A must try place. Not too big but luxurious property where you are guaranteed to have a good stay, food and relaxation- and a good service. Spent a miraculous weekend and we practically did not want to leave our room as it was so greatly done and cosy.

Dear Valued guest,

Thank you for taking the time to leave a TripAdvisor comment following your recent stay at Angsana Balaclava Mauritius. It is with great pleasure that we read of your experience in the Spa Suite.

The exclusive, intimate boutique resort is located a mere 15 minutes away from the bustling capital of Port Louis. It is designed to reflect all that is uniquely Mauritian. We are glad that you chose to stay in the Spa suite as it is very much appreciated with its private relaxation pool and sprawling veranda. You most definitely felt that you could attain holiday bliss without even stepping out.

Once again thank you for your warm comments. We hope you had a safe trip back home and that we will have the pleasure to welcome you back at Angsana Balaclava Mauritius soon.

Yours sincerely,

Pascal Prigent

Thank you so much to the Angsana Balaclava and all it's staff for giving my wife and I the most unforgettable wedding and honeymoon. It's taken us a while to sit down and write this review, but our memories are still so vivid that we can write as if we only left yesterday. We put our trust in this hotel and it's staff to organise and overseas the most important day of our lives. And without any hesitation, we can shout from the roof tops that the whole experience far exceeded our highest expectations.

The hotel is just beautiful, you can see that on the photographs. But what you don't see are the staff: the front desk staff; the waiters and waitresses; the chefs; the barmen; the beach staff; the boat house staff; the wedding coordinators; the spar and gym staff; the house keeping and maintenance staff and the groundsmen. It is these people that make this hotel special. We spent three weeks at the Angsana Balaclava, and in that time the level of service remained consistently exceptional. The hotel should be very proud of every member of staff. They all work so hard and take great pride in their work. We will always be so grateful to you all for making this the most wonderful time of our lives.

We chose the Angsana Balaclava because we were looking for pure luxury, in its own self-contained bubble of paradise, a world away from our usual Central London lifestyle, and where we could have the intimate wedding by the sea that we dreamt of. The Angsana Balaclava ticked all these boxes and more. What we also liked about the Angsana Balaclava is that they only have one wedding per day. In fact, our wedding day (30th September 2013) was the first wedding for 10 days, and after, it was a further 10 days until the next one. If you are planning a wedding in Mauritius, then you must come to the Angsana Balaclava.

We'd opted for a spa package, which meant that we were staying in one of the Spa Suites (216). The suite was amazing, having it's own balcony and plunge pool. We were on the third floor (there are three floors), which had a great view of the sea, via the beach front apartments. We would recommend a third floor room if you can get one as they do seem a bit more private. Though we must say that privacy was never a problem anywhere in the hotel. As part of our package we had a 90 minunte spar treatment each, everyday for 15 of the 20 days we were there. What complete luxury. All the staff in the spa were amazing and the massages were unbelievably good; so relaxing, from our first massage to our last massage. The spa ladies really are experts in what they do.

We were at the hotel for about a week before our wedding. During this time we met with Rooma, the wedding coordinator who organised our big day. She was great; very friendly and made sure every request we had was met. She sat down with us and discussed all the different options available, including flowers, the venue, venue decorations, cake, the evening meal and menu etc. Rooma really did take all the stress out of the big day.

Also, we were made to feel so special around the hotel. Many of staff knew of our up-coming wedding and would always ask us about how we were feeling and how the preparations were going. Despite not having any family or friends with us for our wedding, we still felt like we were surrounded by people who genuinely cared - a family away from home.

The day itself was perfect. We had a very close call with the weather, but in the end the sun came and everything was just incredible. My wife had her hair and make-up done in the spa, and I must say she looked amazing. A big thank you to all the Spa ladies for helping Kira prepare. We chose to have the ceremony on the beach front terrace of the Imperial Villa, which was decorated with the most beautiful flower arch over-looking the sea. We also had a decorated table next to the arch, on top of which was our wedding cake. Neither of us like conventional wedding cake, so we asked if we could have a chocolate sponge cake instead. We must say a big thank you to Rika, the dessert chef; she made the most delicious chocolate sponge wedding cake for us. We'd also like to thank Yann and Rooma for being our witnesses (we think Yann has the biggest smile on the whole of Mauritius).

