Came to New Paltz without a reservation to mountain bike and hike. We were considering staying at The Mohonk Mountain house--- for upwards of $600 per night. We were biking on the railroad trail that goes though New Paltz and ventured off to ride through the quaint town of Rosendale. There is one Main Street with about a dozen businesses. We rode past this beautiful Inn and decided to check it out. An absolute GEM, and the rate was under $200 midweek. Rooms are beautifully appointed and very spacious. Loaded with charm; old photos from Rosendale's past line the walls and the rooms. Modern amenities such as strong Wifi, flat screen TVs, comfy linens, towels and bathrobes provided comfort for travelers used to luxurious accommodations. The Inn is situated on the Main Street and has a beautiful front porch with quaint benches. The tavern in the back has a gorgeous deck overlooking a river (not sure what river). The deck is beautifully lit up at night. The tavern offers dinner but we were able to walk to two local restaurants that were both delicious. A vegetarian place that was good and The Bywater Grill - which was AMAZING!! The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. Mike, one of the owners asked our plans for the day and when I said mountain biking he gave us free passes for the Mohonk Preserve saving us about $40 in admission fees. The included breakfast was DELICIOUS. Plenty of options to suit different diets. We stayed in Room 4 - which has a view of the Main Street. The room is very large, there is a separate alcove where the queen sized bed is with night tables. The main part of the room has a couch, chairs and small tables. Also a nice closet and new bathroom with a full sized bathtub. We had planned to stay one night and extended it to two. We had fantastic time!

Room Tip: Loved Room 4!

We stayed but one night in the 1850 House, which we used as a base for bicycle outings on the Wallkill Valley trail and some others in the area. We could not have been happier -- a gracious innkeeper in Amy S., a room that gracefully combined 19C character with 21C conveniences, a backyard patio overlooking a river (and the soaring old rail trestle that now carries the bike trail), and a freshly made breakfast in the morning.

To be sure, Rosendale is not a city, and barely even a town. The inn is right on the main (and only) drag in the hamlet, and its decidedly non-happening entertainments appeared to be the only sign of life after dark. Still, thanks to Amy's inn, we were very happy campers (with none of the inconveniences of camping out).

Was there this past weekend with my family for a family event close by. Very comfortable rooms and charming deck on the outside accompanied with a great view. Would definitely recommend. Right in the middle of town so access to other restaurants and stores.

We had a wonderful time staying here. From the moment we checked in until we left, we loved every minute. The staff was so nice, from showing us around, serving on the patio, serving an amazingly delicious breakfast, making hiking suggestions, and checking out. I can't say enough about the gracious hospitality we received. I highly recommend the flat bread pizzas on the deck while drinking a glass of wine and listening to wonderful music by a talented guitar player. (The pizza was loaded with delicious fresh roasted vegetables and there were other flat bread options as well.)
The beds are super comfortable and the rooms are lovely with original flooring from 1850!

Room Tip: We enjoyed a room overlooking the river. I think it was room 2.

Its official! The 1850 House Inn & Tavern is my family’s favorite place to stay.

Our four-night visit at the hotel was nothing less than marvelous. The common areas and rooms played off the town and building’s rich history without compromising on modern comforts or updated decor. But that’s only half of why we enjoyed our stay so much, the rest of the credit goes to the owner and staff who became like loving family by the time we left. Nothing, and I mean nothing, was ever over looked and we were so taken by the kindness/attentiveness that made the experience so warm.

We booked the suite, which was beautifully appointed like the other rooms but included a separate bedroom and half bath for myself. Everything was comfortable and clean; in fact, it didn’t take this germaphobe too long to feel right at home.

The tavern and living area were beautiful and relaxed as well, allowing you to come and go as you pleased to sit at the bar or nestle on the couch with something warm from the Keurig. The large deck outside played host to guests at all times of the day from early morning breakfasts to late afternoon drinks, amazing flatbreads, and other nibbles cooked on the wood fire oven right there.

Being nestled at the base of the Joppenbergh Mountain and the Rosendale Trestle (as a part of the Wallkill Valley Rail Trail) we found ourselves enjoying morning hikes and taking in the views before we started our days. Rosendale is also a quiet little town that boosts an amazing vegetarian café (across the street), alternative stores, a theater, Pilates/yoga studios, a bakery, and a cheese shop. (Think of it as a calm New Paltz and you’ll have a good picture.)

Our stay in one word: perfect.

This old Inn has been redone to perfection and is a fantastic place to stay. It's a real gem, and its a great addition to the town. I perform livemusic across the street at The Rosendale Cafe a couple times a year, and I always look forward to my nights at this Inn. It's EXACTY what a weary traveler like me hopes for, comfortable, friendly, beautiful and well run. I am so glad this place exists!

Room Tip: There's not a bad room in the house. Every room is well appointed and thought out.

At friend's recommendation, we stayed two nights at the 1850 House Inn while visiting the FDR library and other tourist locations. The Inn and rooms have been beautifully decorated and maintained. We enjoyed chatting with the crowd at the Tavern later in the evening. Breakfast was excellent. The town is small and funky.

Room Tip: We stayed in room #4--very well decorated. Pick a back room if you are sensitive to street noise.
