“Great conference hotel”
Reviewed 8 November 2012

A cozy hide-away near the Hudson River. Beautiful surroundings and excellent facilities. Wonderful food. Clean, inviting rooms and a wonderful bed that made for excellent sleep! I was here for a training course during Hurricane Sandy. You really see what a team and a hotel is like during a crisis, and I am amazed at the service I experienced despite the fact that staff were probably worried about their own homes and families during the storm. Everyone was very attentive and did their very best to make guests feel welcome despite power outages etc. I can highly recommend this hotel.

We stayed here for a weekend in October. We were able to set up some fun Halloween activities while we were there. The grounds are beautiful with and awesome view. The staff was friendly and helpful. The restaurant, Cellar 49 had great food. The location is great too. You are only a few miles away from all of the sites in Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow. I would highly suggest this hotel. My husband and I had a blast.

Dear Jeannine J:

Thank you for taking the time to share your October Halloween stay with our fans on TA.

October is also our favorite month as Halloween has been taken to an "Art" form here in the Village which as you know is the home for the "Legend of Sleepy Hollow".

I am so glad you and your family enjoyed the Estate and the area activities. We look forward to welcoming you back soon!

Best wishes for a safe, happy and healthy holiday and New Year.

We recently had an overnight stay at the Tarrytown House! Beautiful surroundings, extremely clean rooms! Very friendly and pleasant staff! We had an unbelievable breakfast in the mansion. I would highly recommend the Tarrytown House. It is in the heart of Sleepy Hollow territory...so much to do there!

Our family spent Saturday night at Tarrytown House while visiting local attractions (including the Jack o’Lantern Blaze at Van Cortlandt Manor). While, we all know that price is determined by the booking levels, scarcity, blah, blah, blah, so clearly other forces were at work here, we were underwhelmed by Tarrytown House. The grounds were spacious but not landscaped in any special way. The hotel was rambling and even the historic parts have been remodeled into blandness. Our room was a “hobbit cave,” a low ceilinged English basement with grass growing right up to the window and plenty of creeping damp to make noses run. Décor was less busy than others have described, tan and jade updates to an 80’s teal base and ye olde colonial style faux cherry furniture. Décor was not what I would look for but perfectly fine. There was a rubber sheet on the bed making for a sweaty and uncomfortable night. If we had paid about a hundred less then I would have felt content. For what we paid, I don’t think moldy acoustic ceiling tiles cut it.
If you are staying at Tarrytown House for a wedding or conference, you’ll be fine, as your visit isn’t really about the decor. If you are using the hotel as a base for local tourism, like us, I’d suggest that you try one of the big brands in town – Marriott, Doubletree, Sheraton. I’ve never been to any of them but I’m guessing the décor, level of wear-and-tear and comfort will be about the same and you have a better chance of paying a fair price. If you are going for an anniversary or romantic getaway and your trip is about the room, I’m not sure how to advise you but I definitely would not stay here.

Dear Smitwin:

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and opinions with our TA community.

With 12 buildings dating from 1840 - 2001 spread across 26 acres, the Estate can be daunting. When the designers restored all 212 guest rooms, mansions and recreational buildings they did stay disciplined to the period color palates of the time. I am sorry the design and color palate were not to your personal preferences. Rest assured all guest rooms feature new pillow top mattresses and bedding, flat screen high definition TV's, custom Mahogany furniture, electronic safes and of course complimentary HSIA throughout all areas of the Estate.

The gardens however are meticulously landscaped and reflect the statuary, fountains and stone-work indicative of how Mary Duke originally envisioned them almost a century ago.

Hopefully when your travels take you back through our historic area you will reconsider and elect to make Tarrytown House your home away from home.

Disappointed upon arrival with a large wedding crowd filling the small lobby area. Three wedding parties with gift bags on large tables. Chaos, no ambiance for our anniversary getaway. Room equivalent to a Days Inn or the like. If we were paying half the price, maybe ok....

Dear CTLuxurySeeker:

Thank you for sharing your opinions and we are sorry you did not enjoy the Estate to its' fullest advantage.

Although we are recognized as the Nation's First Executive Conference Center, the Estate formerly owned by Mary Duke of the Duke Tobacco family of Durham North Carolina offers so much for weekend life events like weddings and bar mitzvahs as well as romantic weekend escapes.

For future reference the oldest Mansion at the Estate is our King Mansion and dates to 1840, this incredible Georgian Colonial has 10 period bedrooms all furnished with original antiques and some have large private verandahs overlooking the Hudson River. This may be the room type and suite you were looking for.

Although every weekend tends to be busy with both weddings and conferences, we do hope you reconsider when your travels take you back to the Lower Hudson Valley.

My wife & I stayed at Tarrytown House for a night during a quick trip to Westchester County. Our room was on the 3rd Floor of Putnam. We were very happy with all aspects of our visit. No surprise, since we had stayed here 2 or 3 times years ago & had similar experience.