Our evening wedding meal was also amazing. Thank you to Executive Chef Suardi and his kitchen for cooking one of the nicest meals we've ever eaten. There were a few menus to choose from, but we decided to mixed and match to get the perfect one for us. The food was absolutely delicious. In fact, all the food we ate at the hotel was incredible. During our whole three weeks we never ate the same evening meal more than once. Every night there was a different three course menu, with up to 4 choices for each course. The food was consistently some of the best food we have ever eaten, and we've eaten at some of the best restaurants in London. We even got a chance to go behind the scenes with Sous Chef Curtis you showed us how to cook the most amazing Mauritian curry and with Rika, the dessert chef, who showed us how to cook baked banana samosas.

There are so many members of staff we'd like to thank, some of which have been mentioned. However, there are a few that require a special mention.

Preetum is the restaurant and beverage manager, and was omnipresent in the restaurant both at breakfast and in the evening, tirelessly coordinating the excellent service, which never faltered during our three week stay. Preetum has perfected the balance of friendliness and professionalism; always finding time to talk with us but at the same time never taking his eyes off the other guests or his staff; a true master of his craft. We always looked forward to meal times, and speaking with Preetum when we had the chance. He is well travelled and very experienced, and always had a great story to tell. He also makes the best cappuccinos ever, and every morning would decorate the top with a different picture.

Keshave is one of the beach and pool attendants and one of the guides for the sunset boat trip. As we spent a lot of time at the beach, we often had the pleasure of meeting Keshave. He was always happy and smiling and we loved chatting with him, though we hope we never got him into trouble, as we did like to chat a lot. Keshave is a true gentleman, very kind and very thoughtful and would always looked after us. Keshave was also in charge of music for our first dance on our wedding day and he did a great job; it was a perfect moment. We were really honoured to have Keshave there and as part of our day.

Mahesh is a waiter at the hotel and also one of the guides for their sunset boat trip. Despite his young age, Mahesh is one of the best waiters we have ever met. We have eaten at some of the best restaurants in London and Mahesh would not be out of place in any of them. He made providing high-end service seem effortless. His attention to detail was incredible always making sure everything was just right for us. We felt truly looked after by Mahesh during our whole stay and loved getting to know him more during the sunset boat trip. We must also thank Mahesh for attending to us during our wedding day. Again, it was a real privilege to have Mahesh part of our day.

Other members of staff we'd like to mention are Kovelin, Nikhel and Lek, who all worked so hard and with whom it was a pleasure to meet. And also to Jayshree who decorated our suite so beautifully on our wedding day.

There really are too many names to mention, but again we'd like to thank all the staff, not just the ones you meet face to face, but also all the people that work behind the scenes, who all make the Angsana Balaclava the special place that it is. The place, but more importantly, the people, will always have a big place in our hearts and we will never forget our time nor the great people we have met.

Wishing all at the Angsana Balaclava and their families health and happiness for the future.

Our kindest regards

Stephen & Kira (Mr & Mrs Cain)

If your absolute highest priority is a beach of talcum powder sand and clear blue water teeming with exotic fish then this is not the hotel for you, which would be a big shame,
BUT
If you are looking for a high standard of accommodation, excellent food and customer service then read on.

We visited Mauritius to celebrate one of those "special" birthdays of my husband and thought long and hard about where to stay. Do we choose stunning location over levels of comfort and service? A difficult decision but I am happy that we made the right choice when we chose Angsana Balaclava. It does not have the best location as all the best spots were probably snapped up by the older hotels but it makes up for that in other ways.

We stayed in a ground floor beachfront suite with a very large private pool and jacuzzi. As many other reviewers have pointed out the pool is not heated which I did not think would be too much of a problem in October but it was still a little too chilly to fully enjoy. This was probably due to much of it being shaded as I did find the main pool, which gets more sun, to be a slightly more appealing temperature. The concept of a cold jacuzzi I am not so sure about. Anyway, the size of the pool was impressive and I found that I could swim 13/14 breaststrokes from front to back. The pool is accessible from either the balcony/decking area or from the huge bathroom via the electric shutter door. We spent a lot of time on our decking area but found it very strange that there was only one sofa to stretch out on when there was enough room for two. We solved this by moving one of the sun loungers from the beach outside our suite. The beach was very well supplied with regular sun loungers and a number of luxurious daybeds and there was never a problem finding either free. Unfortunately the sand was not of the fine powder variety and could be uncomfortable to walk on and although the sea was much warmer than the pools it was rather rocky and due to it not being crystal clear it was not always possible to spot the rocks hence my opening remarks.

