“Nice Hotel in Mauritius.”
Reviewed 3 March 2014

We enjoyed our stay at the Veranda Grand Baie Hotel & Spa. Amenities are good, nice quiet beach and my favorite was the entertainment every night for the hotel guests. Con's was not pleased with the Taxi's referred by the hotel, they are in cahoots to rip off tourists and charge a lot of money to take you to very expensive shopping stores instead of where the locals go. The Taxi's were a representation of the hotel and was a downside to the other goodness about the hotel. Food was okay, some of the staff were friendly some looked tired because they work long hours.

Would recommend the hotel and upon my return would probably stay on another part of the island only because we did not get to see the southern part.

Room Tip: Rooms are good being near the beach.

I spent 8 nights at the Veranda, in Feb 2014, and I have to say it was beyond my expectations! The buffet style breakfasts and dinners are scrumptious, the staff are very friendly and accommodating with special requests. Julio at the front desk is a service super star! He is very detailed and caring! If you enjoy a non pretentious family resort, where you can relax completely, then this is the place to be in Grand Baie. I will definitely return again in 6 months time.

I got back last week from my second visit to Veranda Grand Baie Hotel. The reason I chose this hotel was because it is central to everything and within walking distance and is a little more affordable than some of the 4 star hotels. I have travelled to Mauritius 8 times before and have stayed at a few different hotels in the past too.

This time at Veranda, there was a definate improvement in the quality and taste of the food. I still say that there could be more variety when it comes to the food and less rice dishes. Not many were interested in the rice that they served every single night.

The rooms were lovely and clean, spacious enough. The lady that cleaned our room was always ver friendly. The staff were helpful and friendly. Met some lovely people from all over the world. Was a lovel stay.

Even though there could be more variety with the food, I would definately go back again.

If you like the night life, I alway suggest to start off some drinks at Banana Lounge and afer head off for some dance music and OMG (more locals there) and Insomnia is more touristy. But they were both lovely. I preferred OMG night club as it was more spacious and not so hot inside there.

I always visit the Grand Baie Bazaar (market) which is down one of the side roads. Becareful there becaus they will alway start at the highest price and often try to rip off the tourists. So bargain prices with them before just paying the first price they offer.

Always a lovely Cafe to visit for ice cream, sorbet and light lunches is Sun Cafe. Beautiful views.

All in all, had a great stay, if you have never been to Mauritius before, be sure to protect yourself with mosquito repellant.

I would recommend staying at Vernanda, smaller resort, friendly staff but hope for more variet on the food in future and less rice;-)

Room Tip: The first time I was there I had a room more secluded and private away from the bar and pool. This...

First the great , location is fantastic . Housekeeping are excellent and the management especially the general manager and F&B manager are very front of house and visible. The guys selling speedboat etc really deliver a great experience at a fair price. View is amazing
The good-glass bottom trip enjoyable , drinks have a realistic price range to restaurant prices .
The average - room amenities more 3 star than 4 . Facilities more 3 than 4.
The poor - breakfast poor selection , toaster knackered half the time , chefs uniform a bit grimey. Shower area in the bathrooms and staining on the bathroom walls are disconcerting. Air con is also poor.
Overall a good experience if you work on a 3 star basis but struggles to be 4 star

Room Tip: Rooms away from the disco for the all inclusives

We spent 9 days in the here at the start of February.
We found out that this is the height of Mauritian summer and cyclone season after booking but it is a great time to go - high temperatures and a relieving bit of passing cloud and wind most afternoons. Whatever you do, don't pack anything heavier than a tshirt!

Anyway, about the hotel ... Small! And small is exactly what we wanted. The staff are great and if you are wanting a chat and a laugh they will provide throughout your stay but without any of the mainstream hotel forced entertainment by the staff. (There are two entertainers whose names I apologise but forget but they too will have a friendly chat without making you feel harassed to play volleyball for your entire stay.)

The room was spacious (room 300 - think it was a superior - was on the end of a block with no second storey so we had a neighbour to one side only - made it well worth the subtly disguised lpg tank and road adjacent and resulted in a very quiet stay). Air con absolutely essential and works fine - ceiling fan good to give it a boost when you first go in after a hard day's work sitting by the pool.

We stayed as a couple escaping home life for a while as our son was staying with grandparents in the UK - yes there were a few children but nothing at all to complain about. It is a children friendly hotel but more directed at couples with younger children. The play area is well away from the pool.

Food, cleanliness and staff brilliant.

Special staff mentions for Meven and Avynash (bar staff) who were great throughout (and we spent enough time with them to test the service!!!!)

Stephy (reception) who welcomed us on our arrival at a nice early 8am with the same smile and enthusiasm she gave every day - particularly on our last evening where we had a chat about ferrets and the farm she would like one day :-D

The hotel manageress is often around either saying hello to guests, checking the food before dinner time or generally keeping in touch with her business and staff - it is nice to see her taking an actual role within this business.

The free activities at the hotel's beach hut really are free with all inclusive and you can pretty much any time walk up to them and ask for a peddalo or kayak (we didn't ask for the boat trip and snorkelling - think you would be better booking the day before to make sure).

