Description: Originally known as Phoebe's Garden Cafe, the restaurant has a long and colorful history in Syracuse. Local lore claims that the building was originally a brothel, and Phoebe was its madam. The tin ceiling above the bar is original to the building and the name still honors Phoebe, but much has changed since those early days. William Eberhardt opened Phoebe's Garden Cafe in December of 1976 with a bistro style menu and an ornately carved wood bar.The atmosphere was rich with red brick walls, and deep green upholstery, all surrounded by lush green plants. The large atrium dining room was added in 1985, increasing seating and opening up the entire restaurant with a sunny new skylight. In the summer of 2004, Phoebe's experienced a refreshing makeover with a bright new look in the atrium dining room with fresh paint, new upholstery, and artwork. The bar and cafe areas were softened with cool linen window treatments and warm shades of burgundy and cream. The coffee lounge also opened that year, and it became an instant hit with the surrounding university and business crowd. Those changes also warranted a new name to reflect the updated attitude and ambiance: Phoebe's Restaurant and Coffee Lounge. Classic elements of Phoebe's remain untouched-the French onion soup and enticing creme brulee. The lunch and dinner menu changes seasonally and includes many locally-sourced ingredients. Looking for more of a quick bite on the go? The Coffee Lounge serves as a take-out window for breakfast sandwiches, lunch, and dinner, in addition to all of the made-to-order coffee and espresso drinks. The Lounge also has its own seating area and free wireless internet capabilities. Phoebe's old world charm is right at home in a revitalized area of the city. Located on the Connective Corridor on East Genesee Street across from Syracuse Stage and near Syracuse University, Phoebe's is a favorite stop for theater goers. Phoebe's also offers private dining facilities with custom menus to suit. We invite you to join us-and make Phoebe's your new favorite place.

“A gem!”
Reviewed 2 March 2014

First time in Phoebes. Attended a shower in the main dining area. It looks like nothing much on the outside but on the inside it is was elegant, eclectic, and homey all in one. Plenty of room for everyone plus gifts. The buffet was also elegant, eclectic and homey....delicious. Definitely coming back to dine when in the area again.

“Reminded why this has always been a favorite”
Reviewed 30 January 2014

Went to Phoebes before a show last night and it just started out a great evening just right. I was quickly reminded of why this has always been one of my favorite local places. It is beautiful welcoming and very comfortable.
The food was amazing. They were serving half portions last night which was a great option especially if you wanted to save room for dessert....which of course we did have at the end of our delicious meal.
Both my friend and I had the sirloin steak with mashed potatoes and green beans....yum yum yum....a fine glass of Chardonnay and chocolate flower less cake for dessert with piping hot coffee what else could you ask for. Of yes a good server....ours was wonderful, very informative friendly and attentive.
Did I say it was a favorite??

“Excellent meal in Syracuse”
Reviewed 5 January 2014

My wife and I recently went on a little trip to Syracuse after New Year's and were staying at a downtown hotel. We had discovered Phoebe's a few years ago and wanted to go back. Our last experience was amazing and we had hoped it would be again. Phoebe's did not disappoint. We startrd with the beef carpaccio which was very good and plenty to share for two. Next I had the Cedar plank Pork Tenderloin with curried green tomato relish. This was very good, with a heavy smoke flavour and relish went very well with the pork. My wife had the pan roaster lemon sole and it was excellent. The wine selection is very nice and not expensive at all. The decor of the restaurant is very warm and inviting (as if sitting inside someone's dining room in thier home). The staff is very friendly and helpful. We will definitely return to Phoebe's.

“Good drinks”
Reviewed 23 October 2013

We only had beer and appetizers here. The beer selection was good but the calamari portion was skimpy and could have been crispier. Enjoyed the old fashioned vibe of the bar area, doesn't feel like a student hang out.
