“You cannot beat the location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 August 2013

My wife and I "discovered" Skaneateles when my daughter began college at Syracuse University 2 years ago. Always wanted to stay at the Sherwood - fully service hotel built in 1807. Each room is individually decorated and uniquely sized. We found it very clean with an attentive staff. Breakfast is free and the selection was very good. But you cannot beat the location - it's just wonderful to walk out the door and be able to cross the street and enjoy the lakeside park. The quaint town shops are also an easy walk. I like to swim and the town park allows swimming. Water temp is a bit cold but he lake water is clear 50 feet and is the unfiltered drinking water for Syracuse. Very upscale town. Loved the Sherwood. One negative mention - while you really need to check out the restaurant, my dinner was served cold. Wait staff was very friendly and made amends.

we stayed and ate at the Sherwood inn in august when visiting friends in the area. the king room we had was nice enough, the bed comfortable and the air conditioning adequate, though for the price I don't expect the wallpaper to be peeling off the walls in the bathroom. the jetted tub was yellowed and old looking.

the meal was just average. I ordered the creamed spinach and literally got a side of spinach in a bowl of cream. no seasoning. nothing. the fillet was cooked properly and the scallops were delicious. my wife had the pork chop, which was very good, but served over a bed of greens so heavily doused in vinegar that it was nearly inedible. the service was about average.

the breakfast was poor. flies were buzzing around the food and they had nothing more than some browned potatoes, plain scrambled eggs with a bowl of katsup, and a few pastries. I suffered intestinal distress not long after eating breakfast and I have a cast iron constitution.

The village is great, however, this inn is dated even for quaint. The room was awful. The wall paper is as old as the inn and falling. The air conditioning in the window is in the sitting room and not the bedroom. The light in the sitting room did not work. When turning on the water in the bathroom the water came out rusty. The bed is also from the 1800's. The mattress was so old you fell into the middle and very lumpy.

The restaurant was not any better. Service was terrible and the food was sub par. The staff in the restaurant treated us like we were out of our league. You could definitely tell who the locals were by the way they were treated.

This was a gift for our wedding for our first night as a married couple. I was very disappointed and will never go there again.

Room Tip: Don't bother with this place. For the money stay at Mirabeau.

Just got back from a two night weekend stay at the Sherwood Inn with 4 couples. We were attending the semi-final round of the PGA tournament in Pittsford, NY, but wanted to stay somewhere on a lake, a little east of the tournament, since we would be heading back to Massachusetts. We couldn't have been happier. What a location ! You can sit on the porch to have dinner, breakfast, or lunch and look out at the beautiful lake. We took a boat trip $12 per/person around the lake at 5:00, just before our dinner reservation at 6:30, and it was so enjoyable.

The hotel itself is very old, but so charming. If you want modern, go to an Element or Aloft, but you'll miss out on the charm. Everything was clean, may be a little bit worn in some areas, but what would you expect from an older hotel? The town was so cute, easily walkable, with beautiful parks and homes just a short walk away. The Patisserie just in back of the hotel reminded me of Paris, surrounded by flowers with nice chairs and tables to have your coffee and pastry. We brought bed and pastry home with us - it was yummy !

All eight of us enjoyed our stay so much that we said we would definitely consider coming back. Had dinner at Rosalie's one night (you have to go !) and in the hotel pub the other night, as we were very tired from being at the golf tournament all day. We loved both.

Don't hesitate to stay here.

Room Tip: Looked at all the rooms - all very charming, but some a little bigger. Overall, most are small, so...

We could have really enjoyed this meal, but the snooty staff really brought down the experience.
The Friday raw bar is delicious, pricey but delicious.. The hostess was very unfriendly, when seating us, even though there were many open tables, she sat us directly across from the waiter station. When I asked if we could get a better table, she shook her head and took us to a table in the back of the restaurant, slapped our menus down and walked off. I'm guessing this was do to our very casual attire, and some dreadlocks, but who knows.. The menu price for our raw bar sampler, changed apparently during our meal. Because when the waitress brought our bill at the end of the meal, she informed us that prices had went up .. Wth ???
So if you can get past the suddenly changing prices and unfriendly staff, you might very well enjoy your meal.

Have made many trips to the Sherwood Inn over the years and have never, ever been disappointed. Although I have seen a couple of bad reviews, my wife and I cannot for the life of us fathom what these individuals found to complain about. Yes the Inn is very old, but it is well taken care of and the rooms are beautiful and well maintained. As for the restaurant, it is excellent. The wait staff is very efficient and courteous at all times. We have sampled many of the items on the menu and never has anything been anything but excellent. If you are seated in the front you will have a beautiful view down the lake. We especially like the sun porch when the weather is warm enough to open the windows for some fresh lake air. After eating you can stroll the main street shops or sit on a bench and enjoy the lake. All in all, it's just a great place to spend a day or two.

Room Tip: All the rooms are nice but the ones on the front side are nicer because of the lake view.

Actually this time we went to the Blue Water Grill and it was fabulous. Ought on the lake in the village. Loved the carpaccio and the lobster/crab sandwich. It was busy and if you wanted a quiet spot this isn't your place but I like the hustle of the summer. Service was also very good. Well worth the visit!

Room Tip: You are in the heart of the village so you can shop and browse without any effort. Wish that the boa...
