My sister and I stayed at the Mainstay, booking three nights in the only room with twin beds. The room is not airconditioned, shares a bath, and costs $195 per night. We only stayed one night, however, since the extremely small, twin-bedded room had so little ventilation that on this very hot, humid night we could not sleep one wink. The two small (!) windows at the head of the beds faced on the street with very, very loud truck traffic, and the room had no cross ventilation. The fan merely blew whatever air there was back out the window. The shared bath was barely adequate, with not even a place to put the soap in the small shower area.
That said, the B&B is lovely, and beautifully decorated. The pool area is gorgeous and peaceful, and the breakfast was very, very nice. A congenial conversation with other guests at breakfast was the highlight of our abbreviated stay. And we found two cotton robes in the closet for our use ... a nice touch.
If the room we had was airconditioned, it would have made all the difference, both with the temperature (in our room, I'm sure it never went below 80 all night long) and the traffic noise. An offer to move us to an airconditioned room would have been accepted, and would have been expected in any other establishment because of the extreme heat in that room. However, it was not offered. All in all, we really did not feel welcomed at all by the Mainstay.
One additional caveat ... The Mainstay says that it is in the "heart of Southampton". Be aware that it is NOT in the heart of the village. It in fact is one and a half miles away from anything in the village, with much of that distance having no sidewalk. If you plan on walking to the village for dinner with drinks, know that it's not an easy walk back in the dark and is in fact dangerous.
