museums.

“Spend the whole day and more here!”

The Rochester Museum and Science Center is a hugely popular institution with locals, and is gaining recognition outside the immediate area! We have been taking our two daughters there since they were toddlers - they are now 14 and 16 and still love to visit! The Museum is three stories, each crammed with fun areas for all ages! The main floor has a climbing wall, a weather TV reporter activity, a simulated ride to the bottom of Lake Ontario (think Disney's "Star Tours" !), an encounter with a mammoth and a mastodon - and a host of other things for kids and adults to get engaged in. You'll also find "At the Western Door" and an adjacent area devoted to looking at Native American cultures in the Americas - the "Western Door" exhibit is so well done - the story of Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) world view and explanation of the impact of European encounter on native culture in our area is fantastic - and adults will appreciate the accompanying art of Ernie Smith. The museum also has areas devoted to historical and more contemporary African American culture - the "Underground Railroad" exhibit contains interesting biographies of local individuals (black and white) who played a part in the URR and abolition movement as well as a way to follow the exhibit as a small child would - so no one is bored, young or old! The Museum also has many hands on science areas and the most incredibly funny and engaging Bill Nye-like science professor who does live shows throughout the day! They also have a quite nice cafe in the basement area and a planetarium in another building (separate charge I believe) with changing shows, You will definitely be smarter, and more tired, than a fifth grader when you leave the RMSC! And be sure to check this out - if you have a science museum membership with your local science museum, you may be able to get into RMSC for free with a reciprocal deal many museums have across the country!
