Description: Originally known as Phoebe's Garden Cafe, the restaurant has a long and colorful history in Syracuse. Local lore claims that the building was originally a brothel, and Phoebe was its madam. The tin ceiling above the bar is original to the building and the name still honors Phoebe, but much has changed since those early days. William Eberhardt opened Phoebe's Garden Cafe in December of 1976 with a bistro style menu and an ornately carved wood bar.The atmosphere was rich with red brick walls, and deep green upholstery, all surrounded by lush green plants. The large atrium dining room was added in 1985, increasing seating and opening up the entire restaurant with a sunny new skylight. In the summer of 2004, Phoebe's experienced a refreshing makeover with a bright new look in the atrium dining room with fresh paint, new upholstery, and artwork. The bar and cafe areas were softened with cool linen window treatments and warm shades of burgundy and cream. The coffee lounge also opened that year, and it became an instant hit with the surrounding university and business crowd. Those changes also warranted a new name to reflect the updated attitude and ambiance: Phoebe's Restaurant and Coffee Lounge. Classic elements of Phoebe's remain untouched-the French onion soup and enticing creme brulee. The lunch and dinner menu changes seasonally and includes many locally-sourced ingredients. Looking for more of a quick bite on the go? The Coffee Lounge serves as a take-out window for breakfast sandwiches, lunch, and dinner, in addition to all of the made-to-order coffee and espresso drinks. The Lounge also has its own seating area and free wireless internet capabilities. Phoebe's old world charm is right at home in a revitalized area of the city. Located on the Connective Corridor on East Genesee Street across from Syracuse Stage and near Syracuse University, Phoebe's is a favorite stop for theater goers. Phoebe's also offers private dining facilities with custom menus to suit. We invite you to join us-and make Phoebe's your new favorite place.

“A comfortable place in Syracuse”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 September 2013

This is a very comfortable, welcoming place. Everyone is very enthusiastic and genuine. The cocktails are fairly priced and well made. There is a large selection of beers on tap and a good selection of wines by the glass. The daily soup was excellent and served with great bread and a compound butter. I had the pork loin which was plated nicely and very good. There is a nice, lively crowd. The place is not overwhelmed with annoying televisions. This place is within walking distance of the Crowne Plaza hotel. Avoid that restaurant at all costs.

“A nice restaurant for CNY - just what you'd expect”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 July 2013 via mobile

Phoebes is a fancy place to go for dinner in Syracuse - pricy for above average but not quite worth it food. It's a timepiece and is fun to people watch and you will by no means go hungry. That being said, there are dozens of more interesting and hip restaurants these days in Cuse. If you're looking for an old fashioned fancy place, this is your bet.

“good place for business lunches”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 1 July 2013

I was looking for a nice downtown restaurant for business lunches and a friend suggested Phoebe's. My client's place is close to Phoebe's so we went ... very nice atmosphere and good food. It isn't noisy and you can hold a conversation, that's important to me, as well. I'll be happy to go back.

“A dining gem in Syracuse”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 May 2013

While traveling out of town for business at the court house, my colleagues and I ate here every night. The atmosphere is casual and inviting. My favorites on the menu were the corn chowder soup and the stirfry. This is a fun local place (recommended to me by my cab driver) and it's consistently reliable for good service, food, and atmosphere.

“Better than I remembered”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 April 2013

Visited last friday for dinner and the food and service were excellent. Last time I was here, maybe a couple of years ago it wasn't that great, but glad I tried it again! We had a table on the "old" porch section with a view of the street - great for people watching. Had caesar salad, nice and fresh with a light lemony dressing, followed by the skirt steak entree which arrived perfeclty medium rare. My friend had a arugula salad and the scallops with fresh spinach, also excellent. Wine prices were reasonable, and a pretty good list but could use some French choices, try a Cote du Rhone, people!! Waitress was attentive and went over specials well.