The suite itself was beautiful and very well equipped. Many reviewers have criticised the charge made for use of the coffee maker but this appears to have been addressed as we received complimentary supplies of tea and coffee each day in addition to 2 bottles of water and fresh fruit. The bed was extremely comfortable and the ceiling fan above it provided sufficient air circulation to enable us to leave the air conditioning off at night. The large TV was of little importance to us as I much prefer the no shoes, no news approach on holiday (save for internet access which I shall come to) but the entertainment unit also came with an i-pod docking station and a CD player. It was a couple of days before we discovered that the TV displayed the daily activities so be sure to check them out. It also came with a keyboard which theoretically enabled access to the internet through the TV screen. Our first keyboard was faulty but it was immediately replaced. Unfortunately we could not figure out exactly how to use it to navigate the internet and neither could 2 gentlemen who came to assist. We had, however, brought our own netbook and although we could pick up a very strong wi-fi signal (even outside on the balcony) were initially unable to access the internet due to a technical problem with the netbook. This brings me to my first example of great customer service. When we mentioned this to a member of staff at reception they offered to have an IT expert who was coming the next day have a look at it. Sure enough - the next day we were back on line. Service above and beyond I think.

There was a separate dressing area consisting of a vanity unit with two basins, a dressing table and large wardrobes with plenty of storage space. On my husband's birthday one of the basins was filled with flowers and floating candles - beautiful - thank you. The main bathroom was larger than our garage and housed a shower cubicle with both waterfall and conventional showers and the facility to turn it into a steam room. The gigantic rock bath also had a handheld shower over it and the whole package came with a lovely variety of toiletries many of which came in pump action bottles. I would have to say that the body lotion was so rich and creamy that it was unsuitable for this method of dispensing but if you dismantle the bottle and resort to giving it the old "ketchup" thumping that works!

One thing that I found sadly missing in the suite was a directory of facilities and services. Upon arrival we were given a guided tour of the resort and a running commentary filled with detail which our travel weary brains could not absorb. I made the mistake of thinking that it would all be written down somewhere - wrong. When I queried this I was told that anything we wanted to know we only had to ask and sure enough any specific questions we had were always answered with the utmost enthusiasm but sometimes it was a little like catch 22. What if they provide things you don't even think of asking for? PLEASE management - consider supplying written information.

Food at both breakfast and dinner was superb and within 2 days one of the waitresses in particular had sussed out our tastes and preferences. I should apologise at this point for not recalling the names of the many members of staff who served and assisted us throughout our stay in every area of the resort and regularly recalled our names. There was live evening entertainment on 4 occasions during our 7 night stay. Personally this is not something we seek as, at times, the volume prevented normal conversation at dinner but I would have to say that having Happy Birthday played on a sitar was a first for us! Whilst I would not criticise the talents of the entertainers I was surprised that an establishment of this type would consider it necessary as I could not help feeling that many more of our fellow guests were of the type who would prefer the peace and tranquility of the small intimate resort which this is.

The hotel arrange excursions at a very reasonable rate and when we could not find quite what we were looking for in their collection of suggested itineraries they assisted us in putting together a tailor made trip in a private car with driver/guide for the same price as one of their "packages". One important tip - you can add the cost to your room account or pay the driver in cash yourselves. If you add it to your bill you will also have 20% tax and service charge added so I would recommend paying in cash. For us this did involve an experience I have never encountered before. Although we could have exchanged travellers' cheques in the hotel they did admit that we would obtain a better rate elsewhere. Whilst on our trip our driver took us to a beauru d'change but for some strange reason they would not exchange Visa US dollar travellers' cheques and directed us to a bank. The bank would not exchange them unless we had an account there!!! We ended up having to resort to the hotel upon our return and have the driver wait patiently for his money.

We did not use the spa or pool area often but I would briefly say that we were impressed by the number of complimentary facilities on offer in the spa complex and found the pool area very pleasant, comfortable and relaxing with plenty of room and loungers. Similarly, the boathouse provided a good variety of water sports.

As has been said many times before the cost of drinks, particularly wine, really is unacceptably high and I mention it again only because I know that these comments are carefully considered by the management and I would wish to add our names to the long list of other guests who have complained of this but I appreciate that it is no doubt governed by company policy.

We did suffer a couple of maintenance issues in our particular suite but most importantly they were addressed promptly and at the end of our stay we were allowed a free late checkout by way of apology (in addition to the personal apologies received). Mistakes and breakdowns can happen anywhere but the measure of a good establishment and management team is how they deal with them. Our experience served to reinforce the view that customer care is taken very seriously at Angsana Balaclava and we were made to feel like old friends not just paying guests.

