“The Maritim excels!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 22 October 2013

We'd read the hotel's website, various reviews (some on here) and Virgin Holidays own description of the Maritim but none of it prepared us. Everything is so good: attention to detail, cleanliness, facilities, location, And the staff: genuine, friendly, helpful, nothing's too much trouble. I suspect that some people may find their informal manner uncomfortable but we found it refreshing and a true joy. We upgraded to the Prestige room which was very nice indeed and this added the opportunity to use the La Maree restaurant on the beach in addition to the buffet "all inclusive" restaurant. The "all inclusive" buffet restaurant was also excellent with a wide range of meal choices, mix'n'match to your hearts content and always changing so you never got bored. We also bought a meal passport on site which gave us use of all the a la cart restaurants and they were all superb - especially the Asian which I particularly loved. The free water sports were extensive but I have to admit I mostly watched from a distance whilst soaking up the rays and swimming in the crystal clear sea. We also used the Spa for a relaxing afternoon and got bent into shapes I didn't think were possible but came out refreshed and relaxed all ready for a quiet sit down in the bar overlooking the bay with a free G&T (all inclusive). I can recommend this hotel without reservation and we'll definitely be going back again.

My family and I have recently returned from a 10 night all inclusive stay at the Maritim and we thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it!

The hotel and grounds are amazing, the staff extremely helpful and the food was fantastic. We all stayed in privilege rooms which had plenty of space, a massive bed and a fantastic bathroom! The pool is lovely (although most of it is quite shallow!) and the beds are so comfortable! Most nights we ate at the Belle Vue buffet restaurant as the food was amazing. We also went to Les Filaos, the beer garden, for spare rib night and whilst it was lovely food and a nice setting maybe not worth the extra you have to pay. The quarter deck bar was our favourite place for evening drinks, there were plenty of options available on the all inclusive menu and the service was excellent.

We had our wedding on 9th October in the gazebo on the beach and it was absolutely perfect. Mahdavi the wedding coordinator is fantastic and arranged everything exactly how we wanted it :-) the flowers were beautiful, hairdresser in the spa was fantastic (and didn't panic or rush even though we was running late!) and the photographer we had took some amazing photographs! We chose the Mauritian Barbecue from the 'magic moments' for our wedding dinner and had a table set up in the gazebo with our own private chef and waiter. They even printed us personalised menus which was a lovely surprise! It was the perfect ending to a perfect day!

Chateau mon desir - My husband and I also had dinner in the fine dining restaurant. We wouldn't usually eat in a restaurant like this but as it was part of our wedding package we decided to give it a go - the food and setting was lovely and service was excellent and once again they had printed us personalised menus.

Things to do - walking with lions at Casela Nature park is a must! It was such an amazing experience. We also went on the blue safari submarine trip which was fab. It's also worth taking a stroll around the hotel grounds - the giant tortoises, ruins and waterfalls are well worth a visit!

Tips

- if you are due to arrive at the hotel early in the day it would be worth seeing if early check in is available. We arrived at around 9am and had to hang around until 2pm for our rooms!

- if you are getting married and intend to buy the photo package budget some extra money for extra prints, the package includes 50 photos but it's impossible to cut it down to only 50, we ended up buying 60 extra!

This is a fabulous hotel from the moment you enter the grounds. The staff are warm and welcoming and nothing is too much trouble. We'd upgraded to a Privilege room and it was well worth doing so - not only for the space and fabulous bathroom but also for the access this gave us to La Maree, the restaurant on the beach.

The food in all the restaurants was excellent with plenty of choice and the bar staff in The Quarterdeck quite often brought refill drinks before we could request them! The Communications Team was constantly on hand to resolve any minor issues or simply to check we were happy.

This was the most expensive holiday we have ever had but it was also the best.

Room Tip: All rooms excellent but upgraded rooms are larger with better bathrooms

What a wonderful place this is! Massive thanks to parvesh who looked after us so well at the quarterdeck and to dave at the beach who even cleans your sunglasses. Lots of great touches like this made for a fantastic honeymoon. We are unlikely to ever be able to afford to go back to this wonderful hotel but we will treasure the memories forever.

It's hard to add anything to previous reviews - let it just be said that we had a fantastic holiday in beautiful surroundings, the standard of food, staff, cleanliness of this hotel is Exceptional.

