“Beyond Expectations”
Reviewed 12 May 2014

My wife and I are a young, recently married couple who are into our mountain biking and love the 'great outdoors'.

We initially chose Top Lodge because it was close to All Out Adventures and to be honest because it was really well priced. We were not expecting much, we just wanted a cheap weekend away in the berg where we could get on our mountain bikes.

What we found at Top Lodge completely blew us away and exceeded all our expectations.
Fantastic views, superbly clean, cozy indoor fireplace, spatious, romatically secluded. Wonderful. To add, the owner Gavin is a gracious host, knowledgable of the surrounding area and history and went out of his way to help us in anyway he could.

Top Lodge must be the best kept secret in the berg and a part of me didnt want to write this review, so that we could keep it our little hidden gem. We will be back !

Room Tip: Make sure you take Gavins advise and have a picnic on a blanket at sunset on the lawns in front of y...

Lots to do in the area including fantastic horse riding and also the perfect place if you want to do nothing! The best equipped self catering accommodation I have ever stayed in..... Attention to detail is fantastic! Travelled in a 4x4 and road was no issue but rather get collected by Gavin if aren't in one.

The views and tranquilly can't be beaten! We spent happy hours swimming and tubing on the dam too.

This was my second time at Top Lodge and once again I wasn't disappointed - this is literally a piece of heaven in the Drakensburg. Below is a quick run-down of my two experiences there:

Stay 1 (June 2013): Couples romantic getaway
I and my partner went up to Top Lodge for 2 nights. It rained and snowed for much of the time we were there, but we had a simply fantastic time. The cabins are well thought out, there is everything you need, a lot of space and a lovely fireplace to curl up in the evenings with a bottle of wine and some food straight off the braai. When we did get out we went to the Royal Natal National park and did a couple of their walks/hikes. This is well worth your while - the amphetheatre is the most iconic sight in all of the Drakensburg!

Stay 2 (February 2014): Best friends weekend away
This time I took my best friend (who was visiting from the States/USA) to Top Lodge. We had a great time. Every chalet is private so we caught up, went fishing (caught 4 bass and 1 blue gill on a fly rod in only half an hour!) and visited The Royal Natal National Park and Rugged Glen (Rugged Glen is worth driving through, but not much else - Royal Natal is the real star here!).

Other key aspects:
Road up to Top Lodge: I drive a Landrover Defender 90 (shortwheelbase) and absolutely loved the road up to Top Lodge. It can be a little challenging but most 4x4s can make it up with some patience. Gavin (the owner) is the most accomodating and lovely chap I've come across in any place I've stayed accross South Africa. If you don't have a 4x4 he's happy yo pick you up from the Alpine Heath resort at the bottom of the track up to Top Lodge. I feel the road up (only 4-5km) is something really special that keeps Top Lodge a place for those looking for a lovely, private, comfortable and special experience in the Drakensburg

Accomodation: incredible value for money. Gavin hand built this place, making sure there are all the comforts one needs for a lovely long weekend away. There is no tv etc, which is part of the charm and exactly catered to those who appreciate being in this part of the Drakensburg.

Fishing: great - particularly in the summer months. There are bass and bluegill at Top Lodge and trout at Royal Natal Nat. Park

Views: The views from Top Lodge are most spectacular early in the morning (5-6am) when you can see everything - including the mighty Amphetheatre.

If you are lucky enough to be in this lovely part of the world, Top Lodge is the place to stay. I will definitely stay there anytime I plan a trip to the Northern Drakensburg in the future!

I really enjoyed being away from the crowds and traffic. This is my kind of place. The cottages are perfect for a small family and they have everything you should need. Take your fishing rods and lures for the bass. The kids (and adults) will love the swing, swimming in the dam and taking the different trails which are not too extreme. The views are awesome and the stars shine bright when the clouds are gone. Gavin is a great host and will do his best to accommodate you. We will definitely be back soon.

We experienced a wonderful long weekend at the lodge. Kids kept themselves busy whole weekend on swing and swimming in dam. We hiked, braaied, star gazed and just plain relaxed in the peaceful environment. Accommodation is clean and well equipped. The hosts are inviting and most helpful. Gave us stax of info about the area and advice on where and what to do in the Berg. Views are amazing so photo opportunities are abundant. We recommend this lodge for all ages, singles or families. Will definitely be visiting Toplodge again!

This lodge is not for everyone! If you like trampolines, quad bikes and busy places you had better book elsewhere. But if you do like a remote, quiet and peaceful location with just the views to keep you busy - then book here immediately! Oh and of course the most stunning hikes starting from your front door. Gavin has about 4 well marked trails from 45 min to 3 or 4 hours that will pass your time while not staring at the scenery, reading or sleeping. You must do the red trail which is well marked and will take you high up into the mountain with the most stunning views of the Drakensberg and the Amphitheatre. The units are very spacious, clean and well maintained and we would rate the self catering thatched chalets the best place we have stayed in in the Drakesnberg.

Room Tip: The 3 chalets are all stunning - perhaps book the honeymoon if you have an option though.
