“Wonderful service, intimate atmosphere, cozy, charming, classy”
Reviewed 18 June 2012

The American Hotel has always held a special place in my heart as I have many memories of spending time roaming the front porch and cozy downstairs as a child while my parents and their friends enjoyed cocktails. So when looking for a place to stay in the Hamptons area this past week, I was thrilled to come across the American Hotel. Their website is not impressive, but all the better - it's a signifier that the hotel is still as old-world, classy, and resistant to unqualified patrons' desires for "new, contemporary" amenities and style. After reading reviews here, I was a bit wary of staying there - and it's true, the hotel is not a fit for every traveler. Yes, expect some creaky furniture, narrow hallways and steep stairs... but if you're looking for classic, high-class, old-world Americana, then I couldn't recommend a better place (anywhere). By the way, essential amenities couldn't have been nicer: a comfortable bed with luxurious linens and pillows, the bathroom was beautiful, cleanly modern though in a traditional style with a large jacuzzi and rain-shower, l'Occitane toiletries... Service was warm, consistent, intimate and personalized - the kind that is catered to individuals' needs. A wonderful breakfast with quality (strong) coffee, cheeses and delicious croissants (my fellow traveler, who is French, was thoroughly impressed - on every account), NYT delivered to your door in the morning, gracious waitstaff, a barman with 20+ years of experience and stories, amusing fellow guests and diners... this place oozes history, class, and frankly a good time. It was hard to leave, and I can't wait to come back.

Room Tip: "the Apartment"... a rich, quaint salon/sitting area, then upstairs a spacious but cozy, b...

We spent two nights at the American hotel on main street in Sag Harbor, NY. Read several reviews on this website and were a little skeptical. Food was incredible and the service was nothing short of first class. As far a parking goes.... You are on your own. Found several long term free lots nearby.
We got the queen condo room adjacent to the main hotel and it was only 30.00 more a night. Huge bedroom overlooking main street with a large sitting room adjoining. The marble bathroom with large tub and separate steam shower were fabulous. THEN down the hall is the Billiard Room with 9 foot pool table, beautiful artwork and grandfather clock.
THEN there is the little kitchen and out the back door to the meditation garden. Best surprise I have ever had ( for a room that is) !

Clearly this hotel doesn't care about its reviews because it is worse than ever. I had the unfortunate obligation to stay there due to certain circumstances. I spent one night there and the pompous attitude, poor service and general rudeness of the staff was worse than ever.

We went there with our daughters for MLK WE with our daughters and took two rooms.
Nice and cozzy rools at a not too expensive prive because of the season.
Lunch was good
Diner too much expensive.

I live in the area and go from time to time but it is just not worth it. The food is OK but the all male staff are beyond rude, especially the bartenders who have worked there for 14 years, The bimbo hostess with her her clompy shoes just makes the experience more unpleasant. I don' t know why anyone would would eat here.

I would not recommend this hotel to anyone. When we arrived there was no parking and
no one offered to help us with our luggage. The staff were rude and pompous. I had to beg to be able to print some documents on their office computer...no business amenities whatsoever. They are very proud of their restaurant, but the presentation and quality were mediocre at best. When we checked out, again no help with luggage and we had to haul our bags 2 blocks to where we had managed to find a place to park. There isn't even a loading space in front of the hotel. The beds were hard and the rug was dirty and sticky. The lighting in the room was dim and barely adequate.

It's very simple. The food at the American Hotel Restaurant is definitly good and there are some very nice servers, BUT, the chances of getting one of those servers is a complete crap shoot. AND - unless Vinnie is at the Bar, the bartenders are RUDE and act like they're doing you a big favor. I accidently spilled a glass of wine and the bartender told me in a curt manner - "you should be careful next time." He need not worry since there will be no next time. Funny thing is, I live in the area and am a regular at many of the local upscale restaurants and the bartender and manager just didn't care. Many of my local friends have had similar experiences there. There are SO many great restaurants in the Hamptons, save yourself some aggravation and stay away from this place...