In conclusion, if you are looking for a small intimate resort with very good accommodation, food and service then I would highly recommend this hotel. If you want pristine beaches and turquoise waters to snorkel then go to the South Pacific or the Maldives but it will cost you a whole lot more!!

We would like to thank you once again for leaving a comment on Trip Advisor following your stay at Angsana Balaclava Mauritius.

Nestled in the secluded area of Turtle Bay, Angsana Balaclava Mauritius with its 52 suites, offers a hideaway ideal for travellers looking for privacy and relaxation. The Beachfront suite was definitely a great choice with its private relaxation pool you can immerse yourself in a holiday bliss worry free. We do hope that you enjoyed the various in-room facilities such as the steam shower, oversized neck rain shower and spacious private balcony. I am pleased to know that you found the size of the pool 'impressive' and that you were able to do your backstrokes comfortably without feeling restricted in your movements. We are even happier to read that you made yourself at home by moving the sun loungers from the beach to your Beachfront.

Pauline and Denis it is with great pleasure that I read your comment. You have made use of nearly all our facilities such as the restaurant and we thank you for that. It is very encouraging to know that some of our associates went the extra mile during your stay. Our team is dedicated and always ready to make each guest stay special.

You have spent a lot of time detailing our resort and we would like to express our gratitude. Your warm comments have been passed on to the IT team that assisted you with your notebook. Being on holidays often means we have to disconnect from the real world for a moment but we are glad that you were able to enjoy the use of technology during your stay.

However we would like to apologize for the service you encountered during your stay. I would like to seize this opportunity to present my excuses for the disappointing standards. We have taken notes of your comments and we thank you as they will truly help us monitor and improve further our Angsana services and facilities.

We trust you had a safe trip back to the UK and we look forward to your next stay at Angsana Balaclava Mauritius.

On the North Side of the Island, Balaclava is a developing gem to the island. The Angsana, just 18 months old has to be one of the best resorts I have been to in many years.

The SPA Suite was excellent, all the amenities you would expect in a 5 star resort, but the additional private pool and the terrace/balcony became a night time living space.

The food was fantastic, each evening brought a new menu to cater for all palates and tastes, Great selection of drinks and wines.

The jewel in the crown for me was the staff, ready and able to serve any request, whilst the Angasana is a honeymoon, couples destination, the staff attended to my 2 children with ease, we did not for one second feel out of place.

I highly recommend Angsana and will certainly visit there again!

If you want luxury and service in the high end, this is at good choice. Near 100 square meters beach bungalow. Outstanding service. And the food ..... Oh la la - like a Michelin restaurant.
The only disadvantage is the cost of wine - and when you get tired of relaxing, the distance to life outside the resort.

My husband and I have just returned from a truly amazing two week honeymoon with Angsana Balaclava in Mauritius. On arrival at the hotel we were provided with warm towels to freshen up after our extremely long journey and some refreshing drinks whilst being taken through check in, once check in was complete we were given a brief tour of the property and taken to our wonderful room. We had a spa suite which was vey spacious and more importantly luxurious! We had a private plunge pool on the terrace which overlooked a beautiful garden and had spectacular views of the sea - I spent many evenings sitting outside listening to the birds and it was just wonderful. The food was also the BEST I have ever had at any hotel, there was a different three course menu every evening with three choices for every taste - the chef is amazing. The service and staff at Angsana are what really make this a fabulous hotel - Preetum Beehary the assistant restaurant manager was just an absolute delight, no matter how busy the restaurant was he made his way round each and every table to make sure we were all enjoying our meal and always checking if we needed anything else - we had many interesting chats with him and thoroughly enjoyed his company. We felt truly looked after and also felt like we built a friendship which is lovely. This man deserves a payrise - he was there first thing in the morning through to when we retired to bed almost every day of ourtrip and always had a smile on face and a cheery persona - a credit to the hotel. Another member of staff that particularly stood out was Kehsave who worked in the lunchtime restaurant - he was attentive and very friendly - he spent a large amount of time looking after the guests who were sun bathing and everyone appreciated it. Our special honeymoon meal on the deck by the pool was something to remember - they selected a gorgeous meal for us and we enjoyed every second of it. I don't have one bad word to say about this hotel and I WILL definitely be going back. I would recommend Angsana to anyone looking for an amazing hotel, with great service in paradise. Thanks for a wonderful holiday. ND x
