“Weekend away”
Reviewed 23 April 2013

We stayed in the Iris room with our 9 and 10 year old. The innkeeper, Hallie, greeted us with cookies and snacks and gave us a tour of the original house. The king bed was too cozy to get out of in the morning and I even tried the pull-out mattress with a brief nap and that was good too. They are converting a loft into a bar. We had breakfast in a large dining room. Breakfast vegetable quiche, citrus-berry oatmeal. We originally chose this inn because we were coming back from a MTB race at Lippman Park. Lunch was on the patio and included an apple-gorgonzola salad and chicken alfredo pasta. The Iris room was a little chilly but the electric fireplace took care of that as well as the cozy bed. We would have liked a sitting room to relax outside our room. The dining room was quickly transformed for our lunch and would suggest that it could be easily done that way for a sitting room and back too.

My husband and I did not stay here but had a private dining experience celebrating our anniversary. It was amazing. Chef Mark and his team prepared a special tasting menu just for us. We had 8 courses, all were fantastic. Our favorites: date wrapped in bacon with goat cheese, pureed soups of beet, roasted yellow tomatoes, butternut squash, chopped salad with Gorgonzola cheese, walnuts and granny smith apples, chicken made with apple cider, onions and carrots and pan seared salmon and tuna. Mark is a passionate, laid back, super talented, local chef that really is a pleasure to have wait on you. He presented each meal to us, climbing the stairs each time up and down from his basement kitchen. We also enjoyed local gin, wines and warm apple cider with spiced rum. It was a special meal cooked by a special man and we loved it. It was a truly memorable evening.

This b & b is fairly new, having been opened in February of this year. It is in a house close to busy and noisy RT 209 outside of Stoneridge. Mark has converted the basement into a commercial kitchen (he is an experienced local chef) and his concentration is on serving food to larger groups. Hence, in my view, the culinary dog wags the B&B tail. We stayed in the carriage house, a second floor open space with a king and queen bed, separated by curtains. The bathroom walls do not go to the high ceiling so there is little privacy. The furniture is a hodgepodge of mismatched styles--old attic except for the beds which are attractive. Heat in the carriage house is controlled from the space below so guests are at the mercy of the resident of the lower floor. One corner of the upper space is also use for storage. Cobwebs abound--cleanliness is not a high priority. Finally, the water pressure in the shower is so poor that water literally dribbles out of the spout. The carriage house is incredibly over priced for what it has to offer. I can't speak to the rooms in the main house, but I will not stay there again.

We stayed in the Carriage house - which needs a few tweaks but the meals/food made up for it.
Every meal DIVINE and inspired.
The grounds are beautiful and the staff (Hallie) are amazing!!!!

We stayed the first weekend the newly renovated Inn opened and it was Fabulous! The room was beautiful and luxurious. I loved the poster bed! Chef Mark was so accommodating, his suggestions for hiking were perfect and his gourmet breakfast was so delicious and filling that we skipped lunch entirely. We will definitely be back!

I wanted to like SparrowHake Affaires, but it ended up being a horrible stay. To be fair, we stayed in the carriage house, so maybe the main house is better. There were FLIES everywhere in the carriage house. I'd say at least 20 hovering around each window. There were also dead flies all over the ground -- my guess is they had sprayed the room earlier (maybe that was the odd smell?), and this is truly the meaning of "dropping like flies." You had to look out for dead flies on the carpet everywhere you walked. I also couldn't sleep because the flies were buzzing so loudly.

The breakfast was quite good, and it was served in the main house. "Mom" takes your orders and it's a nice breakfast buffet.

All in all, just couldn't justify spending $200/night in a fly-infested room. The rooms (without the flies) are nice enough, but not worth the price.

Please do not judge our Inn on this review of the previous owner, Sparrowhawk B&B. We are new owners and have completely renovated the entire Inn and property. It is spotless and meticulously maintained!!

we have been to many bed and breakfasts and have not repeated too many because we like to try new ones. sparrowhawk might just be on our list of repeat visits. the hostess was wonderful, the room we had was large and romantic and the breakfasts were out of this world. we didn't have to eat until 7 at night after breakfast. while we were there, mom suggested that we call our friend in the next town to join us for breakfast. we didn't because we had other plans, but what a warm touch and generous spirit. we would remember this for a future visit. the inn is located on rt 209, halfway (15-20 minutes to each) berween new paltz and kingston. a convenient location off the beaten track. the jacuzzi ion the room was welcomed and they have a 2 person jacuzzi in a separate room if you want it.in the hallway right outside the rooms are a refrigerator, wine glasses, ice, water and microwave. there is a mini-bar as well in the living room. we were refreshed after a 2 night stay and would recommend this place to our friends and family. it would be a great place for a wedding. check out their website and pictures.
