Thank you so much to the Angsana Balaclava and all it's staff for giving my wife and I the most unforgettable wedding and honeymoon. It's taken us a while to sit down and write this review, but our memories are still so vivid that we can write as if we only left yesterday. We put our trust in this hotel and it's staff to organise and overseas the most important day of our lives. And without any hesitation, we can shout from the roof tops that the whole experience far exceeded our highest expectations.
The hotel is just beautiful, you can see that on the photographs. But what you don't see are the staff: the front desk staff; the waiters and waitresses; the chefs; the barmen; the beach staff; the boat house staff; the wedding coordinators; the spar and gym staff; the house keeping and maintenance staff and the groundsmen. It is these people that make this hotel special. We spent three weeks at the Angsana Balaclava, and in that time the level of service remained consistently exceptional. The hotel should be very proud of every member of staff. They all work so hard and take great pride in their work. We will always be so grateful to you all for making this the most wonderful time of our lives.
We chose the Angsana Balaclava because we were looking for pure luxury, in its own self-contained bubble of paradise, a world away from our usual Central London lifestyle, and where we could have the intimate wedding by the sea that we dreamt of. The Angsana Balaclava ticked all these boxes and more. What we also liked about the Angsana Balaclava is that they only have one wedding per day. In fact, our wedding day (30th September 2013) was the first wedding for 10 days, and after, it was a further 10 days until the next one. If you are planning a wedding in Mauritius, then you must come to the Angsana Balaclava.
We'd opted for a spa package, which meant that we were staying in one of the Spa Suites (216). The suite was amazing, having it's own balcony and plunge pool. We were on the third floor (there are three floors), which had a great view of the sea, via the beach front apartments. We would recommend a third floor room if you can get one as they do seem a bit more private. Though we must say that privacy was never a problem anywhere in the hotel. As part of our package we had a 90 minunte spar treatment each, everyday for 15 of the 20 days we were there. What complete luxury. All the staff in the spa were amazing and the massages were unbelievably good; so relaxing, from our first massage to our last massage. The spa ladies really are experts in what they do.
We were at the hotel for about a week before our wedding. During this time we met with Rooma, the wedding coordinator who organised our big day. She was great; very friendly and made sure every request we had was met. She sat down with us and discussed all the different options available, including flowers, the venue, venue decorations, cake, the evening meal and menu etc. Rooma really did take all the stress out of the big day.
Also, we were made to feel so special around the hotel. Many of staff knew of our up-coming wedding and would always ask us about how we were feeling and how the preparations were going. Despite not having any family or friends with us for our wedding, we still felt like we were surrounded by people who genuinely cared - a family away from home.
The day itself was perfect. We had a very close call with the weather, but in the end the sun came and everything was just incredible. My wife had her hair and make-up done in the spa, and I must say she looked amazing. A big thank you to all the Spa ladies for helping Kira prepare. We chose to have the ceremony on the beach front terrace of the Imperial Villa, which was decorated with the most beautiful flower arch over-looking the sea. We also had a decorated table next to the arch, on top of which was our wedding cake. Neither of us like conventional wedding cake, so we asked if we could have a chocolate sponge cake instead. We must say a big thank you to Rika, the dessert chef; she made the most delicious chocolate sponge wedding cake for us. We'd also like to thank Yann and Rooma for being our witnesses (we think Yann has the biggest smile on the whole of Mauritius).
Our evening wedding meal was also amazing. Thank you to Executive Chef Suardi and his kitchen for cooking one of the nicest meals we've ever eaten. There were a few menus to choose from, but we decided to mixed and match to get the perfect one for us. The food was absolutely delicious. In fact, all the food we ate at the hotel was incredible. During our whole three weeks we never ate the same evening meal more than once. Every night there was a different three course menu, with up to 4 choices for each course. The food was consistently some of the best food we have ever eaten, and we've eaten at some of the best restaurants in London. We even got a chance to go behind the scenes with Sous Chef Curtis you showed us how to cook the most amazing Mauritian curry and with Rika, the dessert chef, who showed us how to cook baked banana samosas.
There are so many members of staff we'd like to thank, some of which have been mentioned. However, there are a few that require a special mention.
Preetum is the restaurant and beverage manager, and was omnipresent in the restaurant both at breakfast and in the evening, tirelessly coordinating the excellent service, which never faltered during our three week stay. Preetum has perfected the balance of friendliness and professionalism; always finding time to talk with us but at the same time never taking his eyes off the other guests or his staff; a true master of his craft. We always looked forward to meal times, and speaking with Preetum when we had the chance. He is well travelled and very experienced, and always had a great story to tell. He also makes the best cappuccinos ever, and every morning would decorate the top with a different picture.
Keshave is one of the beach and pool attendants and one of the guides for the sunset boat trip. As we spent a lot of time at the beach, we often had the pleasure of meeting Keshave. He was always happy and smiling and we loved chatting with him, though we hope we never got him into trouble, as we did like to chat a lot. Keshave is a true gentleman, very kind and very thoughtful and would always looked after us. Keshave was also in charge of music for our first dance on our wedding day and he did a great job; it was a perfect moment. We were really honoured to have Keshave there and as part of our day.
Mahesh is a waiter at the hotel and also one of the guides for their sunset boat trip. Despite his young age, Mahesh is one of the best waiters we have ever met. We have eaten at some of the best restaurants in London and Mahesh would not be out of place in any of them. He made providing high-end service seem effortless. His attention to detail was incredible always making sure everything was just right for us. We felt truly looked after by Mahesh during our whole stay and loved getting to know him more during the sunset boat trip. We must also thank Mahesh for attending to us during our wedding day. Again, it was a real privilege to have Mahesh part of our day.
Other members of staff we'd like to mention are Kovelin, Nikhel and Lek, who all worked so hard and with whom it was a pleasure to meet. And also to Jayshree who decorated our suite so beautifully on our wedding day.
There really are too many names to mention, but again we'd like to thank all the staff, not just the ones you meet face to face, but also all the people that work behind the scenes, who all make the Angsana Balaclava the special place that it is. The place, but more importantly, the people, will always have a big place in our hearts and we will never forget our time nor the great people we have met.
Wishing all at the Angsana Balaclava and their families health and happiness for the future.
Our kindest regards
Stephen & Kira (Mr & Mrs Cain)
