The Grouse House Bed and Breakfast
Ranked #8 of 16 Saugerties B&B and Inns
Reviewed 13 July 2014

We LOVED our stay! You are the only guests and have an oasis with a hot tub, incredible views, an outdoor shower, etc! The accommodations were so wonderful and we truly did not want to leave. The breakfasts were an extra treat! The owner Gilbert is such a warm and friendly person. He has built a squirrel haven and it was so fun to watch the squirrels every morning. We slept so well every night! Sad to leave but we will be back!

We stayed in the Grouse House, just outside Saugerties, for the second time in March 2014. The second time was just as nice as the first. I'm baffled that the GH rates only 7th among B&Bs and Inns in Saugerties. I can only assume that's because it's competing against inns, which are a bit more full-service than true B&Bs. Which hardly seems fair.

There is only one room at the Grouse House, but it's spectacular, with cathedral ceilings, a huge king feather bed, a private jacuzzi tub with shower, and a little kitchenette with a mini-fridge stocked daily with OJ, milk, fruits and pastries by the owner, a microwave-toaster, a sink, coffee machine, and a sitting area. There is a private deck attached to the room with a bar-like sitting area and a swing sofa so you can observe the sun moving slowly over the mountains in the distance.. You'll have access to a hot tub one level below, from which (if you're lucky like us), you can watch deer coming to nibble the corn that the owner puts out for them. Finally, from the room itself you can observe a sort of paradise for birds and squirrels -- a very unique "jungle gym" of feeders, rope lines, whilry-gigs and other devices that the squirrels and birds play on and with.

The owner, Gilbert, is a genuinely warm, genuinely interesting person. He'll chat as long or as little as you're comfortable with, but we'd definitely advise talking with him for a while during your stay. He has great stories and a wealth of experience to share. He's also incredibly gracious, always ready to offer a suggestion to make your stay more comfortable.

The GH is located basically between Saugerties and Woodstock, so it's an ideal location for exploring those two lovely Catskills towns.

GH is a B&B, run by an individual owner from his home. It's not an Inn. So if you're expecting to find, say, a full breakfast served up in the morning and maids at your beck and call, you'll be disappointed. But if you're looking for a genuinely unique, incredibly relaxing place to explore the Catskills, you couldn't ask for anything finer than the Grouse House. We'll be back!

My husband and I went for a long weekend. I couldn't believe the view of Overlook Mountain. The host is very helpful and he left all kinds of literature so that you could easily find your way around the area. We hiked up to Kaaterskill Falls, admired Opus 40, and just enjoyed watching the birds and squirrels at all the feeders on the Grouse House grounds. Oh, and by the way, the Saugerties area in general has some amazing places to eat! I guess I should add that the room itself was beautiful and had everything you needed.

I just booked Grouse House with my boyfriend last weekend to get away from the city for a little. The drive was the perfect distance that it was far enough away removed that we truly enjoyed being away from the bustling city but it was not too far where it was a burden. From the start Gilbert was amazing! He welcomed us and showed us around and pretty much left us alone all weekend to enjoy the hot tub, deer watching, squirrel watching, etc. just the two of us (:

The value of the place is amazing as you two will be completely alone and will really unwind! We were lucky there was availability due to the short notice but I would recommend really booking in advance. AMAZING trip!

We couldn’t believe our eyes when we pulled up to the Grouse House/Penthouse, our weekend retreat! The Penthouse Suite provides complete privacy (with private entrance by spiral staircase). Here you can escape to one of 3 very private decks; the main/lowest deck is where you will find the outdoor hot tub and shower with small sitting area and porch swing. Up a small flight of wooden stairs to the middle/2nd level you have BBQ and the most entertaining squirrels you’ve ever seen! Then make your way up the final spiral stairway to the 3rd level where you have yet another private deck and entrance to the suite. The suite itself has a great king bed, Cathedral ceiling with ceiling fan, in-suite Jacuzzi tub and kitchenette! The kitchenette and self-serve breakfast is stocked with juice, muffins, fruit and coffee!

The private upper most deck has the most amazing views of the mountains and provides the tranquil setting to relax and enjoy all the beauty that surrounds you. In addition, Gilbert (the homeowner) has created a very unique “gym” area for the birds and squirrel to romp and play! Watch as the squirrels play in this amazing setting. Between the majestic views and entertainment of bird / squirrel watching you can easily loose track of time.

Gilbert is “wonderful,” he offers EVERYTHING you could need and then some! We completely enjoyed spending time chatting with him and hear about Ursa. Oh, didn’t I mention Ursa, she is the local bear that frequents the property on a pretty regular basis. She didn’t stop by (that we know of) while we were there but Gilbert has video of her attempting to climb the trees where the many bird feeders and the squirrel’s gym is located. Watch as Gilbert calmly tells her to get down and leave the feeders and be on her way. along--a pleasure to chat with and
