“Hard to find a better hotel in the Hamptons”
Reviewed 1 October 2013

Ok, this is not the best, most luxurious place I ever stayed in, but:
- the staff is incredibly friendly and nice,
- the restaurant is really quite good (french cuisine with an american twist),
- the location is perfect,
- breakfast on the terrace on the morning of a sunny day is out of this world,
- the building is VERY romantic,
What else do you want?
Of course, apart from the above, its a little on the expensive side, the cancellation conditions are punitive, there is no room service, and the place looks more like a countryside b&b than an expensive hampton hotel, but hey, you're in the hamptons and you're about to have a great day...

We had the nicest room there.
The staff were extremely warm and welcoming.
The restaurant was outstanding: food, ambiance, service.

Located in town of Sag Harbor itself;
Waterfront and shops just short walk up the street.

Everything was fine...the details: sheets, silverware, bathroom fixtures, NY Times outside door in am, etc...

Excellent stay & would love to return.

Room Tip: The corner rm upstairs with the high ceiling was the BEST rm in the place (#11?)

The rooms are charming but well appointed and the restaurant serves great food in a beautiful Victorian setting. It feels a but less formal to dine at the bar. The roast beef is a specialty and deservedly so. It is Hamptons style, expensive and snobby clientele, but get past that and enjoy.

We had two rooms (first floor) at the beginning of July for one night and our only regret was that we did not stay longer. The rooms were period rooms and truly elegant. Teh bathrooms were exquisite and mine had a huge tub. Lovely additional touches: Frette, L'Occitane, complimentary Aqua de Panna...all of my personal favorites were very nice surprises. It was quiet as well--which was a surprise-- given that the room is above the bar/restaurant. Being on the main street, it is easy to walk anywhere and nice to have a stroll after dinner. The only drawbacks are parking and one set of stairs up to the first floor rooms that have to be navigated. Neither was a big pain, but there were three of us (myself and my parents) and managing the luggage up the stairs presented small challenges. We spotted a certain former NYC mayor having lunch at the hotel restaurant. Dinner there was spectacular.

We did not have the opportunity to stay, but did enjoy lunch and a very pleasant afternoon there. The service it exceptional and the staff very friendly. Ray is a true gentleman and a great bartender. Food is of the highest quality and the atmosphere makes the American Hotel a "must visit" when you are in the area. If you are not, make a detour, it's worth it.

I have eaten here the past 2 years for my birthday. It is a great atmosphere, wonderful staff and delicious food. It is located right by the water in the quaint town of Sag Harbor. The wine menu is unbelievable - it takes up a large binder.
