“Bliss at its best”
Reviewed 17 June 2014

We have just returned from a weeks holiday at the Merville Hotel, Management has done an amazing job at training the staff to be courteous, friendly and helpful at all times which is certainly noticeable from the time you enter the gates. I was presented with a birthday cake with my name written on it which was a lovely gesture and one I will remember. Our room was clean, comfortable and had magnificent ocean views. The only negative is that it can be noisy. Entertainment was laid on every evening with live music which can be heard very clearly from the rooms above, which isn't ideal if you are not a night owl and the noise starts early in the mornings with staff laying the tables for breakfast, other than that it is perfect for a blissful getaway and will certainly return.

Room Tip: Try and get a room where there is less noise

Few hotels offer water ski and wake boarding as free water sport. The staff is friendly and quite attentive to your needs. The beach is amazing and cleaned every morning. We had a deluxe room and it was quite spacious and right on the beach. Beautiful and although we had the buffet every night the food was not bad or mundane. The sega show on a friday is super fun and the hotel sometimes host free cocktails on the beach or happy hour cocktail.

We were offered breakfast on the beach and it was so special as we were getting married, they really went out of their way to please us and we were also offered a complementary bottle of Champagne of our wedding night with treats.

The spa is also very nice, we have a wonderful massage and body wrap.

Only thing unpleasant is that the rooms are not fully sound proof.

This was our first visit to Mauritius and we recommend to you to stay at Merville Beach Hotel. You will enjoy your stay from the moment you walk in. We had a de lux seafront room and it was perfect. Such lovely friendly people. Rooms are very clean and the food exceptional. Not to mention the tasteful cocktails. We took the all inclusive package and had a boll. Merville is well situated nearby Grand Baie and the Bazaar all in walking distance. The excursions offered by the Hotel are also excellent.

I stayed in this hotel in January 2014 for 2 weeks. The weather was really very hot, sometimes it was raining and very humid, so if I go back I'll prefer different time of year.
The hotel is really a very relaxing quiet place to stay. I was given a room in the bungalow instead of single room. On the arrival we were met by the young lady who spoke Russian (I was really very impressed by that), she offered us juice and helped to check-in. All the staff is really helpful and cheerful. The room was nice and spacious, decorated white and blue. The shower and the bathtub were separated. The only thing was that in the bathroom a little bit of some brown liquid was leaking through the ceiling, but usually it was cleaned by the maid. A small bathroom window was the way to the ants, but it didn't bother me. I suppose it's natural when you live in bungalow surrounded by the garden.
There was a kettle in the room, the staff provided a bottle of drinking water, tea/coffee daily free of charge.
If you live in the bungalow be aware of the fact that some of the rooms are adjacent, divided by internal door, so you can hear everything that happens behind the wall. I was lucky, my neighbours were very quiet.
The food is ok, not gourmet of course, but still different thematic dinners were organized - Chinese, Tropical, etc. No ice-cream, I'd prefer more fruit. For breakfast - freshly made pancakes and crepes (mmm;)))
The beach is fantastic, very still warm water, white sand, impressive sunsets. The hotel organizes free snorkling, volleyball and other beach activities, so you won't be bored by lying on the beach all day long.
Free Wi-Fi - and what surprised me most - FREE phone booth to call anywhere in the world near the hotel reception!!!
10 minutes walk from the hotel there is a small supermarket, and 25 minutes walk - Grand Bay village with shopping and restaurants. It takes 40 minutes from Grand Bay by express air-conditioned bus to get to the capital - Port Lous, with big shopping centre (including Hugo Boss and Ralph Lauren) and spectacular local market (souvenirs, exotic fruit and spices).
The hotel in general is not luxurious, but it is really worth 4 stars. I felt very comfortable and relaxed there. Highly recommended!

Just returned from the Merville Beach Hotel yesterday. This place is amazing - had a really great time here. The staff are all so friendly and cheerful and cannot do enough for you - special thanks to Chandan (mine's a beer), Varsha and Joel who are the best bar/waiting staff we have ever met.

Our enormous room was amazing - beachfront deluxe on the top floor of the main building - views to die for - kept extremely clean and tidy constantly. As it was a birthday trip, we were provided with a bottle of bubbly (lovely surprise) and a birthday cake at dinner on the day. Also in the room, robes and slippers, refilled mini bar and peanuts, tea/coffee and t-shirt and sarong.

The position of the hotel is absolutely stunning, with a gorgeous very well sheltered very long beach. You can walk along the beach both ways - to Perebyere or Grand Baie (requires quite a bit of rock climbing though!) or along the road to both also. Both places are very nice with little bars and restaurants - we had a lovely grilled red snapper lunch.

The food in the hotel is really nice and very plentiful with a great selection - lots of themes and curries which we like. If you are not into buffets you can order the a la carte menu a day beforehand which we had 3 times and is also lovely. Also food available nearly all day at the bar (sandwiches and chips, burgers, fish, pizzas etc.) We also saw these supplied to particularly fussy eaters in the main restaurant at dinner - if you want anything just ask - nothing is too much trouble. There is also a lobster evening on the beach - looked lovely but didn't go as not into shellfish. There is also a very plentiful supply of drinks always served with a smile - we found it very unusual not to have to go to the actual bar to order at all during our whole stay!

Water sports are available free all day from a very friendly team at the boathouse - we did pedaloes, canoeing, glass bottom boat, snorkelling trip, water skiing - these were all available on demand and we never had to wait for anything.

Evening entertainment was good - the band singing a variety of music and a few different floor shows. Was surprised to see so many people on the dance floor. Maybe a little too much Sega for our liking in our second week, but then this is Mauritius!

We travelled with Away Holidays who we must just mention as being excellent. The most amazing service was provided by them from start to finish - I booked via Teresa Bates who was excellent. The organisation at the Mauritius end was also spot on.

We had an amazing holiday here for a special birthday and there is not one thing that we can complain about. Yes, the hotel is an older one, but the location, friendliness, service and great organisation here far outweighs this and we didn't have any problems at all. We do not really go for marble and chandeliers - can be very bland and uninspiring - we like a bit of character in a hotel where you can feel the vibe of the country you are visiting.

Quick hello to Yvonne and Dave who made our holiday even more enjoyable.

We would definitely love to return to this hotel and have already recommended it to our many friends and family.

Tracy and Bernie
