Like the previous reviewer, we felt that some teething problems still exist but hey... these are easily fixed details in what is an amazing location and resort.
What we loved:
the location, gardens and beach. Very well maintained, spotlessly clean and beautiful mature gardens. The beach was lovely - except for low-tide we found enough rock and coral-free space for nice safe swimming. kayaking and snorkelling are worth a try. The rooms were faultless (we had a beach view double). The 50m pool was superb (if a little too warm !). The staff were very friendly, helpful and efficient - a credit to the hotel management. The gym was well equipped. Nice touch was the room fridge stocked with free soft drinks (chargeable to restock), and we were welcomed with a heart cake and sparkling wine and flowers.
Tips for the hotel:
the buffet was variable quality. We expected a wider range of local fresh fruit and juices at breakfast, but found at least half was tinned, or simply not ripe enough to eat. The evening buffet was very good, although we were surprised to be served an instant coffee after our meal (and expensive too). As per Seychelles, even locally bottled still water we found very expensive. The evening entertainment we found to be 'cheesy' and too much 'background' music. For us, a more lively entertainment programme, for example a 'Sega' night or Latin music, would have been made a much more sociable and engaging atmosphere in the bar after dinner. I agree with previous reviewer on the sunbeds being reserved and then not used. The hotel should monitor and manage this.
We were stopped from walking down the whole beach by a security guard who said that part was private. No signs, but made very clear...This is illegal as all beaches in Seychelles below high tide mark are public. It is a shocking but sad fact that many large hotels are bending the law on this to restrict access. I would encourage others to complain to the hotel if this happens. Small point in the room, there was no mirror within plug distance for the supplied hairdryer.
Tips for travellers:
take a beach mat and don't rely on sunbeds. They are available but the sand is so soft...
and you can get more privacy with a little more effort. If you fly with Emirates via Dubai, the new A380 is amazing.. and the entertainment system the best. Dubai duty-free is the best in the world. If the hotel is full, then at breakfast sometimes the Indochine restaurant is set out for the buffet breakfast. We found this to be quieter and calmer. We loved the fact that breakfast is served until 11am. There are two excellent tennis courts with lighting. We took our own rackets and balls. If you like jogging and prefer outdoors, there is a track over towards the Four Seasons hotel, but a stiff climb. You can do a good 2-3 mile circuit but check the map first. Water bottles can be filled up in the gym from a cooler. There are some giant tortoises hidden away (not sure why) but if you have kids you can probably ask to see them. Horses too but not clear if riding available or not. If you want to see a beach sunset, my top tip is to visit the Anse Soleil beach about 2 miles away. There is a small cafe/bar there but we had an amazing sun-downer there (took our own wine).
Although I have some small criticisms, i want to say this was still probably the best tropical beach holiday ever for us. The location and grounds are simply stunning. Kempinski have made a good investment, and I am sure they will continue to improve to be one the best destinations in the Seychelles. The difference between 4 and 5 stars for us was the food quality/consistency and the evening entertainment.
