“Much better experience”
Reviewed 31 May 2013

I decided to book through Kingz Plaza again as they were the only agency who were not ridiculously priced for Canadian/American tourists. Most property management companies charge European prices which is unaffordable for your average North American. This time, we did not stay on Kingz Plaza, but rather a house in Ngaparou just outside of Saly. The house was modern for Senegal and very clean. The bedrooms were large and spacious and the place was well furnished. The garden staff were very nice and the cleaning lady was excellent. The property management were very professional and periodically called to make sure we were enjoying our stay. We were provided with a wifi system so that we could use Wifi inside the house. Our private pool was kept clean. I would definitely rent again. I should warn though that having private pool is a double edged sword. Our electro bill was about 300 dollars and we barely used our A/C or electrical appliances so I am assuming it is the pool that drove our bill up so high. I would have the pool boy turn off the filter or pump at night.

My husband and I came here and rented a villa for a month. The price worked out to be about $700-800 dollars Canadian, which is actually a lot for Senegal. When we first inquired, we were told that we would have internet and satellite television and a complimentary house cleaning once a week. We were also told that the utilities were included but if you exceeded their limit, you would pay extra.
My husband who was in Senegal prior to my arrival and is Senegalese, went to check out the place before I came to make sure it was okay. He was shown a small, but new/modern apartment which seemed to suit our needs. It also had a private swimming pool which we were later told didn't exist. Two days before my arrival, the manager called and said the apartment was not ready, as it needed some finishing touches. The manager assured my husband that he had something else for us and told us not to worry.
The day we arrived, we were shown a large detached villa with 2 bedrooms. It was old and had not been cleaned very well- (at least not to Canadian standards). The property manager also failed to mention that there was no cable on the tv and that the internet connection was not available in that particular unit. When we complained about not having internet, he said we were not paying for it anyways because it was "free". If it were really free then any joe off the street could use it. Having to go to an outdoor pool to use internet and be eaten by mosquitos was ridiculous. Also, having no cable on our tv made our evenings boring. We were then told that we would have to pay out of pocket for the cleaning lady 5000 CFA per cleaning. When we argued that we were previously told it was free, we managed to get one cleaning per week. We then asked the manager to move us to a different unit but he never got back to us even to say that there was nothing else available. We also found out that we were to pay all the utilities on our own, which ended up being around $200.00. The pool is not open after 7 pm which is a huge inconvenience. My husband and I were yelled and sworn at by a security gaurd for being in the pool after 7 pm. The management are snakey and did not reveal all the information to us before we came. It seems as though their stories/fees changed once we got there and the man blamed it on my husband's English, which is actually very proficient.

Room Tip: Make sure you specify that you want a unit with internet IN the house and cable IN the house.

mrkingz, Manager at Kingz Plaza, responded to this review, 29 October 2012
First and foremost, this review should not be listed here because the individual did not rent or stay at a Kingz Plaza Hotel and Microstel. This page is for guests who rented and stayed at Kingz Plaza Microstel, which is a boutique hostel with dorms, rooms, studios and villas, priced and maintained on daily basis. We do not offer monthly rate under this accommodation.

However, we have made investigations and found out that this individual rented a two bedroom furnished villa for one month, through the Real Estate Agency. The price was 350 000 f CFA per month (an equivalent of 533.572 EUR or 691.926 USD or 689.759 CAD). Now, it is surprising that this individual is being dishonest about the price of renting the villa which she claims to be about $700-800 dollars Canadian. Not true!

Utilities: When you stay in a house and consume electricity and water, you pay for those. Same applies in Canada, Senegal or other parts of the world. It is not a Hotel accommodation and those were not included in the price. There were three air conditioners in that villa, microwave, electric water heater, wash machine, TV, Fan etc. It is not possible to determine how much you will consume; some people could turn on all electrical appliances even when they don’t need them. While some can save their money by turning on only what they need when they need it. Your husband was well informed prior to the reservation and you were again well informed before you checked in. Yes you were informed that you will pay electricity and water charges when you are checking out. When you arrived, you inspected the villa and said it was ok, you liked it. Together with the Front Desk manager you took the meter readings on arrival, on the day of check out, the meter readings was again taking and you paid just what you consumed.

The real estate agency showed your husband different accommodations including one bedroom apartment which was to be ready around the 15th of September 2012. Since you will be arriving on the 21st of September your husband chose that apartment, and it has a common pool not a private pool as you claimed. September 15th was a Saturday, when the office realised that the landlord did not finish the apartment on the 15th, the next office day which was 17th September, they contacted your husband and informed him about the situation and requested he come over and make a new selection. He said he was not available and agreed with the frontdesk manager to select another accommodation on his behalf. September 17th to September 21st is not two days as you claimed - (at least not to Canadian standards). This is another open lie from you. Don’t know if you are simply confused or being dishonest on purpose. Either way, your review is false.

The day you arrived, we were shown a large detached villa with 2 bedrooms. You inspected it with your husband and said it was ok.

You were accommodated in a tourist resort with several Wi-Fi hotspots which you were given the free access password. You said you want to access the network and download movies while in bed. Unfortunately, the hotspot, even though seen in your villa, was not strong for that purpose during your stay. But other residents with similar situations simply stepped out into the gardens or pool sides and used the Wi-Fi without thinking it ridiculous.

There are big warning signs on each of the swimming pools in the residence; the pool is closed at 7 pm daily. This enables the daily cleaning and maintenance of these outdoor common pools. It is both for hygienic and security reasons. But when the security found you swimming with two guys in the night, instead of getting out of the pool, you told him you paid for it. That was ridiculous - (at least to Canadian standards).

Summary: This is a dishonest review and should be removed.

Booked in from Kingzplaza Dakar and we were not disappointed. Two hours from Dakar but more tranquil and relaxing.

Everything you need is here...beach, pools (yes there are two the second is with a diving board), restaurant, beautiful gardens on site and shops, banks, hairdressers, supermarkets, restaurants all just outside the complex. Bank ATM's take Visa and Mastercard (including Maestro, Cirrus etc).

There are good attractions nearby, Accroboab and Bandia Reserve. There are also water sports, quad biking etc bookable in Saly.

The locals are friendly and funloving. Staff are helpful and nothing is too much trouble.

A good jumping off place for those wishing to pop over to the Gambia for a few days...a four-five hour drive to the border and then a couple of hours to Banjul which is easy to do.

We are planning to return again.