From the welcome drink and refreshing towel to revive us after our journey until the final goodbye everything was first class.

We had upgraded to a Prestige room, we were able to breakfast at La Maree, the beach restaurant. Delicious fruit platters, eggs benedict, smoked salmon, seafood omelettes, all beautifully presented. We sometimes chose to enjoy a 3 course lunch at La Maree, a different choice each day on the AI menu, for example a started of smoked marlin, roasted chicken thighs with creole sauce and vegetables, pineapple tart and coconut ice cream. Excellent selection of drinks.

We ate in the main Belle Vue restaurant in the evenings, fantastic selection of food each evening, we did not repeat a meal over the 2 weeks. This is top class food, do not belittle "buffet style" - there are "live cooking stations", the chefs are cooking the food in front of you. Waiting staff are all excellent.

Beach and pool staff excellent, providing fresh water as soon as you settle on your sunbed and they are always nearby to take orders for refreshments.

Low key evening entertainment, for example a pianist or a 3 piece group performing in the Quarterdeck Bar. At sunset we often found ourselves at La Maree again, watching the sunset with a rum and coke and maybe some samosas! ( yes, all inclusive)

We hired taxis for day trips - ask for Raj! The hotel even provided a packed lunch which was excellent.

Our Prestige room was superb and the standard of housekeeping second to none. Our room was cleaned twice daily, at the turndown service we always came back to find that the bathroom had been cleaned again, towels changed, shutters drawn, a mosquito repellent plugged in and the cover turned down. Room 354, quiet position overlooking gardens and the sea. Excellent air conditioning, very quiet. We were advised October was the best month to visit the NW coast of Mauritius and the weather was perfect.

The Maritim Estate is beautiful, the gardens are lovely to walk around. Didn't realise how lucky we were to have all that space until we called into another hotel on our way to the airport, straight into the hotel from a dusty road.

The All Inclusive is easy to follow - I don't understand reviewers who had a problem with it.
I would return in a heartbeat.

Room Tip: Worth upgrading to a Prestige Room.

Context - This review has been written by my wife and I who have travelled the globe and are in our 50s. We have experienced many 4 and 5 star hotels in our travels to benchmark our experience in the Maritim Hotel in Mauritius.

The hotel and beach – On arrival, we were greeted by friendly and enthusiastic staff who made the check-in process efficient and easy, accompanied by a refreshing cool drink and flannel much appreciated after an hour-and-a-half journey from the airport to the north mid-west of the island. The hotel sits in a scenic bay and south of what we considered were the most beautiful on the island and these extend to the Grand Baie area. The beach of our hotel was long, white, sweeping sand with deposits of coral intermixed with outcrops of volcanic rock framing the bay. Coral reefs extend across the opening to the bay and, because of these and the sea urchins that live on the reefs it is recommended that rubber shoes are worn when swimming. Swimming in the lovely clear water of the sheltered bay was safe and very enjoyable.

Our ‘privilege’ room – was on the third floor and was immaculate – everything working and quality furnishings with a lovely ocean view of the long sandy beach to the north side. The room had air conditioning and a good size balcony with table and chairs and also a footstool for lounging and watching the sun set. Amenities include: a 32inch flat-screen TV, internet access (also available across most of the site) mini bar (majority of items part of all inclusive package with Virgin) and hairdryer. A kettle with milk, tea and coffee is also provided. Power sockets are both English and European. Both the shower and the voluminous bath are the best quality we have experienced – powerful shower, reliable supply of hot water all day and spacious. The spa shampoo, body wash, conditioner and body lotion were also lovely and invigorating.

The restaurants – service in all of the restaurants was exceptional. We were regularly asked if we required drink top-ups and courses were cleared with efficiency. The main restaurant (included in the all-inclusive package) was the Belle Vue which served consistently high quality breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets with a huge selection every day and menus rotated on a weekly basis. There was always a carvery at the evening meal with good quality meats, fish and vegetarian choices. The drink served at this restaurant were of good range and quality. We highly recommend the Creole coffee at this and the other restaurants and bars – superb.

