We lived in Lesotho and went to Moolmanshoek 5 or 6 times. This place has all one can ask. Incredible views, the best horses in SA, amazing hiking, very good food, and wonderful management and staff. Mafie and Wiesmann are always so nice and welcoming. Moolmanshoek is simply the thing we'll miss the most about Lesotho :)

Room Tip: Room 13 is good for family, but 8 and 4 were our favorite.

What a surprise - gem of a place. It offers a great deal: game viewing, walking, hiking, riding, chilling....the list is endless. The rooms are good and the food excellent. Met some lovely people too! I would certainly go back.

Stayed here for a business conference. The lodge is located deep in the valley approx 2km down a dirt track off the main road. The reception building & restaurant is separated away from the lodge bedrooms providing a more secluded & quiet surroundings for the rooms. I was given room 15 which is a family room with a private terrace looking out to the scenic reserve where horses are grazing close by. The room is large and well equipped with coffee & tea making facilities plus a minibar fridge. There is a large comfortable bed on the ground floor also 2 x single beds on the 2nd floor should you be in a group. The bathroom is also a good size with 2 x wash basins, a large corner bath plus a fantastic overhead shower.

Facilities at the reserve are second to none. We had a game drive exploring the areas of the reserve wildlife in a land rover vehicle. Also a horse riding safari wherein we got up closer to the many wildlife such as Zebra, Springbok, Oryx, Ostrich etc.

In the evenings we used the restaurant and enjoyed local produce cooked to perfection by the excellent chefs. All washed down with a South African Savignon blanc.

All in all this was an excellent place to meet, work, unwind, reflect & enjoy.

Room Tip: Rooms 14 & 15 are in a separate building looking out over the reserve from a private & remot...

Moolmanshoek has been on our bucket list for years but we have only just managed to tick it off our list. It more than lived up to our expectations and we left very glad that we had finally been there. After a very warm welcome we were taken to our room ( in a lodge separate from the main building) which took our breath away. It was large, bright and airy with many personal touches. French doors led out onto our own private verandah with incredible views of the mountains. When the rain started, we moved into the enclosed sun room which forms part of the public area upstairs. There was also an honesty bar with comfortable chairs and a library full of interesting historical books as well as other reading matter. As there were only one other couple staying in the lodge, we felt like Lord and Lady of the Manor! The entrance hall of the lodge has a bucket full of umbrellas which we made use of walking up to supper as well as a decanter of sherry and glasses, which was most welcoming as we arrived in unseasonably cold weather. We managed to fit in a quick walk around the farm, with beautiful vistas in every direction. Supper was served with a smile and was delicious. Breakfast the next morning was a good old fashioned farm breakfast and we both wished we had been more hungry as there was so much on offer. Although the weather let us down, we did manage to get a good idea of what this place is all about and it was enough to make us want to return for longer, with our bikes.

Room Tip: We stayed in Nel room which was out of this world. We did manage to peek into the other rooms and th...

I stayed for a weeks riding with a friend, booked through 'In The Saddle'. This is a fabulous place; the lodge, the rooms, the food, the service are all fabulous. The horses are amazing, you will not be disappointed. Whatever your riding ability, they have a horse that you will feel totally confident and happy on. And the riding territory is lovely, exploring the valleys and peaks in the mountain range surrounding the homestead and further afield, more than plenty to be riding new ground each day and enjoying stunning views. The riding can also be tailored to be as fast as you want. They specialise in producing endurance horses, so if you want to go fast, you can go fast for a very long time. Most memorable was the 12km canter to the cafe in town for breakfast and equally fun was galloping around the plains, but the technical riding was eye-opening, I didn't know that horses were capable of rock climbing, mud skiing or general mountain goating with a rider on board!

I really don't have a bad word to say about this place.
I went with a group of people as part of a fundraising challenge.
We could not have had a better time- everything was stunning from the setting, the rooms, the hospitality, the food, the friendliness, the horses, the challenging riding, the scenery.... I just loved this place and would return in a heartbeat.
A real home from home....

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Moolmanshoek is situated in the Witteberg mountain range, between Ficksburg and Rosendal, Eastern Free State, South Africa. Do you long to escape for a while from the city noise and stress? Are you seeking rest for your soul, a peaceful environment, or that ideal setting for your wedding, for team building or a conference? The reserve was declared a Natural Heritage Site (No 199) in 1994, mainly because of the rare Mountain Bamboo that grows in the valley. Come and share this piece of Paradise with us for a few days. Take a leisurely stroll across the valley floor, go on a relaxing game drive or explore the reserve on horseback or by horse cart. Our SA Boerperd and Endurance Arab horses are born and bred in the valley, where more than 300 horses make Moolmanshoek their home. It is our hope that the uniqueness and splendour of our surroundings will be as inspiring to you as it has always been to us. We believe that Moolmanshoek is:A feast for the eyes, rest for your soul and firewood for the times ahead! It is our privilege to be stewards of more than 3 300 hectares of the breathtaking Moolmanshoek valley. The Witteberg Mountains surround the valley in the shape of a horseshoe (with Visierskerf peaking at 2407m above sea level) feeding several mountain streams in the valley floor below. This basin is home to a variety of game that include Springbuck, Black Wildebeest, Blesbuck, Zebra, Eland, Gemsbok and many others that are historically indigenous to the area. More than 230 bird species can be seen in the reserve, while a wide variety of plants grow on the mountain slopes and in the beautiful wooded ravines.Under the skilled hands and vision of the owner, Willie Nel, the once productive farm was transformed and developed into a game reserve and conservation area. It was later declared a private nature reserve. You are invited to visit us and revel in the breathtaking natural beauty and tranquillity; the rich variety of wildlife, flora and birdlife in an unspoiled mountain environment. Explore the reserve on horseback, go walking alongside streams and dams, or enjoy fly-fishing in clear spring water. Follow one of our three hiking trails or various day walks and renew your mind and soul. Challenge yourself with abseiling, a 4X4 drive or climbing one of the peaks. ... more   less
