“Great value for Lake Placid/Saranac Lake”
Reviewed 1 February 2011

This was our second stay at the Sara-Placid Motor Inn. We were drawn there by the jacuzzi suite, as we planned on a long day of cross country skiing before our stay. As with our prior visit (last winter after snowshoeing up Mt. Marcy), we were very satisfied. The motel is easy to pass by on the road, but the suite we stayed in offered a great value compared to similar rooms at higher end properties in the area. The Inn appears to be primarily owner-operated, and he was very pleasant and helpful.

Stayed here over the weekend for some biking and hiking. The room was clean and pretty and well appointed, with a little fridge, microwave, toaster and coffee maker. The owner was very nice to us and I believe the price was better than many in the area. The location was super, walk or bike to everything.

We have just returned from another wonderful (but too short) stay at the Sara Placid Motel. This motel is bar far one of the best that we have stayed in and we travel quite a bit. The service is outstanding. Steve is a great host and always aims to please. His rooms are the cleanest around with beautiful beds and decor. Every year that we stay there we find upgrades including Flat Screen TV's and extremely comfortable mattresses. The Sara Placid has a room for everyone from a basic room with amenities such as refrigerators, microwave ovens, and coffee makers to rooms with kitchenettes and fully equiped apartments as well as two beautiful homes to rent on beautiful Lake Flower along with docks if you bring your own boat. We can't say enough good things about the Sara Placid and we highly recommend this motel to anyone traveling to the Saranac Lake/Lake Placid area. The location is wonderful. There is a nice restaurant next door that has great breakfasts and our favorite Mexican restaurant is within a short walk. Lake Placid is just 10 minutes down the road. Do yourself a favor and try the Sara Placid the next time you are in the area. You won't be sorry. Then like me and my husband you will want to tell all your friends what a great place this is to stay!

This is a great value in a pricey little town in an excellent location. The manager/owner was pleasant and helpful. The room was very typical, the bathroom tiny, but it had everything one needed for a night on the road.

This place was our last resort as we did not have any reservations and did not want to stay in Lake Placid as prices were sky high!!!. We took the last two rooms. They were pretty big and it had a kitchenette and a flat screen TV. We had room 10. The place was clean but the walls are thin. All in all, it was across the street from a lake and right smack next door to a great breakfast place. Forgot the name, but will find out. I would recommend this place for its value and cleaniness, I guess I am just spoiled. LOL

We stayed here 4 nights in late August. Host Steve was very welcoming and full of helpful info and solicitous of our comfort and sought feedback about our stay and whether there was anything he could/should do to improve. (How often does that happen?!) We had one of 1-bedroom apartments. The sitting room was very comfortable; the kitchen had all appliances in good working order and was stocked with all the pots, pans, cutlery, utensils, dishware you could reasonably need. The bed was incredibly comfortable and pillows were good. Bathroom had plenty of hot water and streaming water pressure. The grounds are attractive with plenty of outdoor seating and offered gas grill for guest use. Saranac Lake is a quiet town but worth ambling through for an afternoon and/or evening. We liked its location as well-positioned to shoot over to the Paul Smiths area for canoe outings, or over to Lake Placid (too touristy for our taste) to get up into the mountains for more strenuous hiking or skiing. Very pleasant stay. Highly recommend!

My partner, parents and myself stayed here for just one night in June 2009 as the third leg of our 22-day ‘Grand East Coast Tour’.

It was a stop-over to break up the long journey between our previous location in North Woodstock, NH and our next destination – Toronto. We wanted to stay somewhere in or around Lake Placid, and this seemed the best option in an otherwise quite expensive area.

Since we were four adults, we booked their two bedroom suite, which was a motel-like room with two queen beds in the first part of the unit, and another queen bed in the second part at the back. The main room had a fridge, microwave, large flatscreen TV, table and four chairs, air conditioning and ceiling fans. The second room didn’t have much other than the bed and a small bedside table, and the door to the bathroom. The beds were very comfortable.

There were a few cobwebs behind the bedroom door and around the light fittings. Since the main door led directly out to the lawn and car park area, we found that a couple of mosquitoes got into the room, as did ants which we found a number of times walking the floor or beds. Some of that was probably our fault, however, for leaving the light on inside and leaving the front door open for a short while as we brought our luggage inside. It made me scratch a little, but that was all.

The lawn out front led to a small extension of the main lake. The lake and grounds looked pretty, especially at night, but the gazebo was so full of cobwebs, spiders and flies that you wouldn’t want to sit there until it was properly cleaned. There was a pedal boat available, but at the time it was wet and dirty so we didn’t give it a go.

There was some noise from the people walking upstairs and next door. The walls seemed quite thin, since we could hear next door’s comings and goings and showers.

Just the other side of the pond was a café called McKenzies which was recommended to us by the Inkeeper for breakfast. We agree that this was a good option to start the day.

Apparently, the Inn had free WiFi connectivity but we couldn’t get a working signal.

All in all, we only wanted a place to stop over for a night, and we had little to complain about. If we wanted to stay for a longer period in the area, we would probably look at Lake Placid itself in more depth. Although the town of Lake Saranac, which we looked round for a while and sat by the lake, was quite delightful there didn’t seem much going on for tourists.

We paid $145 plus tax for the night, which did not include breakfast. We thought this was a little high, but it was still the cheapest option we could find. If you’re looking for somewhere in the area, and Lake Placid is either too expensive or full up, you could certainly do worse than stay at Sara-Placid Motor Inn.
