“A blissful weekend”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 11 March 2014

My partner and I had the pleasure of spending the weekend at the Cavern Resort and we absolutely enjoyed ourselves. From the moment you enter the premises, you are greeted with friendly smiles and wonderful service. We were assisted by Alex, telephonically, initially and when we arrived, Alex was very welcoming and friendly. Although its a family resort, we were put into a room away from the kids which was wonderful. Our room was clean and neat, the staff were friendly and efficient.

We felt so relaxed and at home at the Resort. The food was really great, so well done to the chef. We did a hike and must say that its really a neat idea that the resort packs a lunch for the hike. The view is breathtakingly beautiful. There is also plenty to do during the day.

If you are looking for a place in the Berg that is value for money, be it a couples getaway or family weekend, the Cavern is definitely your option.

Room Tip: Couples stay at the Gate house rooms, away from the kids.

I am an avid Mountain Biker. My wife loves relaxing. We both love our comfort and food. Through All Out Adventures nearby there hundreds of kilometres of beautiful MTB trails. The SPA is apparently (my wife used it a couple of times) well run and reasonable. The food was outstanding and the staff were efficient and friendly.

It has been nine years since we visited the Cavern and we were not disappointed by our 3 day Valentine -offer stay. The food, the superior room accommodation, the scenery , the pool were just as good as we remembered and the complementary foot massage in the 'new to us' spa was extremely relaxing. All the staff were professional and pleasant. We hope to return in the not to distant future!

Room Tip: The superior suite is beautiful but the superior rooms are good too. Both are a short walk(uphill...

The Cavern's slogan (coined by guests many years back) remains as true today as when I first visited the resort in the 1970s with my parents. Since then, I've been back numerous times, first as a teenager, then as a young adult, and now as a parent of two primary school boys. As full-board family-run hotel, there aren't many place like it left in South Africa. The full is superb (although vegetarians should be warned that South Africans by and large are meat-eaters and the Cavern is no exception - they will need prior notice to accommodate you). The Cavern continues traditions such as guided morning walks (of varying lengths), evening entertainment and dances. Travellers especially from overseas might find the rooms a little spartan - there are (deliberately) no TVs in the standard rooms, and internet access is very limited - but the idea is not to spend the holiday in the room, but rather in the mountains (or in the dining room!)

My family has been visiting The Cavern for at least 25 years and though our general holiday policy is never to go to the same place twice, The Cavern draws us back time and time again. It really is the place of 'many happy returns'. Once the hubbub of rat-race life is behind you, your unpacking is done and your car is safely parked out of sight, you will begin to feel the stresses and strains of everyday life melting away. This family run hotel offers the perfect holiday for anyone aged between 1 and 100. The Drakensberg is breath-taking with its sparkling waterfalls and clear mountain streams while the well kept gardens are abundant with bird life. The rooms are regularly refurbished and upgraded and are perfectly comfortable. TV lovers may prefer the luxury rooms, but quite honestly, watching TV in your room should be the last of your priorities. However, for real TV addicts there are several places, including the Cave Bar, where you can watch till your heart's content. Activities range from short to long scenic walks which culminate in tea, made with water boiled on an open fire, served with The Cavern's famous crunchies. For those who prefer not to walk, swimming, fishing, rowing, tennis, bowls, croquet, darts, table tennis, pool, bridge, board games, movie club, and horse riding are just some of the things you can do. After dinner, fun-filled family entertainment is provided in the games room and on Saturday evenings there is generally a disco/dance/barn dance which again, suits all age groups. For those who need retail therapy, there is a delightful little shop adjacent to reception where you will find all manner of unusual treasures. And, if after all these activities you are still looking for some me-time, you can be pampered in the quietude of the relaxing Forest Spa. As for the food... you won't find better quality, quantity or excellence of presentation anywhere. In addition, The Cavern is a children's paradise. We hardly saw our grand-daughter who absolutely loved the children's dining room and all of its concomitant activities The friendliness and helpfulness of the staff is an absolute pleasure when compared with the oftentimes disinterested attitudes of those we encounter at home. In fact, some of the staff have been at The Cavern for more than 30 years which speaks volumes for the rapport between the owners and their staff. For special events such as Easter, Christmas and New Year, the Bedingham and Carte families go that extra mile to ensure that every guest has a great time and goes away with many happy memories, and a desire to make 'many happy returns'. Enjoy!

We have been visiting The Cavern for more than 20 years, first as a young couple, then as new parents, when the kiddies dining room was a god-send, and now as slightly more mature parents of teenagers. The Cavern has grown with us, the food is superb, the rooms modern and comfortable, the nightly activities such as Beetle Drive and Tens still in place (do miss the Country Dancing though), and of course the star of the show is the setting, the mountains, so beautiful no matter what time of the year. Fully recommended
