“Excellent step back in history!”
Reviewed 23 August 2014 via mobile

Two visits and two satisfied experiences! Delicious food with a welcoming atmosphere. Bread pudding is FANTASTIC!! Menu maybe limited but this helps with the items being made fresh to order-even satisfied our 13 year old! Thanks for bringing to life this historical relaxing location.

“Wonderful!”
Reviewed 22 August 2014

Great tavern with delicious, fresh food and reasonable prices! Friendly service. Had the daily specials and it was some of the best food I've had at a restaurant. Be sure to get the bread pudding - even if you don't think you like bread pudding you will like it! I hope I'm driving through NY again and can stop at Gerber's.

“Great spot for you and your spouse!”
Reviewed 20 August 2014

If you are looking for a fantastic spot for you and your spouse or another couple. Gerbers Tavern is the place to be. Quaint pub with amazing atmosphere. Where you can actually enjoy each others company. Not a loud bar or resturaunt that's looking to get you in and out. Quality food, simple menu with daily specials. And the drink prices are on par as well. If your looking for a good meal and good times. Try Gerbers Tavern you won't be disappointed.

“Come For the Story, Come Back For the Food”
Reviewed 16 August 2014

Whether you're a history buff, a foodie or a Utica native, this is one place you should visit while you can. The story behind the restaurant and the building itself is worth the trip. And the food is nothing to sneeze at either.

Gerber's was a local pub and later speak-easy in what used to be the vibrant, architecturally interesting and politically important downtown section of Utica. This same neighborhood has faced decline and urban blight for decades but is inhaling its first tiny breath of revitalization.

They shut the doors on Gerber's Tavern in the 1950s and the romantic story is that the new owner bought the building, dusted off the tables, resurrected the menu and opened the doors without a single change. The real story involves a little bit more work, restoring some architectural elements, reinforcing the crumbling foundation and bringing the place up to code. But in doing so, he tried to keep to the original spirit of the times and soul of the rooms.

When you enter, you'll find yourself stepping into a black and white, pre-prohibition photograph that has been colorized before your eyes. The menu is simple and small, with home-cooked staples that are nonetheless delicious. You won't find page after page of choices, because that's not what you would've found in 1933. You ate what was offered and were glad to have it in your belly, or you stayed home and cooked for yourself. And if you go in with an open mind, you might find you enjoy the simplicity of it.

It's a small, intimate, casual place but you can dress up if you feel like it. The owner is almost always there and he loves to tell the story. You can order a Manhattan, Robin-style (that's me), and he'll make it for you. The staff is small but professional, as is the kitchen.

If you love old buildings, love a good story, love tasty food and are also inhaling that first breath of revitalization in Utica, frequent this place. It's right up your alley, literally.

“Meatballs!”
Reviewed 15 July 2014

The restaurant was small but very cozy. Nice decor. The staff was very personable and knowledgeable. It was fairly late so a very limited menu was available.......so glad we stayed! Our bartender suggested the meatballs with long hots........best meatballs ever! Will definitely go back!
