Kirurumu Ngorongoro Camp
Reviewed 4 March 2014 via mobile

We stayed 2 nights, booked directly through website.

Bed was the most comfortable along our 8-day safari, and we had a very warm double duvet - essential when you wake up to a temperature of just above +5C. Shower was good and hot, although manual, i.e. you order shower for a specific time, but this is common at all tented camps.

Good lunch boxes - best we had at any of 4 camps we stayed in.

The camp is at the Nyati campsite, a bush just outside the crater rim, 20 mins drive from the entrance. The campsite is wild - we had buffalos and elephants on the territory both nights! It was amazing to listen and to watch through the zipped tent's net how they were grazing just a few meters from the tent. The camp's staff are cautious and protecting the guests. One of the guys, Mimosa, was trying very hard to make our stay comfortable.

We also drove to see the Empakai Crater - what a great view! And very quiet, no tourists, just a handful of Masai. It's just about 2h drive from Ngorongoro.

We enjoyed staying at Kirurumu very much!

The camp is situated a the Ngorongoro crater rim and is quite small. Only ten tents and a small camp fire area in the middle. The staff was super, service and food great and the tents had all the amenities you need. We even had two huge water buffalos in the camp at night! Exciting and a bit scary at the same time. Please note that the camp site lies at almost 2200m above sea level and it gets rather cold at night. We experienced around 0 degrees Celcius and rally appreciated the warm sweaters.

A great mobile tented camp within driving distance from the crater entrance (seems further in than it was going out!). The forest area it was situated in was very different from the other areas around the crater that we had seen and with a small number of tents made it quiet and relaxing.

We had the good fortune of staying at Kirurumu Ngorongoro Camp during our 7-day safari. It was our favorite tented camp! The setting was serene and beautiful, in the middle of a lush forest. The tents were decorated beautifully and were extremely comfortable. We especially appreciated the hot water bottles waiting for us in our beds at bedtime. The staff was kind, friendly, and accommodating. We were tired upon arrival and were leaving the next morning at 5:45 AM to go to the Ngorongoro Crater, so the staff prepared a 6:30 PM dinner for us and a 5:30 AM breakfast. We appreciated that our guide dined with us, as this is not standard at all tented camps. We wish we could have stayed longer.
The camp is located about 45 to 60 minutes from the descending road to the Ngorongoro crater (depending on the road conditions -- they get quite muddy and slippery after the rains -- and the number of Maasai herds crossing the road).
We would suggest adding signs to help guests find the camp as it is very well hidden and close to impossible to locate. Our guide had to stop several times to ask directions, and it was still impossible to know which trail to take at certain points.

We stayed at the Kirurumu Tented Camp in Ngorongoro during our 7-day safari and loved it. Luxury tents set in the bush, with beautifully appointed interiors. Loved the hot water bottles awaiting us in bed after a delicious and elegant camp dinner following drinks by the campfire! Simon, our host, and his attentive staff were most gracious. This tented camp changes location throughout the season. Should you have a chance to book a night at Kirurumu during your time in Ngorongoro, do so. It will be a highlight of your trip!