Being close to the town (5min walk) is great with lots of local shops (inc. food stands and Bazar) and the locals are all friendly. Only came across one begging man which was a surprise to us and we were out in town on at least 4 times.
We spent a night in the banana beach lounge early on in the stay where the bar staff kept our drinks filled and again locals were friendly. The lager (Phoenix) which is found everywhere in Mauritus can't be faulted and the guy in banana beach club provides the perfect JD and coke!

We went on a katamaran trip on one day - sea was incredibly rough but must admit that this was declared on the hotel notice board (we scoffed at this before we went as the bay at the back of the hotel looked fine but once out to sea it was a different story!) As always the guys on the boat are great and would love to get you to drink the bar dry. However, the island was a bit disappointing as we were hoping to explore but this is not really an option (think it is a privately owned island). We only had about an hour and a half spent on the beach but the snorkelling was great and that kept me perfectly happy.

Also we went on a speed boat trip to snorkel with turtles with a guy called Jean (I forget his second name but he has good english, generously shoulder length hair, a red and white speed boat with leather seats and can often be found waiting for interest at the front of Veranda). Jean has over 20yr experience with this and can spot a turtle what seems like miles away from the boat or in the water. He has a great attitude to the sea life - picked me up a bit of shell, a puffa fish (living and released) and another shell that he made a point of returning as I was not sure if someone was living in it or not but he didn't give me chance to take it out by accident! Don't be under the illusion you will cuddle a turtle because you won't - they are very much wild and keep their distance but 6ft from a wild turtle was fine by me!

100% recommend the whole trip (maybe except the 12hr flights)!!!!

Room Tip: Rooms around the pool are convenient and some have better views but probably noisier.

Just back from a week....had an amazing time, really enjoyed it. Loved the fact it was small as the place had a very relaxed friendly atmosphere. I was worried before going (had booked before checking weather) as it is cyclone time. There were times of the day when it was overcast for about half an hour but it was welcome as it was so hot......beware though as easy to still get burnt....or get a tan when it is like this.

We didn't go on organised tours but opted to rent a taxi for the day through reception. Cost only £70 for the day, compared to about £70 each for organised tours. Taxi driver was excellent, took us through wee villages and gave brilliant insight to the island. We went to the tea plantation - well worth a visit and the place where the giant tortoises are (sorry cannot remember the name) - totally amazing....a memory for ever.

To end must give praise to Meven the bar attendant.....or rather trainee bar attendant, why still trainee not sure as .....he was really good, got cocktails just right...not overly strong but strong enough, pleasant, courteous and friendly....just the perfect balance.....

Well worth a visit and would definitely go back.

Room Tip: Try and get a room not overlooking pool if you go to bed early, music stops about 11 and could be no...

Having read the previous review I was stunned and wondered if they had stayed in the same place. We have just returned from a fortnight relaxing break here and it was wonderful. It is not a five star property and is not advertised as such but it is a friendly , clean and very pleasant hotel with a wonderful ambience and first class staff.

Yes there was a few children and I mean a few - half a dozen at the most and to be honest most of the time you did not know they were there ! ! The rooms were very clean and had everything you could want - the only criticism I would make is that they do lack storage for clothes but we managed . They were set among lovely gardens and were spotlessly clean and kept that way throughout our stay with lovely clean and fresh linen and towels which is far more important and on the plus side had a great shower with endless hot water !!!!

The general hotel areas were also very well kept and maintained. The public toilets were immaculate , the pools and seating areas were always clean.

Entertainment is provided by Clive and his team and there was something for everyone yet if you chose not to participate it was not in your face. We thoroughly enjoyed the aqua gym !! There was always something every night from karaoke to a singer , local dancers etc which you could chose to watch or just dine and have a drink if you wanted.

Food - Breakfast was lovely - everything you could want and always fresh and hot. Lunch was generally off the a la carte menu and was cooked to order - it was first class and a good choice . The salads were very tasty and the pizza hot and fresh, there was always a daily dish and sandwiches made to order. They did not have soup one day but the next day it had been made specially for us !! Dinner was a themed buffet and was always beautifully presented and the staff in various uniforms to match the theme and the restaurant decorated accordingly . Sometimes the buffet choice was a little limited but we always found something we enjoyed.

Staff- Service and customer care at this hotel is without exception first rate from the cleaners and gardeners upwards. Special mention must go to Stephanie on reception who was our first point of contact and who was usually somewhere round the hotel most days- she was warm ,welcoming ,friendly and very efficient. Ajeev the restaurant manager who was superb - very efficient and always made every guest feel special . He would always go the extra mile to ensure you had enjoyed the dining experience. It was both our friends birthdays while we were here and as well as a special decorated table for dinner they both were presented with a lovely birthday cake and the. Staff sung Happy Birthday to them - it was a lovely gesture !! Nisha from the restaurant was a lovely girl - she loved to have a laugh and joke with you but was also very efficient and was always aware of guest needs around her. The bar staff were first class and always pleasant and efficient and always ready for a chat or joke !!! Melvyn and Jim were great - friendly , happy and smiling and efficient with your drinks orders. Clive and his entertainment team were great - they put in a huge effort to keep you happy !!!! We loved the Aqua Gym thanks guys !!! The manager Jennifer is very hands on and is very approachable and talks to all guests to ensure they are enjoying their holiday.

All in all we had a very enjoyable holiday - big thanks to all staff who ensured we did . Would not hesitate to recommend this hotel - great value for money , great hotel .

Thanks again Jane & Keith
