I dropped in for lunch when my original destination, Living Life, was closed as it was Sunday. The staff was lovely, the beer was cold, the pizza a bit greasy but the veggies and herbs were fresh and the taste was excellent. The gardens were a great reprieve. I certainly will return for an evening meal.

This is not a bad place to stay. Rooms are comfortable.....nothing to rave about. The guesthouse is slightly outside the centra of the town and location is quite good. A bonus is that it has a coffee shop, bat and restaurant. Restaurant is fine with a relatively simple range of things like steaks and pizzas etc. my only real complaint was that there is dry walling between rooms and the people next dot could be heard arguing and farting. The breakfast was about average for such an establishment.

The dinner served, was the best steak I have had in SA, a very nice meal. Very friendly and caring staff both at dinner and breadfast. The room was a bit cold (heater not working properly and light entered the room early though a plexiglass skylight which was quite dirty). It took changing 3 different rooms at 9pm to get one that was functioning properly. Stay was nice once we got settled in but not enough heating for the room. Bed was ok. Staff however was good and kept trying to accomodate inspite of their problems with various rooms.

We planned to stay here for a week...and ended up staying for nearly 4 months! Cranberry Cottage became our "home away from home." Our room was actually a small apartment with a beautiful kitchen, well styled living and bedroom and an enormous bathroom with a whirlpool tub! The grounds are unbelievable...it's like you're living in a botanical garden! You never feel as if you're staying at a hotel - it's more like your own little. There is a coffee shop, a bar, restaurant, spa and much more. VERY BEST of all are the people - the front desk staff (Sheri-Lee, CS and Johanne) and grounds crew (Simon), the cleaning team (Anneke), and all of the staff in the spa are kind, accomodating, helpful, happy and simply delightful to be around. They are your "family" when you stay there.

Thanks Cranberry for an amazing experience!

Endless appreciation,
Ian & Elizabeth Alderson

Absolutely lovely grounds and very friendly staff. Very safe, guarded premises at the edge of a small, quaint town - made us wonder if over-zealous protection was truly necessary. Rooms were situated far apart with quite a walking distance and somewhat scary route to the dining room. Paths are poorly lit. Our friend seemed to have decent rooms, but ours was in the very private older section, but the small wall heater barely worked because it was next to a poorly fitted, leaky patio door. The room was consistently freezing, and when the heater occasionally kicked on, it was disturbingly loud. The small double bed was lumpy, and the tiny room had little space to open our luggage. We had to watch our step to move around each other. The bathroom was nice with a jacuzzi tub that didn't work, and a rust covered tin roof, plus a small window opening onto nothing.. Even the good, hot shower was a disappointment because once done, you stepped out into the pervasive chill. We requested a room change, but all they did was give us a portable gas heater that we used with trepidation.

For this Cottage's price, we felt we were cheated. The breakfast is a la carte, abundant, and very good. The dinners the group had arranged were, fresh, plentiful, and well-prepared -especially the excellent beef fillets that are almost fresh off the hoof. South African free-ranging, grass-fed beef is not to be missed.

Check out your room before you settle in. The honeymoon suite is quite good with a fireplace, but even so, the portable heater needs to be on all night.

Room Tip: Try the honeymoon suite, but be very cautious because the steps up to the room are steep winding iro...

Hi

I only listed as owner recently. I sincerely appologise for your discomfort.
I'm not 100% sure you've got the right Guest house, but would like to comment on the following:

We've never had " small wall heaters" . All our rooms are fitted with 12000 btu airconditioners, Which are serviced by an outside company twice a year.

We dont have double beds in our rooms. If there is only one bed in the room, its a queen or king bed.

All our rooms got one or other ceiling installed. There is not one room where the opinion can be " rust cover tin roof ".

We've got a 5 member maintenance team that follow an pro-active maintenance plan on our properties. We appologise yet again for your experience. Be assured of our best service possible.

Regards
Norman

The grounds of the compound are special, cool and inviting with flowers and ducks and lovely pools to sit by. Somehow we lucked out and got the honeymooner's room, upstairs with a balcony, quite spacious and nicely decorated. We also had a comfortable couch and fireplace which we used, as it was cool at night (no heat). Stairs up to the room were a bit of a challenge and morning noise of dogs and chickens a bit annoying. Meals were tasty but very SLOW to arrive to the table. Servers were friendly and staff generally very nice. Unfortunately couldn't explore the little town of Ladybrand which looked charming but was deemed unsafe for us.

Room Tip: Upstairs, although more difficult to drag luggage up, gave a nice view of flowering trees and birds.

Although most guests are short term, my husband and I have been staying here at Cranberry Cottage since the end of May (it's now mid-June). I would have to say that the physical place and its staff are all excellent! Check Cranberry Cottage home page for photos, but they have lovely gardens with duck and koi ponds sprinkled here and there. We're here in off season, and are here as longer-term guests (husband is working in Lesotho, about 20km away) and have been treated like friends from day one. With the room comes a complementary breakfast, always large and delicious. Also, the pub/restaurant attacted to the main building serves delicious and wonderfully served food. There is Internet access for purchase-most of the time reliable, but not always. CC is also within two or three blocks to the small downtown area, so you can purchasse food or drinks or whatever. Secure-feeling, surrounded by gated areas which may or may not be necessary, but is the style here. Really, this is a great place!
