“A Nice Stay”
Reviewed 4 August 2013

We recently stayed at Van Auken's Inne during a trip to Old Forge to start wedding planning. It was really old and charming. Our room was clean and welcoming. The beds were very comfortable. Yes, Van Auken's is OLD but that's part of the charm. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful, even recommending locations that we might want to investigate for the reception.

I would say that if you are a light sleeper or concerned about noise, you might want to book a room over the dining room instead of the bar area. (Lower numbers.) We certainly were not, so it did not matter much to us.

Definitely worth looking into for a stay. We most certainly will return!

Room Tip: Choose a lower number room over the dining room if you'd like a quieter room.

When arriving I was pleasantly surprised by what we found. Judging by the other reviews of course. This is a rustic inn, built in 1891, what more would you expect! Large front porch for sitting and enjoying the view! The rooms are a little dated, however for the age of the Inn I think that they are just lovely, bed was comfy, plenty of room, bathrooms were large! The staff was wonderful, the surroundings are great. We stayed for a weekend for a wedding and of course site seeing with the friends. The scenic train station is across the street, but you wouldn't know it, not noisy at all. As for the food I cannot attest, but what I can attest to is that the crowd we brought on a Friday night, probably tripling their normal crowd the staff in the bar did amazing. We are planning another trip to Old Forge very soon and will most likely be staying right at Van Aukens! We loved it.

Room Tip: The king room has a balcony! and be sure to take the train ride!!!!

Booked here last minute, for the price its not bad. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Ate lunch at the bar and the food was average for bar food. Its an old building so if you are looking for something modern don't go here. It was clean and comfy. The bar is below you so you hear the noise from it which doesn't really bother my wife or myself. Heading up to the rooms you get a slight musty smell. Too sum it up it's clean, friendly and comfortable but old. We would stay again if we go back to the Old Forge area.

Room Tip: The lower number rooms are over the dining room so they would probably be quieter than over the bar...

We were on a cross-country motorcycle trip from Michigan to Maine and this was the much-anticipated last stop on our journey before heading home. My husband had worked for months on this trip and had spoken with the Inne and we were really excited about staying in such a historic old building. They really hyped up their Thursday night seafood dinner and entertainment on the porch so we added a 2nd night to our stay so we could be there for that. They touted that the town shuts down and they close off the road and everyone sits around the Inne to listen to the music and have this fabulous food on the porch. However, everything about this Inne was a disappointment. At check-in the people were not friendly. They spoke only when asked a specific question, they didn't offer any information - we even had to ask how to get to our rooms!

This building has so much potential and could be absolutely fabulous, however the pictures they show on their website are a far cry from how it appears today. Their website says it was remodeled in the 80s and it looks as though nothing has been done since. They did have a couple of guys working on a room painting but the place needed much more than paint. You couldn't open a window in the bedrooms because the screens were full of huge tears and rips. There were no fans so there was no way to air out the rooms. There were cobwebs everywhere in the rooms and down in the dining room. Our friend’s room had such a pitch to the floor in their bedroom that they thought they would roll out of bed in the middle of the night. The toilets bubbled up every time you flushed and in our friends room it literally bubbled over the top of the toilet every time - disgusting! The door you had to go through to get to the bedrooms sounded like the basement door on the Adams Family! It squeaked so loud that you always knew when someone was coming into the bedroom area. It did make us laugh every time we went through the door and someone on the staff must have noticed us making fun of it because the next day when we got back from a day in Old Forge, it appeared that they had tried to shave off some of the bottom of the door (while it was still on the hinges) and they had left the shavings on the floor. It didn't squeak quite as bad but still made noise.

It does have the bar and we ate there the first night and the food was ok but the service was terrible! It took a very long time to get our food and the waitress acted like it was a huge inconvenience to split the check and you couldn't put the tab on your room. No one on the staff was friendly at all.

The Seafood and Entertainment on the porch was also a huge disappointment! The entertainment portion was actually very good but unfortunately we got the same waitress that night as the previous night. She handed us their special menus but when we asked what came with the main entrees (all the menu said was "tuna", "lobster", etc... she told us "nothing"... you order tuna and you get tuna. I thought she was joking but she wasn't and she turned around and walked away. We stopped another waitress who seemed much more knowledgeable and friendly and she explained that you got a small ear of corn with the entrees but you could add other sides at an additional cost. At this point we had just had enough. We finished our drinks and left. We walked down the road and had one of our best meals of the entire 2-week trip at the Steakhouse down the road.

We came back and sat in the lawn chairs and listened to the music but didn't eat at the Inne. And the comment that they shut down the road and the whole town comes out for this evening - quite an embellishment. The road is a small drive that is between the Inne and the railroad station - no grass just pavement and there is no "town" to speak of anywhere around.

They had coffee, juice, boxes of cereal and bagels set out in the mornings but we never saw a staff person. Everything was just set on the table and if you needed anything else you were just out of luck.

Again, this place has enormous potential and if the staff had at least been friendly and inviting we would have had an entirely different impression but that on top of everything else just left us extremely disappointed. We would not recommend this place to anyone and wish that we had picked a different place in Old Forge to stay.

Room Tip: Room #5 is the one we know of with major plumbing issues and a big slant in the floor.