The hotel also has several other restaurants of which our favourites were La Maree – the à la carte beach restaurant which had fabulous seafood and steak selections on some nights at a modest extra charge over the all-inclusive deal. Seafood choices included giant prawns and lobster charged by weight. The steaks were enormous, tender and rich in flavour. The T-bone was the best we’d tasted in 30+ years.

If you wish to treat yourself to some even greater luxury, the Chateau Mon Desir, is a fine dining restaurant situated on the hill above the hotel with lovely views over the grounds and lagoon and very high quality cuisine and silver service. The food and ambiance of the restaurant is fantastic, though it’s worth bearing in mind this does come with a significant price tag for both food and wine, even taking into account the discount available to all inclusive guests.

Bars – The pool bar was our favourite haunt at sunset. It was a lovely environment to relax and unwind in the bar in the early evening, an ambiance enriched by supping cocktails whilst listening to the pianist tinkling the ivories and watching the beautiful sunsets. The views from the pool bar are stunning at dusk. Entertainment such as live music and dancing was provided in the pool bar and live music was also played in the Maree beach bar and restaurant in the evening which, again created a lovely environment.

Amenities – the hotel has a vast array of water sports and other recreational activities eg. yachting, kayaking, pedalos, snorkeling, water skiing, tennis, archery, horse-riding, crazy golf, well equipped gym, etc. all included the all inclusive package with additional activities like parascending, diving and boat trips which are chargeable. There is also an on-site spa – a very relaxing experience for those who like to be pampered.

The hotel also has its own animal farm with giant tortoises that live to over 100 years old which you can get up close to and feed.

Staff – The staff were the one of the best assets of this hotel. All staff were friendly, welcoming, attentive and considerate. Nothing was ever too much trouble and if you had any requests, the staff would attend to them with courtesy and efficiency. During our stay we met very many staff with whom we were very impressed. We would like to take this opportunity to thank those staff below and can honestly say that, between them, they made our holiday one of the most special and memorable experiences ever.

• Kavita – the communications rep who set up our booking to celebrate our 30th wedding anniversary to enable us to dine at the wonderful Maree restaurant.
• Nash and Laxman – in La Maree – for making our 30th wedding anniversary dinner on the beach so pleasurable and memorable.
• Ajay - for finding and securing my gold necklace for me until I returned to claim it (my hero).
• Vijay and Vidya – at La Maree – great service on our steak night.
• Deven and Riaz – Belle Vue – always smiling and attentive to our every needs – even before we’ve thought of them! Deven - can't thank you enough for your extra special attention - you're a star!
• Mulloo at La Chateau Mon Desir - a class act
• Antoine – chef with soufflés to die for!
• Vimla, Prescilla and Rajesh – so welcoming, and again, warm and attentive service.

A vary special thank you also to Rakhes Fakir the food and beverage manager for making us feel truly welcome and pampered in this excellent hotel.

If you are looking to be spoilt with a truly exotic, relaxing holiday we can highly recommend the Maritim as the place to go.

Room Tip: We were in room 454 on the second floor which offers lovely views over the bay to the north side of...

After a long trip with our wedding just the previous day, I must say we couldnt have chosen a better hotel as the Maritim. Our honeymoon started with an ice cold cloth and an ice cold drink at the reception upon arrival. We were carefully explained all the aspects of the hotel and what there was on offer. We were upgraded to the Privilege room. Room 472. Far from all the huzzle and buzzle. Nice big bathroom, good linen, tv, fridge and with the all inclusive package I must say this is a must. All the staff is very very very helpful and friendly. We especially want to thank the following staff at the Maritim. Eddy the head Chef...what a surprise on preparing for us an excellent curry without any effort. That was the best curry we had in a long time. Thank you Eddy. Then Chinapiel from house keeping always made me smile and went the extra mile to get us relaxed in a clean hotel room after our late dinners. Ansouya and Visal and the rest of the waiters that getting to know you after the first day at the hotel. They know excactly what you like to drink and where we like to sit. A huge thanks to Moira and Anette and the rest of management who made the effort to introduce themselves personally to us.This was the best honeymoon and I will most definitely visit the Maritim in the near future. Thank you Maritim for the best honeymoon at the best hotel. Andre and Marinda

Room Tip: The Rooms from 460 is on the outer side of the Hotel and very quiet.
