We booked at this hotel at the last minute after driving through the Midlands Meander and realizing we needed an extra day. Very pleasant staff and beautiful scenery. Was a bit disappointed at how outdated the decor was and would have preferred at least more modern bathroom facilities. Poor roads in the area unfortunately contribute to the lack of upgrades and the lack of visitors. Such a charming place, i do hope that they are able to upgrade in the near future.

During December 2013 I stayed at the Little Switzerland Hotel and Chalets in the Drakensberg mountains. It is about a 3 hour drive from Durban and the roads are in good condition with the exception of the last 10 kilometers before the resort where the road surface is damaged and has not been maintained in a long time so cautious driving is advised in the area. The entrance of the hotel is impressive with its small convenience shop, The Coyote Restaurant and petrol station. The small shop proved very helpful because we selected the chalet option which only offers the self catering. The staff at the reception was very helpful and checked us in on time. The chalets are located on a very beautiful part of the resort. The patio and upstairs balcony face a panoramic view of the mountains which is breathtaking and unobstructed for photographs. The parking lot and swimming pool area faces a splendid view of the mountains and forests. The swimming pool is situated very close to the chalets. The gardens are kept in an immaculate condition. The chalets are also kept very clean by the staff that comes in every day. A checklist of the inventory of items in the chalet was handed to me on arrival which a staff member rechecked on my departure. An amount of R20 was charged for a broken glass. There is also a small stockroom with packs of firewood which can be used and will be charged to the account. My immediate reaction to the fireplace and firewood was that there is something I am not going to use in the middle of summer in South Africa. I was totally wrong because the sunshine only lasts for half the day. Towards the afternoon the heat is soon replaced by a sudden violent storm with rain, hail and cold. It gets extremely cold at night so one of my indoor activities was keeping the fire alight. The nature trails and walks into the forest or mountains was refreshing with the cool mountain air. The freshness of the air and views of the natural setting compensates for the unpredictable weather.

The hotel offer s many sporting activities such as tennis, cycling, quad biking, horse riding, volleyball and golf. There is also set activities for the kids. I found an activity which was not planned for in my holiday. I read about it in a pamphlet at the reception. It was a visit to the Eskom Hydro-Electric Power station. It is about 10 kilometers from the hotel. A booking must be made to visit this venue which is free to the public. I returned the following day where we were given a small lecture at the visitors center. After taking the helmets we drove a short distance to the pump station. A lift takes people 200 meters or 52 storeys underground and into gigantic tunnels with roads, extremely loud machinery and computers. They don’t take you all the way down. Water is dropped from the upper dam to a lower dam through a large pipe which spins a turbine that generates electricity. It was an amazing experience, for on the surface there is peace and quietness with nature and below the surface, a James Bond type world is unraveling. I could only imagine what else was hidden underground.

A short drive up the road from the hotel is where the upper dam is located. The Little Switzerland Hotel is a fantastic place where nature is at its best. It is a wonderful place to visit when the weather is good.

We stayed at this hotel ten years ago and was remembered as a pristine hotel. On our arrival we were shocked at the condition of the hotel, the grounds, the facilities and the units. The entire property is run down and general maintenance is lacking. This hotel is situated in such a prime position and the views are unbelievable we just wish that this hotel will have a turnaround. Hopefully things will start looking up in the coming future.

We rented a 6 sleeper, self-catering chalet overlooking the amphitheatre in the Northern Drakensberg. The chalet was well fitted out, especially for the colder weather, very clean and, a bonus for self-catering units, it was serviced daily at no additional cost. The views from the chalet are spectacular. The hotel grounds are extensive and there are many walks and other activities on offer. The climbs up the various peaks surrounding the hotel offer an even broader view of the spectacular mountain range. Although the hotel does not have a restaurant, there is an excellent bistro, Coyote Cafe, at its entrance which serves excellent food at reasonable prices. The staff were efficient and pleasant on check-in, but management could be more accommodating on pricing and extensions to stays during the off-season, especially since there appeared to be many units unoccupied. The tranquility of the hotel and the surroundings makes It a place we could return to.

Room Tip: Chalets overlooking the amphitheatre offer a better view of teh mountains.

Booked a time share unit. Staff was friendly but that's about all. The units were poorly maintained and furniture is extremely out dated! One of the bathroom's basins was cracked. Main bedrooms' duvet cover was stained. Seating in the lounge was extremely uncomfortable! Unit also smelled of stale tobacco smoke. These units are in a desperate need of an upgrade. The location is outstanding and it's such a pity that the place is not up to standard. The main hotel has been closed so no real restaurant for alternative meals. A word of warning, the road to the hotel (we traveled from Jhb) is shocking - travel in a 4x4!

Stunning view of the Drakensberg mountains, at very silent location. During the night you only hear the animals around your lodge (Not sure if its the same in high season)
Bit old fashioned furniture, but no complaints at this price. Never had such a big and comfortable bed, minimum 2.40 by 2.20m, almost could not find back my wife in the morning!;o). Staff were not extremely friendly, except the barman Webster, he was a nice guy.

Room Tip: Take the self catering lodges (best with mountain view), not the hotel room. Much cheaper, and more...

I trully loverly hotel, Makes you feel like your are really in Switzerland. The food is good and the rooms are clean and pleasant. The view is really wonderful as you look on to the mountains. The only problem is the government road up to the hotel. Its full of potholes and a normal car strugles but its not imposible to get there just really unpleasant and slow.
